Wow, Ive never seen a block that rusty on the cast, thats crazy. Ive got a few 351C's down the side of the garage and they dont look nearly as bad as that, Canadian winters must be a prick!

Time to get some poo poo done. Let's get cracking. Swapping out the valve cover gasket. The old gasket was old and brittle as all gently caress. The 'primer' coat of flameproof flat black on the upper intake manifold. The lower portion of the intake manifold installed. Hammered black is a great colour. Exhaust manifold installed with new gaskets, of course. Fixed up the valve cover with the same flameproof + hammered black combo. I love it. Installed. Transmission installed. This took about an hour as the clutch was misaligned and caused all sorts of fuckery. I sorted it out after two or three transmission pulls. Ready to load. Turns out, it wasn't. I put the rear transmission mount on backwards and caused myself to install and remove the engine three times previous to this shot; Classy. Ran my power wire, tied it down, and mounted some emissions equipment. Re-mounted the fuse box and plugged it into the body harness. No trouble here. So purdy. New 180*F thermostat and gasket installed for good measure. The head looked nice and clean inside, so I'm happy there's no disgusting rust problem in there. He's motivation to get this project done. I want that to me soon. The Escort engine harness had plugged in flawlessly to the 323 body harness except for this one plug. The 323 plug had to be "trimmed" to accept the larger (and useless wires for my application) plug. ECU installed and wired. Cleaned up some of the crap lying around. It's getting closer. See you tomorrow with some new fuel injector o-rings!

This is by far my favorite project thread. Great work, Sock. Would a 323 be a good choice to buy to learn how to work on cars? I've heard it mentioned as such.

What's with the massive shop? Do you rent/own it? do you work there? Can I get some pictures to show me the size of it? You're blazing through this poo poo mang. Awesome.

Wow, great job. You've inspired me to go spend the day working on my car so I can diminish the pile of new parts that have to go on. I'd never heard of Hammered Black before, but it looks great. I would totally OCD out though and paint the Ford and DOHC parts in a contrasting color. Or maybe sand the raised parts back down to metal and polish.

Jeez, it's amazing how little that engine design has changed, the engine bay looks almost identical to the 1.6L DOHC 99 Protege I've got.

Man sock, when you get in the mood you don't gently caress around do you? I'm super jealous of that shop, it was/is your dads or is that something earlier from the 240 thread that I'm confusing? Either way, good job, that black paint is ballin as poo poo and looks nice and clean (+1 rep )as well as functional.

Where in Canada do you live? I'm moving to New York pretty soon, if it's not too far I'd love to come by and check it out when you're done. Hopefully I can find a nice 323 and EGT donor when I get up there. I won't have the benefit of a forklift though.

Randi Challenger posted:Man sock, when you get in the mood you don't gently caress around do you? I'm super jealous of that shop, it was/is your dads or is that something earlier from the 240 thread that I'm confusing? The very same great place. My dad rents the place, I work there, and luckily for me, he also allows me to toy around in there with cars. As for the bins, it relates to the business. Let's just say there's a healthy profit in being a transportation company under the guise of an "environmentally focused business" The basic outline; 1. We put those containers in the backs of supermarkets 2. They put trimmings and expired vegetables in them (expired, not rotten) 3. We pick them up, charge fee, and replace with clean bins (my job is to wash them) 4. We take the full bins to farmers and empty them for free (they feed it to their pig/cattle/animals). 5. Profit. Think of it. $10-15/bin. The average store has 8-15 bins serviced 2-3 times weekly. The only variable cost is fuel and labour (actually, pretty predictable over the past 12 years), while the stores recieve the benefit of; - Cheaper than using a compactor. My father was general manager of Phillip Environmental (back in the early 90's - huge corporation caught internally stealing lots of money in the mid 90s. Let's just say they paid my father very well to leave the company quietly before anything came up ) and has tons of contacts throughout the waste disposal industry. He knows most other waste companies and their prices very thoroughly. - There is no smell/gross poo poo sitting around for weeks while you fill up an entire compactor - Looks good in company bio. EDIT: Also, I think I can pretty much stomach any horrible smell/sight. After ~10 years of washing out all those bins, I've seen/smelled pretty much every awful thing known to man. When we used to service McDonalds, I learned about the sheer ability of a fly to produce maggots in a few days time. Sockington fucked around with this message at 18:50 on Apr 19, 2008 |

I was going to do an oil change on the Focus, but I couldn't find an oil filter wrench and it wasn't budging by hand. Fuel rail installed. Return line hooked up. Getting ready to install the upper manifold. Soldered a wire to the Mazda thermostat sensor I needed to put into the Ford motor to get the gauge to read properly. Installed. Upper manifold installed with throttle body. New ground straps ahoy. Throttle cable installed. Brake booster feed line hooked up. I'm sure there's other little poo poo too. Interior is all in there as well. As for those interested in the shop, here's a few shots from today. Here's the empty one next door we're looking to move into.

Hey sock, since you put a picture of your focus in there, can I ask you a mildly retarded question? I have the same wheels on mine. What do you think about getting them painted/powder coated black? My focus is black too. Other than that, you are rocking that project. I can't wait to see it finished.

Making myself a flange. Original vs. Planned (actually went with a slightly modified 45* bend for more awesomness) Blasting a hole. Original vs. 45* Downpipe Test fitting. Sizing up what I'll need. Welded some flanges on. Test fitting. Made an overkill bracket to mount the cat.

Why did you build an all new exhaust using crush bent tubing rather than mandrel bent tubing or just re-using the factory exhaust from the EGT?

PBCrunch posted:Why did you build an all new exhaust using crush bent tubing rather than mandrel bent tubing or just re-using the factory exhaust from the EGT? Two reasons. 1. I ordered mandrel bends and the stupid company sent me crushed bends. I returned their lovely bends and just bought the ones at work for $5.25/pipe. 2. The factory exhaust was rotted at all the flanges and poorly clamped together (also, smaller than what I'm re-doing it in). I hope my exhaust will last through the apocalypse.

Added the straight section. Added a hanger This is the funky piece that goes over the rear suspension Painted the front downpipe from manifold. High heat flat black. The rest of the exhaust got high heat silver since I was too dirty/lazy to go buy another can of black. Looks fine anyways. And a turn to go around the gas tank, And into the muffler. After the muffler section gets painted black (to hide it even more), it should look fairly stealthy.

I've been keeping up with this thread and it's been moving at a pretty impressive pace for this forum. Just had one question - why remove the sound deadening from the 323? If you're not making it into a track car or anything, is it really worth the pain in the rear end to remove it to save <10kg? I'd imagine it's quite a bit louder in your car during normal driving as well. Did you pull it just so you could paint the floor?

Sock, If you don't mind me asking what kind of welds are those? They look like stick rod but I could be mistaking them for MIG. Usually the stick rod I see typically has that whitish residue that looks almost like a blast radius around the weld. I am curious because won't some types of welds be not as structurally sound as others for your application?

Front to back, it was all done with a lovely stick welder - which highlights my already poor job welding.

To start things off, there's a small video that I uploaded. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf7nF-spw5g Yeah, that's right. I finally did it. Installed the rest of B6 the intake system. The Escort GT one was torn to crap. This stuff is like Lego. Wired up the relay for the foglights. Old filter vs. the longer Toyota filter. More filter = better, right? Installed. Lots of room. All buttoned up for tonight. So AI, what do you think about that? EDIT: \/\/\/\/ One just came off, so I'm not particularly worried about that 1% pass efficiency failure. It's not getting any worse. There'll be a new motor to replace this one that will be off the Fram. Sockington fucked around with this message at 02:10 on Apr 26, 2008 |
