We're making our invitation list right now and I told him to start with 50 people for himself and 50 for me and we'd work on it from there. He was at 66 before finishing his family (immediate/aunts/uncles/cousins only). I can't even hit 50 with friends and family

But it seems like his relatives would feel snubbed if not invite. He also seems to be inviting an ex, so...

No questions really, it wont be so bad since half the people I'm inviting wont be able to come anyway (my mom is from the Bahamas and I live in the Boston area... oh and my relatives in Guam probably wont show either) but honestly, just how many people can you invite?

I'm 25, he's going to be 25 in about two weeks. We started dating in January '08, moved in together August '08, got engaged May '09 and we'll be getting married in June '10. Oh, and as of October 3rd, we'll be home owners. It seems really quick when I type it out, but everyone who knows us (even our parents) didn't seem the least bit surprised. Quite a few said "finally!". We don't plan on having kids.

I never even thought I would get married, much less at this age, but it doesn't feel wrong. Oh, and he proposed with an iPod touch (I'd wanted one but didn't want to buy it when I had an ok iPod already - even if he did scratch it by dropping it in the driveway...) Good thing I hate wearing rings, and I always have my "engagement pod" on me to show off.

My fiance's grandfather is a JP and will be doing our ceremony, but asked if he could meet with us first for a little quick counseling. Is that weird? His family is Irish Catholic and mine has a history of people running off to islands and marrying the pretty girls they find (I'm half Bahamian, my aunt is from Palau... my sister in law is from England, lol).

I don't think his grandfather is especially religious, but does anyone have a general idea of couples counseling?

I'm going to be getting some pieces from Etsy. I just like unusual things I guess, but here are some cool jewelry stores (getting it directly from the maker is always a plus in my book):

Finally! We've secured a hall, which meant I had an address to put on the invitations, so I just ordered all our invitations. We were lucky to find a hall since the wedding is June 5, so a lot of places were taken. It's lovely and $400 including a bar tender, all the tables/chairs, kitchen, etc for 120 people.

I've also ordered some decorations, and it's starting to feel like it's just around the corner!

I'm not planning on getting a florist - maybe we'll buy a few bouquets and put them in vases around the room (or go with my idea of having a Godzilla at every table) but I want it as low key as possible. Hell, I wanted to elope!

Actually I'm considering doing what a friend did, and that's put some sort of game/board game at every table - Rubik's cubes, Things, toys. Something to keep people interested if they don't feel like milling around...

At this point I'm ready to do whatever crazy thing pops into my mind. The latest drama is the fact that I've banned the Chicken Dance from being played. Apparently that's caused quite a stir with my fiance's family and they're upset with me. I just hate that loving song so much.

My mom's going to take me out to get a nice sun dress, so it'll be well under $200. I'm so glad I told everyone it's going to be a very casual wedding. Everyone's happy with me, and I get a pretty dress and don't have to feel gross and washed out in white :iia:

Eh, we're probably just going to make a day of it and go from store to store starting with TJ Maxx and Marshalls, and probably ending with Nordstrom and whatever else is in that drat mall. Also there's an Off the Rack sort of near me, so I'll probably drag her there as well.

I'm not sure they have them in stock quite yet, but I probably wont be looking until the end of April or Mayish

You too, eh? 120 at least coming to our wedding. To help with the food, we're getting a local roast beef place to cater some and asking people to bring their favorite dishes (like a potluck). In fact with our hall and food we're still going to come in under $500 (NOT an open bar - if folks want to drink a lot they can come to our house afterward and be rowdy). I'm hanging Tibetan prayer flags for decorations ($15 for ten sets) and leaving lavender sachets on the tables as favors for folks who want them (my mom got the lavender, 50 bags were $8). We may or may not get rings to exchange - neither of us likes wearing them - but we'll spend $125 at most for a pair.

And I don't know about other folks, but four grand is not cheap.

Do you think it really matters if we ignore the traditional "wintery" type things? We want to do a really bold, clean looking wedding, I think we're looking at deep blue and orange as our colors. I would do it in the spring if I could but I'd either have to wait another year or do it for less than $1000.

Absolutely do it the way you want to. Besides, what will folks remember and enjoy more, generic wedding crap or something colorful and fun?

My mom and I fought over my dress (she offered to take me out and buy it) but eventually came to a compromise in which we're both happy with the dress, and she ended up buying me two. Win win! But then whenever we're around each other more than one hour we tend to fight.

Basically I want a CASUAL wedding, implying that people should dress CASUALLY. But she said my dress choices were too CASUAL! Also she wanted floor length while I wanted knee length or shorter. And she wanted white, and I hate wearing white... Casual, mom. Casual. And I'm tall enough that floor length makes me look like some kind of she-hulk.

Hulk smash!

Who ever decided a surprise wedding shower was a good idea? I thought I was going to have lunch with my folks and didn't bother changing out of my dirt-covered gym clothes. But no, all my and my fiance's female relatives were there with cameras :smithicide:

Also who ever thought that many women in one room was a good idea. Nothing like 30+ women arguing over whether it's safe for me to have another cookie. It was a 50/50 split whether or not it would affect my wedding dress.

It was worth it for the awesome gifts (including my great grandmother's cocktail recipe book).

As ready as I'll ever be! Luckily (well, mostly luckily) my mom stepped in and took over the job of wedding planner, so as far as we can tell everything's all set. The only thing not completely planned is the reception back at our house for our friends - we have 35 confirmed but about 20 people have read the invite but not responded :argh: just say no, it's ok.

Has anyone proposed with a super nontraditional ring? My g/f is pretty awesome and sometime I will propose to her, but she doesn't want a normal ring. No diamonds or a chunk of rock sticking out. She just wants a nice simple ring.

Any suggestion? I've been looking at a variety of wood rings around titanium, but that's about it.

My non-traditional engagement ring:

My grandma died shortly before the wedding, so I also got her more traditional engagement ring, and wear that.

For my wedding ring, I got this one from Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/shop/SpiritJoyDesigns) and I quite like it

Oh, and my wedding happened! June 5th, yo.

as you can see, very low budget and not very traditional, but it was so much fun
maid of honor/bff, moi, sexy man and his "best man" which his family found pretty confusing

me and my family being all blurry

My sister's gift to us was to make ALL the dessert:

Signing our lives away:

His grandfather performed the ceremony and it was really awesome. We asked for it not to be too religious or traditional, and he wrote a short speech and also had a Native American blessing to say at the end. Ryan crushed my hand during the whole thing - I thought he was going to faint.

we were so lucky to be surrounded by such mature and tasteful adults

the natural response when my mom says: Abby, smile!

this table was constantly surrounded by, well, everyone - especially the under 15 crowd

hopefully someone else got a better picture of this and will give it to me at some point - he managed to rub frosting in my hair :wtf:

he's just so *dreamy* (my sister made a whoopee pie cake just for him)

we put a few containers of play dough at every table, and people periodically came up with offerings of strange creatures...

me and my bro, also a goon

it was a good-sized hall that we got for a great price!

my aunt and her vaginanose

we were pretty tired by this point...

yep, going to leave it with "pretty tired"

my mom and maid of honor did all the flower arranging

we even had a small party for the local squirrel population

We handed out a bunch of disposable cameras, but haven't gotten those developed yet. So some pictures may come in the future?

We weren't expecting gifts either, so we ended up just waiting until the next morning (complete with a bunch of friends sleeping over) and opened them at our home. And by that I mean I opened them. I opened the cards at the same time, and we sent thank-you cards to everyone who showed up at the wedding and/or sent us a gift.

It seemed best not to open them at the wedding itself because folks were too busy to crowd around, and I had a surprise shower two weeks before where I had to open gifts in front of an audience..

We got one present we think is re gifted. We're keeping it in the box (since we have no place to put a wicker/silver plate holder and matching condiment basket) and may re gift it some day to friends as a joke.

We got two crock pots from different people :psyduck: the first one I was all, oh, a bigger crock pot - that's nice! I had a small one so I told my mom she could have our old one. Then we got another! In fact the same model as our old one! But they gave us the receipt with it and we returned it to Macy's and got a nice king-sized blanket since our queen sized one never seems big enough...

If you end up using the play dough as well, make sure if you take it home, not to leave it on the kitchen table. My cats ate all the little sculptures and we're still finding oddly-colored piles of vomit in hidden places.

I had a bachelorette party at my house with a bunch of my friends, and it was pretty awesome. We got all sorts of phallic candies and cakes (got some online and I made my sister get some at the erotic bakery near her work since it was funny to see her embarrassed... and she ended up buying a bunch of chocolates too) and some goofy decorations. My sister and my best friend got to my house a few hours before I did and put together all my favorite foods from my childhood, and some other snack foods, and started a fire out behind the house. So we had music, goofy foods, fire, sexy madlibs, we even had a porn (xxx Big Lebowski - it's pretty terrible). And we got completely hammered and had a great time. Quite a few people slept over, so that was fun too.

So basically we had a big house party with a bunch of girls (though my husband showed up at the end, since he has to sleep somewhere, and had fun doing sexy madlibs around the fire).

Alternatively, his bachelor party included batting cages, a stretch SUV, go-carts, a strip club, vomiting on his shoes, two whole days of activities, etc.
