Wait wait wait, I think I found the flaw in all of this. You guys are all from the States, right? So not only do you have fear of injury, but fear of millions of dollars in medical bills if you take a slapper to the teeth. I, being a proud socialist Canadian, can leech from the government in the event I take some rubber between the eyes. Masks and helmets be damned!  Now I can spend that extra money on beer, thus increasing my performance.

This is just a reminder that, for players and for goalies a like, a helmet does not make you invincible. I've received a concussion while wearing a concussion helmet. I got hit, my head snapped back onto the ice, I remember getting up taking a stride towards the bench, and then my next memory is of the trainer standing over me asking questions. Nothing can make hockey completely, 100% safe, there is risk of significant injury as soon as you step on the ice. Do not take this the wrong way PMA, I'm not saying any old helmet will do. I'm recommending that people, especially people that do not play goalie (ha, in the goalie thread!) get a good concussion helmet, rather than any helmet that the CSA/HECC has certified.

They never got tired; we were outshot 33-5 and the only goal they got was a close in shot that I got a piece of, rebound got stuffed five hole, and I grabbed the puck just as it crossed the line

I worked on my breakaway problem a little today and had some moderate success, but oh god HERE COMES THE FIVEHOLE. I think the Velos are just too big for my narrow bfly. I end up stacking pad on pad unless I actually remember to move my legs apart a little So I think for better or for worse, I'll be getting a new set fairly soon. On the bright side, my tax refund just came in so I am finally going to head up to Toronto to check out some pads. On the down side, everything here is so loving expensive, even with the strong dollar <  >

Alright kids.. I need some more imput. Got a chest protector (some 80 dollar alright thing), Mission pant/girdle combo, and a jersey. Not sure what you mean by elbow pads, unless you are just looking for extra protection. Your chest protector should have some kind of rudimentary elbow protection built in already. The 6k is a decent beginner's set I think. The resale value will be next to nil when you have to replace them, but as long as you're okay with that they'll work well. Only thing I've heard is durability issues. No comment on the mask, I know next to nothing about Vaughn masks. I'm betting they're a ghosting of some other brand but I can't tell which off the top of my head.

Yeah, my chest protector didn't come with elbow pads.. (70 bucks at a pro shop.. wasn't a bad deal). Anyone who wants/needs pads or gloves and doesn't mind them being old spec: Pure Hockey in Marlboro MA is blowing out some of their older stock that is 12" wide at ludicrous prices. I counted about 20 pairs of pads from 32" through 37", and about 30 gloves. There's a pair of Missions in my size that used to be about $750 that they are selling for $100 (I'm torn on whether to buy them and use them for tennis-court hockey), Epics are $300, Bionics are $250, and so forth. Really, the prices are insanely low. I am going to go up to their store in NH as well and see if they are doing similar things, and I'll probably go back to Marlboro later this week. I highly recommend you call them up and ask if they'd ship them to you, because a) I bet they would, and b) cheap new gear is supa-sweet. Barring that, if anyone really wants me to, I'll go back and look for something specifically in your size and we can work out some paypal system or something. Trick is that it has to be by next Saturday since I'm going back to school (just give me my loving masters already fuckers) after.

According to Mr. Battram and the measurements I took, I wear what amounts to a 34" Vaughn with a 1.5" thigh rise. I was skeptical, but now that I've worn them for some time, I'm convinced as well. What I'm saying is, try stuff on and see what's comfortable. Just use the mesurement as a guide and don't get hung up on it. EDIT: Visual evidence of size here.

Got my new pads last monday, Itech RX5s in 36+1, and had the first game in them Weds. Tied 4-4. The pads broke in really well, especially as I didn't get a chance to play in them until the game. Just wore them around the house a bit Tuesday to get used to the feel. Only downside to the game was about 5 minutes in, I twisted my left knee a bit when my foot got stuck on the post. Didn't hurt much until about 4 hours later, then it throbbed for a while. Feels decent now, but still tender if I press on the right side of it. Debating if I should get it looked at or not.

I'm kinda torn on a decision.. I am getting ready to order my leg pads, but dunno which size to pick. I went to my local pro shop the other day and tried on 32" and 34". I definatly liked 34" better.. but.. 36"?! I am 5'9" with my heel to knee being around 20"... anyone have a good reason to get a 36" pad compared to a 34" with someone who doesn't know a difference (aside from two inches..hurr hurr penis jokes)? Well, it's official. I'm a dirty brand switcher. I just came home from Duke's with a new set of 35" RBK 8Ks. I really wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I went over to Duke's and tried on a pair. At first I was all -- no this is completely wrong, these things are just falling off of me. Coming from Velocities the leg channel was strikingly bare. After the initial shock of not having any leg bracing though, I actually have to say that I began to like it. The rotation was super clean and fell into the butterfly very neatly. After playing around with the strapping a little and toying around in them for 10 minutes, I was in heaven. Not to take away from my Velocities at all because they're so comfortable you could put a baby to sleep behind them while taking shots from Chara all day, but the reduced height and width along with the bare channel made me feel like I could fly with these things on. Seriously, it was eye-opening. My initial hesitation with the RBK line was that the back looked really chintzy. Not to exaggerate, but they looked like the back of my lovely DR pads. I was pretty worried about the 8K line being a huge step down from the pro pads, but they had a number of the PS2 pads in stock too, and the difference was negligible. I guess in this case perception was reality. They looked lovely so I assumed they were. I tried the PS2s on for size and they didn't fit noticeably better or more comfortably, so I was satisfied that I wasn't taking a huge dive with the Sr. series. I walked out with a pair in white/silver, about as close to all-white as you can get. I can't wait to try these on ice. I can see a few areas that the cheaper material will give way in absolutely no time, but luckily it's all areas that I can easily reinforce myself. They didn't have the 7400 velocities yet. Apparently they're already in Canada but sitting in a container in BC somewhere. I tried the V3s on for size and they were really loving nice, but I'm not ready to drop the $1400 CDN. They estimated the price to be somewhere in the $699 area for the 7400s which may be BS or may not be, but what do I know. Anyway, pics later. Fruit is usually a good pick-me-up if you want to avoid Red Bull and the like. It doesn't sit nearly so heavily in your stomach as energy drinks do, but the kick isn't quite as powerful.

More important than any of that is drinking two gallons of water today, not tomorrow. Drink plenty during the first game too, but if you aren't hydrated by bedtime tonight you are so incredibly hosed it's scary. Especially if you're playing roller, which I'm guessing you are. I love the snaps on the velos, and really once I find a length I like I doubt I'll ever really change it again, so why not v v

What's the point of the extra strip of material running down the outside of each pad? Every once in a while when playing ball hockey with terrible pads I used to wear pads on the wrong leg so they were on the inside and gave me a tiny chance of actually being able to close my pads together. Having done so I never figured out what the point of them was or why you'd want them on the outside of the pad rather than the inside.
