Well thread, I replaced my car. With... The same thing. Okay, I gave up the heated steering wheel and headlight washers for 19s and adaptive suspension. But it's otherwise the same car with 30k fewer miles.

It really doesn't help that PA roads are absolute poo poo right now, but that was... jarring.

I just had the local shop do the oil pan gasket on the E36, which had been leaking like the Exxon Valdez. I came out this morning and found this. and this. I politely wrote the shop and asked if there is some expected seepage from a new oil pan gasket or if it takes a moment to set up. (It doesn't). I'll clean it up and run it again later this week and see if the leakage continues.

In the process of redoing my customizations, I put the driver's glovebox back in: This meant the off button for the blind spot warning had to go somewhere, so once again, VHB taped to the inside of the steering column: You can still reach it if you want to turn it off, but I'm not sure why you'd do that outside of a track? Or at all? Anyway it's still there if needed. The dealer logo was like a vinyl sticker of just the letters, and an adhesive bandage removal wipe from the kiddo's medicine cabinet loosened that right up, pretty happy it came off without needed compound or polish. Also went through and turned off the startup warnings etc. While I had the light switch out I trimmed the tabs for rear fog lights, I'll have to program that in at some point soon. This all started because I put the rear seat cover back in and installed the new car seats. My to do list may end up swapping the wheels between the F30 and the F36. 19s with runflats really are brutal, we'll see if they survive day to day. At least I have a set of square 18s with all seasons in the shed I can just chuck on for winter. This one clearly got some sort of update at the dealer, I checked it with MHD and the DME needs a bench unlock, the last one was just ready to go. Kind of interesting. I did proactively replace the coolant expansion tank cap, since that was my issue on the prior car. Not bad for two days.

My 2016 M235i (non nav) idrive keeps randomly fuzzing out and saying "no signal" on the screen. Then it goes blank until I turn the car off completely for a few minutes. When I start it up again, it works like there was never a problem. Anyone know what the gently caress is going on?

I'd start by checking loose connectors to the screen, probably more likely to be that vs a dead screen. You can find replacement screens on ebay for ~$200 if you think that might be the issue.

No, I've tried searching bmw forums, but most of the posts end with "so I took it to the dealer and they did something", but I was hoping that someone else here had the same experience and could offer an actual real world solution. It's not behaving like its the screen, more like it's something with the idrive/head unit. I only say that because the stereo cuts out and I get a "no signal" on the screen before it goes totally dark. I upgraded the firmware, but that didn't seem to fix the issue. I'll start checking connectors, like you said. Maybe that's what's going on.

You need to pull the codes and see if there's a clue in there.

Finally got around to getting a new car after 11 years in a VW Polo, got a 2023 Mini Clubman S which is basically a BWM 1-series underneath but without the ugly pig nose, so I feel like it's correct to post about it here. Haven't picked it up so no pics yet, but for me at least it's an upgrade is basically every way over my current car and it will let me avoid having to deal with touchscreen controls and intrusive driver 'aids' for as long as possible.

Bjork Bjowlob posted:Do any 2008+ E9X M3 owners here have the Dinan pulley kit installed? If so, could you check what the AC/PS belt length is? Some owners have said it's a 6DPK1070 (link to discussion, makes it the same as the Turner kit), however after asking Dinan directly they say it's a 6DPK1050. I'm curious whether their design was changed recently, or perhaps the shorter belt is easier to source, not sure. Answering this for posterity - the replacement PS/AC belt ECS Tuning sent was a 6DPK1070 (on the second attempt, the first time they sent a completely different belt for some flavour of Nissan)

I picked up a giant bolt in one of my rear tires on the Alfa. I have a replacement covered under Tire Rack's road hazard warranty. Question for this crew: Can I replace just one of the tires on the driven axle? The tires have 2700 miles on them. I'm worried one tire with more tread will mess with the torque vectoring differential. Not edit: In typing this out I'm wondering if the new rear tire could be shaved down to match the undamaged rear?
|
# ? Apr 29, 2024 20:56 |

I wouldn't think 2700 miles is that big of a difference unless they're super soft? They probably can be shaved, but that seems like a rather small amount, personally. What tire?

It's a Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02. I should have mentioned that I'm planning to do a track day soon. I looked for experiences people had running HPDE with patched tires and a few people on Grassroots Motorsports forum said it was fine. The Discount Tire tech said their patches are a 22 step process and will hold up to high speed use. I really don't want to go through the hassle of changing a single tire if it's not needed but I also don't want to do something that is unsafe for track work.

# ? Apr 29, 2024 23:03 |

I didn't track it, but my one Firehawk Indy 500 picked up a 3/16" lag bolt within of month of getting the tires on. The patch has been fine on a 335 for the last 5k miles? Ish?

# ? Apr 29, 2024 23:09 |

I’d imagine you’d need to shave a bit on that tire if it were replaced. I probably would not track a patched tire but I am a weirdo, I’d ask the AI track rats probably. Alternatively now is your chance to swap to PS4S (yes lmao $1200 on a set if tires is a dumb answer)
|
# ? Apr 29, 2024 23:45 |

PS4S is $1550 installed. I consciously chose the Continentals. Saved a lot and 99.9999% of my driving is street and highway. Also plan on getting rid of it this year.
|
# ? Apr 29, 2024 23:55 |

Track thread recommendation was to replace the tire. Nails are fine, bolts like mine, especially given how close the head was to going through the tire, are marginal for the loads from a track day.
|
# ? Apr 30, 2024 03:09 |

PS4S are insanely better than the comparable Continentals though.

Whats the ballpark for a fair price on a manual BMW 325 or 328 in the Seattle area from the late 90s? I'm swearing off new cars and looking for a semi-reliable daily driver and this seems like a good candidate if I can find a well maintained example. And speaking of which, what are the common issues I should look for and ask about in terms of maintenance?
