Is shucking hard drives a good strategy? I am building an Unraid server, but only have 6 bays, so I don't want to use 2 or 4 TB drives. Can I get some advice, goon sirs?

Got my Dell H200 flashed over to IT mode! After loving it up, (gotta be my true self and all) got it working! I need to get better about reading the loving instructions.

Unraid parity is done bit by bit using an XOR calculation, I think. DDD = P 000 = 0 001 = 1 010 = 1 011 = 0 100 = 1 101 = 0 110 = 0 111 = 1 By having the 2 remaining disk values, and the parity value, it can infer what the missing value was. Tldr: It does some math bit by bit across all drives to calculate the parity value. It takes a while.

Munkeymon posted:Dunno why they call that Not Safe for Wallet because it sounds extremely reasonable to me Yes. I love that I have a ridiculous beast workstation that didn't have a ridiculous budget. I just recently I would have built another E5 Xeon, but my budget was only $450 and I wanted a rackmount case. I couldn't make it work building it myself. The horsepower/dollar ratio in the V1/V2 E5 Xeons is crazy.

Might finally get to fill out this huge rocketfish case a bit more. It's had nothing but tiny motherboards in it to this point. Congrats! Beefy servers are fun!

If your ISP doesn't give you a "real" IP address, perhaps change ISPs? It sounds like they are just giving you a local IP to their network, right? I mean, doesn't that mess up all kinds of poo poo?

Enos Cabell posted:Building an Unraid server is no harder than building a typical desktop PC, and the software is super easy. This is true. If you have the parts, I would recommend Unraid. If you don't, I would recommend Synology. Synology has nice apps for mobile stuff.

There are multiple YouTube videos that do this. The only technical thing is the separation of the IOMMU groups to hold that video card out of Unraid, so it's available for the container/VM. Edit: I just remembered one thing that a guy did to make it easier on himself was to use a USB hub. He assigned the USB hub IOMMU group to the VM as well, this meant anything plugged into that hub automatically went to the VM without further fuckery. dexefiend fucked around with this message at 13:28 on May 28, 2019 |

I use pfsense as my router, and use OpenVPN to connect home. It works great. I followed the YouTube videos from Lawrence Systems to set it up.

I am less of a Linux expert than most people in this thread. I love Unraid. Nothing bad has happened to me. I like the simplicity and the Community Apps/Docker container library is a great resource. Watch the SpaceInvader Unraid videos on Youtube.

Pfsense router running OpenVPN server makes my home network janitor life easier. Use it. Make your life easier too! I followed the video that Laurence Systems (or something like that) has on YouTube. I have multiple things running on my network and it's nice that it takes care of all of them. Also, I can VPN from whatever garbage internet hotspot/hotel and have people not sniffing my packets.

Where do you even find 230TB of Hentai? Edit: with that much you probably want dual parity, sooo 220TB of Hentai?

There is an Unraid add on that will turn on the light for a failed drive (assuming you have external bays).

Unraid is great for media and photos (which are backed up to the cloud). If you want to increase the safety of your writes, you can slow down your writes by skipping the cache drive, or run 2 cache drives. Edit: I love the docker implementation. I use it for all my random poo poo: Plex, Factorio Server, various grad school things. As for login security, you have to VPN to my network to get behind the firewall, so I haven't worried about that. I think it is getting changed in the next major release. Horses for courses / right tool for the job. If you are keeping your top secret designs for Skynet on it, maybe use zfs. My setup: Dell R720 with 12 cores and 72gb of ram, 2 x 8tb shucked WD, 2x Seagate 2TB, with a 500GB cache drive. I got a good deal on it, even if it uses too much power. dexefiend fucked around with this message at 15:01 on Dec 9, 2019 |

Yeah, I liked Serve The Home like eight years ago when it was more reasonable. Now it's like "I REPLACED HALF MY RACK WITH THIS ONE WIERD TRICK." ... the weird trick is a $8000 SuperMicro server that is only available to cloud providers based in Portugal. Edit: Quote != Post As a side thought, I have a 19" rack mounted for my network in the basement. Are there any 6-8 3.5" bay 3U-4U 19" depth server cases anyone can recommend? dexefiend fucked around with this message at 14:22 on Mar 20, 2024 |
