What about vars(widget_a)? That returns a dict of the instance attributes.

>>> class Foo:
        ...
>>> foo = Foo()
>>> vars(foo)
{'bar': 1, 'baz': 'baz', 'qux': 1.5}

EDIT: There's also widget_a.__dict__ but that's everything including methods.

EDIT 2: Rereading, you're trying to avoid having to do that. :doh:
