Where do I start with Sheena Ringo? She's been around awhile, so where do I go to understand her musical identity in general? I asked this in a separate discord as well recently, and I was told her that her "Tokyo Jihen" stuff was good, but I don't know exactly how that lines up with her career and discography.

Psyber Spine posted:Thanks guys. I guess I'm looking more for songs with a good variety of instruments being used and the same sort of happy, lively sort of vibe. At my old workplace, my coworkers *loved* J-Rock, and, while it doesn't fully apply to your request, a certain band might, as long as your okay with a more 2010s, radio-friendly presentation. It's less big bandy, but I feel that it captures the lively feel of the song you linked, if not in an alt-rock format. I was shown a band called [i]Gesu no Kiwami Otome[/i}, and while they have an alt-rock sense of progression, they clearly have a jazzy sense of instrumentation when it comes to things like rhythm guitar and piano. My hipster friend called them a "Japanese Phoenix". Here's a couple links, I hope you enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apr2JCdpTbQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae6gQmhaMn4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJdNqxOykw8

Where do I start with Palm? I'm a dude who loves bass-and-groove-heavy compositions, so I love what I've heard of their work, but the only songs I've saved are Second Ward and Composite. Both are good, but I want to know a little more from more cultured music fans about their place in their own cultural timeframe in general. So bands or influential acts around them are welcome as well, if that additional request is okay in this thread. Blue Labrador fucked around with this message at 13:25 on Jun 23, 2021 |

I only got into pop in the early 2010s with Ke$ha and Lady Gaga. Can people tell me what to look at for Brittany Spears, and what exactly made her so big? She was a little before my time, so I don't fully understand the hype. My only real exposure to her is Toxic, which is a phenomenal pop hit and dance.

Gotcha, thanks for giving info everyone. I was curious if there was something especially unique about her sound production or choreography or something like that, but it's still an interesting slice of pop-culture history that she was the media star before the internet became super mainstream. I'll check her out more, but I'm glad to know there's not anything technique-wise or macro-culturally I'm missing out on.

Mastodon, how should I go about getting into them? I'm like, 8 minutes into an Adult Swim concert link I saw in the Stoner Doom thread, and I'm loving how smooth and groovy it is. Is this like their other work? I only have a passing knowledge of Baroness, but this set reminds me of Teeth of a Cogwheel and I love that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh1ZLEA5rGg

I just listened to Porcupine Tree for the first time, specifically the song .3, and the bass is so darn groovy, I love it. They've been around awhile, yeah? What are the best entry points for a new listener, or what kind of eras do they have?

So I am absolutely in love with what little St. Vicent I've encountered, but two of the four songs I'm going to list are in collaboration with David Byrne, and I know nothing of her preferred style or influence on whatever genre she finds herself in. How do I get into St Vincent, and what overarching themes, genres, and motifs is she about? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiiKyvlwkJA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Dcn1gIl2Co https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88fYk06mLH4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYDRg40UVko
