I don't see it as very likely that two nearby, competing stores would vary so much on such a staple item. Home Depot may be selling economy grade studs as a promotional item, while you may be looking at Lowes' better stock. You'll probably want to inspect your stock carefully, because structurally speaking just about any stock will do, but you want wood that is straight, stable and clear (ie free of knots and defects) if it's going to contribute to a piece of furniture.

I consider a suitable workspace to be the bare minimum. You can get tools one at a time - one per year for the big ticket items (tablesaws, etc.) but if you have no place to let them accumulate then your hobby is doomed.
