Cherokees were replaced by Liberty's in 2002 unfortunately. You could find a 2001 4.0L XJ, which are durable and excellent cars in all possible way. I don't understand why Jeep decided to replace such an iconic car with a car that's not doing that great in sales. They could have just made the interior a bit more modern and look into fixing up the grill a bit (such as how the chinese are modifying their Cherokee 2500), but hey that's Jeep for you. At least they haven't mutilated the Wrangler.

I think the Cherokee is the best looking Jeep ever built and the 99-01's look fantastic. The Cherokee 2500 grills look awful to me, not nearly as clean as the last XJ grill. I keep holding out a sliver of hope that someone at Fiat will say "hey, let's bring back this Cherokee thing and the 4.0 along with it."

The problem with the I6 is that it powers the Cherokee (discontinued), the old Grand Cherokee (discontinued) and the Wrangler and nothing else. It's a big heavy bulky engine that doesn't fit in the majority of what's offered in the MOPAR family. It makes sense that it's dead, sad as it is. They're not going to produce an engine that only powers one vehicle. It's not economically viable in today's automotive manufacturing climate where everything is platform shared and parts-bin. The old EGH (minivan) motor meanwhile can plop right into just about everything they poop out.

Well the obvious solution is for Chrysler to redesign every vehicle intheir lineup to fix the 4.0.

Any ideas about the gauge lights though? The radio still dims when I turn on my lights so could it just be the 12 year old bulb in the dash? The odometer doesn't dim anymore either but I don't know if that's just because of the extra draw for the gauge light.

My gauges cut out all the time. I've found a light smack on the dash brings them back to life.
As for the driver's speaker wires, pretty much every Cherokee owner I know has had his driver side speaker fail on him. Mine's been out for 3 years.

Well I'm torn.

My Jeep's got quite a few problems, many of them due to my neglect. Just adding up parts comes to $1100 to get everything in full working order.

OR

There's a white XJ on a local lot nearby. Same year, very close mileage and a a full maintenance history which mine didn't have when I bought it. The lot's owned by a friend I know from one of my jobs so I trust him. He's got it stickered pretty drat cheap too.

My loving rear lights!

Two weeks we ran out to lunch and since we had to go different places, my girl drove separately. While we're driving she calls me to tell my my left brake light isn't working. So I run to Autozone to buy a bulb and it still doesn't work. Well then 2 days later the right side brake light stops working bu in this case when I turn on my driving lights the bulk lights up but it doesn't intensify when I hit the brakes.

Now I had a trailer hitch installed by U-Haul a few months back and everything worked perfectly but it's my thinking that something they did caused a short. I took it over there and they tested everything and claimed nothing they did had gone wrong. All my fuses check out so is it possible the new wire harness caused a short somewhere?

So I bought the new radiator today, this is another job I've never tackled before but so far I haven't made the Jeep undrivable with my lack of know-how. Can anyone point me towards a step-by-step radiator replacement guide for an XJ? I assume it's pretty much
1.) drain radiator,
2.) undo hoses and bolts,
3.) pull out old radiator,
4.) put new radiator in place,
5.) reattach hoses and bolts,
6.) fill with fluid,
7.) profit.

But specific instructions with pictures would be nice. I have the whole weekend off so I'm planning on tearing into this on Friday afternoon and I then have til Monday afternoon to get it done.

Yesterday was not great. I was driving home from work when my Jeep overheated, warning tone and light went off so I pulled over to asses things. Now, I knew I needed a new radiator (It was waiting at home to be installed when I had time) but I had been topping off my coolant constantly until I put in the new one.
So I pop the hood and it's a mess and I'm clueless and demoralized. I don't have AAA and I've broken the bank on Christmas this year so I can't afford a tow. I let her cool off for 10 minutes and started off again. Shortly after we're overheating again so I have to stop and do it all over again. I finally made it off the highway to a parking lot where I figured I'd have to leave it until I can sort it out.
At this point I figure I'm going to be doing my radiator swap in this parking lot sometime on Christmas afternoon. I'm pissed, depressed and ready to set the truck on fire. Then I remember, I put a bottle of radiator stop leak in the other day and it had no noticeable effect. It was some weird kind with "dissolving sealant pellets" but the pellets weren't dissolving. So I tap the radiator cap. It's ice cold. I unscrew it and the pellets have solidified and blocked the cap, including the hose from the coolant bottle. I have no tools except for a lovely multi-tool my father gave me 14 years ago so I tried using that but it was useless. I found a plastic hanger with a metal hook, broke that off and straightened it and used it to clear the inlet. I poured in some coolant and and cleanly drained into the radiator. Hooray! She cooled down and I got her home. For the first time I felt like a real Jeep owner, I fixed her on the side of the road without real tools!

So that brings me to the radiator swap. I've gotten all the major connections and bolts out but I have one hang-up. I can't get one of the quick connects to the ac condenser unhooked. But the thing is, I don't have AC anymore. My AC compressor died last year and I replaced it with a AC delete pulley. So since I don't have that and don't plan on putting in a new compressor do I need to bother hooking up the old condenser or even putting it back in?

Doctor Zero posted:

And THIS, kiddies is why you don't use that stop leak poo poo.

I'm not sure if you have to hook that up or not, but i can tell you that it *is* possible to get the radiator swapped out without taking the thing off. It will take another person, and some rope or something to hold it while the radiator is out, but I have done it before. If i remember correctly, to do it, you will have to take the front end off (not as bad as it sounds) and lift it out of the way. You can then shimmy the radiator out from under it and tilt it to get it out.

By the way, you may want to replace your thermostat while you're in there. God knows what that crap did to it, and it's cheap and easy to swap.

Literally the only thing holding the radiator and condenser in is the one ac line. That's it, everything else is unhooked. I was just curious if I needed to put it back in as it seems like a waste of time since I'm not running AC anymore.
And I have a brand new thermostat ready to go in along with a water pump and new upper and lower radiator hoses.

I'm not worried about the headgasket, she overheated 3 or 4 times two years ago. And she only has to survive to May and then I can park her and work on her at my leisure. I flushed it as best as I knew how but I'm not too worried, the stop leak pellets didn't even make it into the radiator, they'd caked up just under the cap.

Edit: Drove her to work this morning and didn't smell even a hint of coolant and there wasn't a wisp of smoke or steam. Hooray!

Tracked down the new leak, it was the lower radiator hose. Funnily enough I'd bought a new one two years ago when I replaced the upper hose and forgot to swap it. It's probably not a bad idea to check or change all your coolant hoses if you replace your radiator.

If you clamp it, use exhaust joint adhesive (seriously) on the joints and lots of loctite or locking nuts on the clamps, let it all set for a day before you run it.

So I bought a new muffler, cut the tailpipe off the old one and bolted it all together.

It's now more quite than it's ever been in the seven years I've owned the Jeep. I have the tailpipe strapped up a little too close to the car so I've going to go buy a urethane bushing to go onto the original hanger. I also want to put another hanger near the front of the muffler just to be extra safe. As suggested I used Locktite on all the bolts and I'm not driving it until tomorrow morning.
