This was the case with the trans in my MX-6. Just stick an extension through there or tie some wire through the hole. Intermediate shaft needs to bolt to the engine block, so if you didn't already have holes there for it....

Why? Did your spider gears fall out? I mean, I want someone to actually show me proof that they fall out, rather than this "I heard from the forums..."

Not trying to be a dick, I just want to know if I should go shove a 3/8" drive extension through there next time I'm out there.

I didn't have my spider gears all out of my MX6 tranny, but they had slippe down out of place a bit. I ran a wire through the middle of the tranny and was able to use it to 'walk' the gears back up into position.

Just to play it safe, the screwdriver goes in. :colbert:

Hanging the B6 up in the air to pull off the lower tranny bolts first.

B6 and 5 speed have been separated.

Get the BP up in the air to do the exact same transmission removal.

Separated.

Hung up the starter and removed the annoying rear intake manifold brace.

Down to the flexplate. I hate automatics (and frozenphil's love of them).

Thanks for the flywheel, Mr. B6. You've been a sport.

:suicide:

And the clutch. This will be changed out with the transmission in a month or two.

After blasting with the torch and drilling out the loving broken stud, I am left with a clean header to start my exhaust from.

Done for today.

Painted radiator reinforcement with truck bed coating. :v:

Chipping away at the crappy asphalt-tar poo poo.

Upper radiator supper cleaned off and ready for paint.

More chipping.

Painted.

Painted.

Starting to clean up the paint on the driver's fender. Going to try and take it back to the metal to make sure there's no filler. Also, the paint stuck like crap, so I don't want my paint flaking off due to the lovely base.

And some time later.

Mounted battery tray in the rear.

Mounted battery.

Running some 1gauge cable for the power lead and ground to chassis.

Big freaking mess.

A tiny bit more work.

All packed up for tonight.

Pretty much. I don't need a lot of fancy things while I drive (in fact, I prefer almost ZERO options just for simplicity reasons).

I added some cheap speakers (Pyle?) to replace some EVEN CHEAPER speakers that were blown. They were $15 at Princess Auto, so what the hey? The two bolts had secured them in but I added zip-ties for that extra bit of security. Also, the P.O. connected those speakers with alligator clips that were just dangling about.

Clearing out the interior for some super fun (said fun is described below).

Fun time! Poisoned pie, eat your loving heart out. This was done in the span of two hours with the tools pictured below. No dry ice. Just manual labour, a big screw driver, and a big loving hammer. Enjoy. I know I did. :(

Mine has been very supportive of replacing my 300,000km Altima.

Today I'll head out to finish up the work on the driver's side floor. I expect to paint it, then get to work re-installing the interior.

I'll be tossing in the Escort GT rear seats during the swap to gain that super awesome 60/40 split that my 323 never had. :)

The power cable will also be run to the front today and tied down at various points along it's way. The trunk should be completely assembled by this evening (save for the pieces coving the rear struts, those will have to stay out for a bit).

Also, I got the front Escort ZX2 S/R struts assembled with the factory Escort GT springs and upper mounts from a ZX2 as well.

The fun came when I had to install the upper spring mounting plate. On the Escort GT "spring isolator," the hole where the strut comes through is shaped like a circle with opposing sides having two small flat sections. The ZX2 S/R struts are simply a slightly larger perfect circle. So, out comes the die grinder and we're set.

Proving funds and remaining time, I should have the rear ones assembled and maybe installed tonight.

Finally, just to give you an idea of the extra fun about this project. It's stored, with the MR2, in a shop about ~45minutes away from my home. So after a really loving hard day on the car, I have to battle to stay awake on this long and straight highway. I'll have to develop a taste for coffee or something to battle off having a nap against the driver's side window while driving. Oh yeah, and the gas going there and back is starting to add up (mind you, an extra ~80L this week to get ALL this work done so far, isn't really THAT bad).

Finished painting the interior. I decided to get to work on the exhaust since it was rotted to crap anyways.

Laying out the pipes.

Made some brackets to mount the muffler where I wanted. I still have to make a rear mount and reinforce the driver's side mount still.

The muffler is placed exactly where I want it. I have to trim a 1/4" of plastic bumper, but the rear spare tire well is now the lowest point on the car. :v:

EDIT: Yeah, I could have got another muffler with a center outlet, but this one was extremely discounted. Also, this was the last of the cheap 2.25" mufflers we had in stock (the company we bought them from went out of business), so I was bound and determined to get it to fit. I don't care about how it looks, it's all going to be painted black when finished.

I'm going out to work on the car again after work tonight. I'm hoping to run the power battery cable through the interior so I can re-install the carpet and seats. The exhaust will definitely get worked on. I'll most likely get that crazy bend section sorted out and have the straight shot for the catalytic converted made.

Here's a list of days worked on the car so far;

March 14, 2008: Bought the car.
March 20, 2008: Cleaned out the car.
March 31, 2008: New tires and shocks arrived.
April 2, 2008: Got the Escort and started stripping it.
April 3, 2008: More Escort work.
April 5, 2008: Rear suspension out of Escort.
April 7, 2008: Escort out. 323 comes in. Both motors out.
April 9, 2008: Transmissions and flywheels swapped.
April 10, 2008: Cleaning asphalt undercoating and painting
April 11, 2008: More of the same.
April 12, 2008: Last of interior paint. Exhaust started.

Yes, but then the other side (that you can't see) wouldn't line up with the rest of the exhaust, assuming it is offset there as well.

It has to do with the angle coming over the rear suspension. When flipped. it would involve cutting some metal out of the upper support. The angle of the 'frame' rails didn't lend itself to angling TOWARD the center of the car, it had to be slightly angle AWAY from the center (pointing to the right of the picture).

Also, yeah, the inlet would have definitely hosed me if it was flipped.

Got the carpet installed.

The battery cable coming from the back.

And somewhere up here when I get the engine harness installed.

Got the manual seatbelts installed.

The rear seats installed as well.

After the engine is installed, I can put together the center console and drop in the two remaining seats. I'm also going to cut the crappy trunk carpet to drop in around the new gel-cell battery in the hatch. Then, I'll track down a full size spare which fits in the wheel well just perfectly. :)

I've got to modify the fuel rail (because I hate the Ford setup) to accept the high pressure rubber hose and clamps.

I've also got to take apart the front and rear suspension to get my new struts in as well as install the Escort GT sway bars.

There's lots of other things I need to take care of;
- Install Escort GT master cylinder and run appropriate new lines
- Take care of rust hole in driver's wheel well
- Undercoat the crap out of everything to protect against rusty crap
- Sand down the body for paint
- Paint the drat thing
- New tires
- New brakes all the way around (calipers, pads, rotors, flex lines)
- New e-brake cables
- Ahh poo poo, this is getting expensive
- Radiator - probably grab a bigger one from work for under $100 and get it to work. Much bigger, of course.
- New fans. They're either damaged or have a half destroyed shroud.

Ugh. I don't want to think about all this stuff. On top of that, I'm going to need to get some intake gaskets and fuel injector o-rings so I can re-install the fuel rail (and change the intake manifold gaskets, because it will be a WHORE to do it later while the motor is in the car).

I've noticed that the Radiator fans on the newer Proteges are nice and compact as well. They're actually two fans side by side in a narrow package.

car-part.com is telling me that A&L near Tilbury has a couple of late model Proteges to scavenge from. Might be worth taking a look at since its close. I've attached a diagram of the cooling fans from the shop manual.
