NVaderJ posted:For the driving I do, yes I get 13 mpg. I drive approximately two miles to work, and I assume that the low speed (speed limit is 25 the whole 2 miles) and four stop signs conspire with cold Michigan winters to keep my fuel economy in peak-oil-inducing levels. On longer trips I get up around 17-17.5 on the highway. That makes sense. My xj on 33" mud terrains gets 15mpg most the time, but I do mostly country driving.

It's what I tell people who have no towing experience and want to to something ridiculous with their crappy vehicle. All the reliability of the 4.0L with the power of a better small-block V8. Strokers are so drat hot. I was reading a write up a while ago were they put a 4.6l stroker in a wrangler and completely reworked the suspension. It ended up with 36" tires and an awesome sound. Some day I want to get a cherokee, do the back window delete and drop a stroker in there for some hot high speed cherokee action.

The engine has all the wiring, the computer, alternator. Jeep currently has a 4Cylinder 2.5L AMC, and an AX5 tranny. Am I missing anything or any advice before I buy it and start taking things apart? Your going to probably want to trade out the whole drive train and beef up the suspension for this swap. What axles does it have?

Valgarv posted:As far as I know the axles are stock. I have a np231 transfer case which from what I've read should be able to take the sm 465. Depending on what year you are probably running a dana 30 up front and a dana 35 out back. If that is the case a v8 will trash those pretty easily. Use this to try and figure out what you have or take pictures and post them here.

Disciple of Pain posted:Everyone says that, but IMO it is mostly true for when you are shopping for a Jeep. If I'm going to build an off-roader and will be swapping the axles (which if I were you I wouldn't do until those 35s let go, it could be a LONG time if you are careful with the skinny pedal - or it could be sooner) I'd go for Dana 60s or some other full-size truck axle. In my experience they are probably just as easy to find (there are a lot of 1 ton trucks in junkyards with perfectly fine axles), you will need to do some fabricating though - but you'll end up with an axle that can take huge tires + abuse and pretty much never break. It depends on what type of offroader he is trying to build. If he just wants something with 33" tires I wouldn't go over a dana 44 because you are just losing ground clearance. Not everything need to be overbuilt. If he does want to go big then more power to him.

Well we had a good rain storm last night which means I had to go for a little drive. The area is all red clay and sand, so there was a lot of washed out ruts and mud puddles. I did get stuck leaving because I put it in 2wd and then hit a mud puddle at the bottom of a small hill that was hidden by grass. I have to say that driving through loose wet sand it more fun than I would imagine.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone to get and and exercise your transfer case. I really love my cherokee. No I didn't go all the way over. To little ground clearance and to much rebar sticking out.

First thing I would do is check and make sure nothing is loose and striking something else. Other than that I can't help for a clunk.

I found an awesome little 1 mile trail that you definitely need a small 4wheel drive with a good lift to get through. In one section I had a less than 2" of clearance on either side of the Cherokee. The trail leads to a nice little camping spot by Lake Conroe that I am going to take some friends to next week. If anyone in the Houston area is looking for a good camping spot with no activity feel free to PM me for GPS coordinates.
