Considering that place and time period, unless she wanted to whitewash the story this scenario was by far the best. The opposite (20 guy, 12 year old girl) would be far more common, but since Mori's not an idiot there's no way she'd ever do anything like that. It's a decent trade off between historical accuracy and what we as a society can accept.
