It's one day after my first time playing goalie and I already ordered pants.. I am going to a local pro shop tommorow to see what sizes I need for everything but I need some recomendations.

I've been looking at iTech masks and they seem to be a reasonable price.. but are they comfortable/protect well? My mask price range is $200-250(new). What kind of masks does everyone wear?

btw I play roller.

Whaddya think about this junker?

Alright kids.. I need some more imput. Got a chest protector (some 80 dollar alright thing), Mission pant/girdle combo, and a jersey. I am thinking for legs pads/blocker/catcher.. going with this..

http://goaliemonkey.com/rbk-goalie-equipment-combo-6k-sr.html

Nice colors, decent price, and three less things I have to worry about. For a mask I have picked this..

http://goaliemonkey.com/vaughn-goalie-masks-vm7500-reaper.html

So that just leaves a stick, which finding full-right sticks seems to be a pain in the rear end, and some elbow pads (going with Bauer ones). Any insight is appreciated.. and yeah I'm going all new.. because.. I want to?

Also for any outdoor goalies.. how do you live during the summer?

Yeah, my chest protector didn't come with elbow pads.. (70 bucks at a pro shop.. wasn't a bad deal). I am still thinking about returning the chest protector because of the lack of elbow pads and pick up something like this..

http://goaliemonkey.com/sherwood-goalie-chestprotective-ab9960srd.html

Or preferably this..

I should just give someone $1000 bucks and tell them to return to me with gear.

I'm kinda torn on a decision.. I am getting ready to order my leg pads, but dunno which size to pick. I went to my local pro shop the other day and tried on 32" and 34". I definatly liked 34" better.. but.. 36"?!

I am 5'9" with my heel to knee being around 20"... anyone have a good reason to get a 36" pad compared to a 34" with someone who doesn't know a difference (aside from two inches..hurr hurr penis jokes)?

What I'm really trying to ask is.. is there any disadvantage of going too big?

Finnaly got all of my stuff today and played for about two hours or so. Everything is so stiff but I can feel some of it breaking in already. Alright time for some newbie questions...

1. Why the gently caress were my leg pads slipping off to the left or right.. they were tightened as tight as possible.. but I had to keep hitting them back into place.
2. Holy hell.. after an hour I thought I was going to die from heat exhaustion/lack of endurance. It was outside and fairly cool but still.. we were playing half rink and I had to take a break after about an hour... I will chalk this one up to smoking.. and the fact that I am out of shape. (drat cubicle job)
3. My five hole sucks rear end..not playing on skates next time
4. Holy hell that was a blast.

Any comments.. general tips for not sucking at everything.. and anything else you would like to tell me would be great.. gently caress I'm tired.

fake edit: Any other videos anyone recommends besides the ones in the OP that I watched about 50 times at work today would be helpful... and what the hell are those shoelaces on the ends of my pads for!!!

The skates thing is because I have actual roller blade skates.. heavy as hell. New skates are not on the top of my list for right now.. so while playing a pickup game at a local rink Im going to rock out shoes.

I did like skates better as oppsosed to no skates due to manuverability, however when the puck was behind the net it was a bitch going back and forth. I swear I was a better skater when I was 15.. but eight years later.. I apparently suck now.

Marty.. when you first learned how to play goalie.. just to get the basic movements down etc.. were you on skates right away or did you practice on feet first?

I really wanna use my skates.. but I think it would be benificial to me.. at least for getting basic movements down.. to go in shoes for now.. Does that make sense or should I just suck it up and use my skates?

Yeah I think I will stick with the skates.. I'll practice in socks on the carpet at home to get the movements down..

Played a pickup game today 3v3. I did at least 200% better than on Monday. The pads are starting to break in nicely, and that, I found out.. helps a poo poo-ton.

My five hole is still weak, but I have a real nice sprawl.. just gotta learn to keep my legs closed on the butterfly. Moving around on the skates and going through the movements is getting a lot easier, you guys were right, although I cannot slide for the life of me (lovely skates, painted smooth cement).

But yeah, gotta work on that five hole and high shots....time for bed now.. gonna be hurting tommorow..

Got to wear the pads on the court all of one time before the knee injury. PMA and sba already know, but torn medial meniscus. Looks like my two options are surgery or other surgery.

On Monday, I twisted my knee or something. Planted my left foot into the ground and then turned to the right which resulted in me instantly falling to the ground wanting my leg to fall off. Going to the hospital for x-rays finnaly.. was hoping it would just heal, but I realise that isn't the case now.

How often, and what is the most common injuries everyone gets?

This really blows because we have our first league game tommorow night, aside from wrapping it real tight and wearing a leg brace what should I do?

Going to a specialist tomorow to see what the hell is wrong with my knee.. in the mean time.. what would be good to use to clean my pads? I just spray them down with febreeze before I throw them in my bag.. seems to be working well..although they are a bit dirty.

If I got time off.. I figure I should come back clean... :)

I got hurt about 3 weeks ago so I haven't played since. Finally got back on the ice today. Holy poo poo. I had no idea it would be that difficult getting back into rhythm. Felt like I was flailing all over the place. I do not recommend taking 3 weeks off.

I've been playing regularly for a couple months now about 2-3 times a week. But for the last three weeks due to lovely rainy weather and some junior olympics going on at the indoor rink, I've only played once.

About a month in playing goal I quit smoking, which helped a lot.. but then I started up again, and combined with the lack of playing.. oh man. Played today finnaly in 90% humidity and 87 degree weather..outside.. I felt like absoulte poo poo, and I did horrible.. some 12 year old Ukranian kid schooled my rear end.. Uhg, gonna be playing a few more times before our game on Sunday.. hope that helps.

Should quit smoking too.... less beer also. I HATE YOU SUMMER!! :argh:

Attention Forwards:

When you are losing 2-0 to the worst team in your league going into the third period, and are getting outshot 26-8 here's a list of things you shouldn't say to your goalie when he tries to encourage you to play better:

1) "Maybe you should make a save"

Wow.. my forwards say the same thing too.. although they are a bunch of "gangsta" fucks. It's funny though because when (if) they shoot it usually just hits the wall right behind the net.. but its my fault we suck..

How the hell do you block the one-timers. If I'm on my far glove side and they pass the puck to my stick side, wide open net. Now I know you just try to slide over there as fast as possible, but in roller it isn't that easy. Sport court slides halfway decent, but on the painted cement I practice on, there is no chance.

Any tips? Feedback from you forwards would be nice here on how to beat you with that poo poo.

Painted concrete isn't so bad.. but they just repainted the rink and they used a push broom or some crap.. so it is tearing up wheels, sticks, and elbows. My pads have yet to be affected, but they are turning blue now...

Did a lot better today.. it's amazing how fast you get out of shape. This douchebag was standing no more than five feet from the crease at all times though.. hooked him once and shoved him countless times.. man that kid was worthless. And playing in the heat takes so much out of you so quick.. uhg.. beer then bed.

I got my RBK 6K about three or four months ago and I play only on painted concrete or sport court. Aside from tearing up some toe ties and the skate belts.. nothing has really been getting torn up too much.

Although I might take Tims idea and improve on it..

Did you bite your lip or something? Musta been a hard hit. My last game some guy slid, hit the post and his ribs went right into the bottom of my skate..

Anyone actually ever get a penalty? I like to push people screening me/in my crease.. and sometimes hook them as they go by. Never got a penalty yet though.. kinda sad. In my defense.. I have a little area to skate around in, you have the rest of the rink.. stay away from my crease.

Time for a new stick.. I have two wood sticks right now and I'm thinking going composite. Should I shell out the 100-200 bucks for a composite or just buy a new wooden one for $50 every three-four months?

I really am only looking for durability here, although a lighter stick never really hurts..

If you have never worked with metal before.. I dont suggest just trying it out. If you can find someone to teach you how to do it, in person, I would say that would be your safest bet.

I don't play ice, but I'm pretty sure this is what you want your skate to look like with a 1/2 radius.. someone correct me if I'm wrong

Basically you are skating on those two very thin sides (I am not sure how thin they would actually be, since I have no ice skates to measure or know what the hell I'm talking about) and the radius (1/2 R) fills up with liquid ice and you kinda float on that.

I think that is the science behind it anyways..

Yes I went all out to explain that.

So I think I wanna start playing ice. How hard of a transition do you think I'll have comming from only roller. I have only ice skated a handful of times.. but am going to start practicing. Should I just go out and buy goal skates right away.. or should I go the more expensive route and get regular player skates and then goal skates?

If anything I think playing on ice would be a bit easier.. I will finnally be able to slide.

Hey thanks.. that was really helpful. There are about 5-6 ice rinks around my area so I don't think I'll have any problem getting in on some public games and such. Any time on the rink would be a benefit and I'm sure I would learn a lot.

Plus the girlfriend wants to try her hand at ice skating.. so I can take her and learn myself.

And I am pretty sure I am doing this wrong.. but for roller hockey I wear:
Thick socks
Knee pads
A girdle/pants/cup combo (it is a thinner girdle made for roller hockey players, but works well as goal pads)
And then over all that I wear some hockey pants.

I just got a thicker girdle/pants set from my buddy, but they are ugly/green/old.. and I was wondering if anyone wears hockey pants outside of their girdle. I would imagine on ice they would get wet and heavy..

Looked at some RBK 5ks.. nice boot pretty comfy. Online they run 189ish.. at the store they were 299 with a free bake and sharpening.. so I can justify that I think.
