Easiest way is to purchase a car with a valid safety check (30days) and a valid emissions test. Call your insurance with the info and go get a slip for the vehicle. The two of you go to a local MTO and transfer the title and get new plates right there. Go back to address and install on car and driveaway. Drive away.

That's how I bought my (working) Subaru 300km away and drove it home. Went on a Saturday, gave him a deposit to go get a current safety and emissions test. Returned the following Saturday morning and went to his local MTO with the insurance slip from my local office and the paperwork he completed. Title transfer done, taxes paid, insurance proved, new plates purchased, new sticker purchased, new title printed off, and away we went back to his place.

If you find a car without a current safety check and/or e-test then just take the signed ownership after you buy it to the MOT and ask for a temp sticker. They'll charge you the tax, issue you plates, and you'll get a "T" sticker that lets you drive it around for 15 days while you get the safety and e-test sorted. You will absolutely need to have insurance sorted regardless of the temp sticker.

When I lived in NY inspection drove me loving insane, it all depended on which shop you took it to and if the tech inspecting the car was in a bad mood or not. Inspections are more of a money grab than anything else imo.

Indiana is so broke that they were considering instituting inspections and emissions testing but they state doesn't even have the money to start the program. And I guess the study showed that something like 10% of cars in the state would be forced off the road.

As for insurance - anybody have any recommendations for insurance companies or brokers?
My car insurance has always been in Socialist Worker's Paradise provinces, like B.C. and Saskatchewan, so the choice was always simple. Are all of the car-insurance-offering-companies in Ontario roughly the same, or is there one that's either way better than or much worse than the others?

I guess the process there is to phone or visit the insurance company / agent / broker, and tell them I'm considering a particular car. They give me a quote, I go check out the car, and if I decide to buy it I call the insurance company and say "I bought it, let's do this"?

That's not an oil leak. That's the automatic oil change and chassis protection feature.

Colorado does an audit of its emissions program every few years. The last audit determined that the program has no positive effect anymore (high polluting cars generally don't exist anymore, the test failure rate has dropped so low is practically statistical noise, and a car that is failing emissions likely tells the owner and also runs poorly so folks will generally get their stuff fixed), costs money to operate for no benefit (even though the vehicle owners have to pay for each test), and should be axed. The only hitch is that the company that does the testing as a state-granted monopoly makes too much money from the program and isn't afraid to litigate. Instead of eliminating the program, ODB2 e-checks were rolled out for '06 (I think) and newer vehicles. So now instead of paying your $25 for them to put the car on a dyno and do a simulated road test with a sniffer, they spend 2 minutes plugging in a computer and then ask for payment.

This has pretty much been well known for awhile now across the country, Florida got rid of emission testing because of that a long time ago, and any state that still does it is just scamming people out of their money tbh.

Everything about this loving place is a money grab. My friend brought his civic in to be inspected and from his dash cams he could tell that they drove the car into the shop bay, hooked up the OBD reader or whatever computer, and spent 10min scraping the old sticker off.

To be honest I'd be okay with inspections in my state. One of my old neighbors drives a car with wooden floorboards, my sister's ex decided to replace all his wheels with spares because they were cheaper than real tires.

Wood is good enough for English car maker Morgan :smugbert:

We have an "initial safety check and then drive the loving wheels off of it" kind of program.

Depending on the area the OPP do actually conduct "safety blitz" checkpoints to catch people driving miserable vehicles.

Check kanetix online for a simple way to figure out the magnitude of your insurance for various vehicles you might consider. Be prepared for some sticker shock.

Alberta bias here but now that I've used a broker I'll not go back. They did a bang up job - much better than TD which is the usual low rates standby in AB if you're educated.

Call a broker in Ontario and I bet they can put together a comparison sheet of quotes for like your top ten car choices.

Thanks for this! Not too bad for the current ride, though there's a jump of 2x from the cheapest couple to the next level up - about $750 up to close to $1500. I'll be talking to a broker when it's time.
