"I just like to punch people"
The other day a friend introduced me to the Girl Talk album "Night Ripper" and I can't get enough of it. I've never heard anything like this (I usually listen to mostly rock music), but I've always had a bit of a guilty pleasure when it comes to top 40 pop music and I had a blast picking out all kinds of unexpected songs from my past.

I did a bit of research into Girl Talk, and got his second album, but I find it to be much less enjoyable than Night Ripper. I know he's working on a new album that is supposed to drop in the near future, but I was wondering if there are a whole bunch of guys like him that I have simply never heard of.

Is there anyone else out there doing the same kind of music, with the same kind of talent? I would love to get my hands on a few more mashup albums as tight as Night Ripper.

Not nearly as ADD as Girl Talk, but Kleptones "Night at the Hip Hopera" and "24 Hours" are awesome. The first is all using Queen music, with lots of different songs mixed in. The second is more eclectic. Also try to find some of Party Ben's Sixx Mixx's. They are half hour mixes with tons of different mashups from other artists.

These Outlaws Mixes are pretty great. Same thing as what Girl Talk is doing just these guys release it as one long track. they have a bunch out but I really like this one. The selections they make are pretty random and fun. Might be just what you are looking for man.

http://www.ilovetheoutlaws.com/Mixes/The_Outlaws-We_Won%27t_Stop_Partying_For_Anyone.mp3

here is where you can hear the other ones. they have them all at their site.

Also in case you havn't already heard em the Ratatat remixes are pretty awesome. Its not so much mash ups but same idea of taking verses from other songs and switching it up. Its also not quite as dancey. id start with volume 2.

http://www.ratatatmusic.com/news.html

If you like night ripper there are some pretty good mixes floating around somewhere that he does for his live shows. Might even find some of it on youtube if you look. The live stuff is great and its all similar to night ripper her just uses more recent songs. New album on the way too.

My friend recently got me into some mash up stuff too, that albums great.

If you like that you might like:
DJ Z-Trip: He's amazing live and he has a few albums.

DJ Cappel and Smitty: Blue Eyes Meets Bed Stuy: Notorious B.I.G. Vs Frank Sinatra
This is a mashup between the two artists mentioned and it is amazing how well the two mixed together.

Jay-Zeezer: The Black and Blue Album
This one also mashed really well. Much better than the Jay-Z Linkin Park collab

Danger Mouse: The Grey Album
I don't know why everyone loves to mix poo poo with Jay-Z but it works again, this time with the Beatles White Album.

If youre looking to get into some fun DJ and Producer stuff that isnt directly mash-ups you could also check out:

DJ Shadow: Most of his albums are great, I really like Preemptive Strike. He gets really intense so be prepared. He also has a great collaborative album with Dan the Automator of the Gorillaz called Bombay the Hard Way that uses a lot of Bollywood sound bites. Its bizarre and amusing while still being awesome because of the great producers.

Lemon Jelly: This band consists of two british producers. They have three albums last I checked. The first two are more about mixing and looping odd sounds like BBC clips and such and the third is much more beat oriented with a lot more funk and club influence.

You immediately need to get your hands on some Soulwax/2 Many DJs mixtapes, namely the "As Heard On Radio Soulwax" series (try Pt.2 for starters). It's exactly what you're looking for, although it skews slightly less top 40.

It seems Girl Talk's more predictable in his style, what with classic rock beats and modern rap lyrics. Soulwax is a shitload more eclectic and utterly fantastic for it.

Also nthing Jay-Zeezer, Kleptones and Dangermouse, I personally liked Dean Grey's "American Edit" as well as far as mash-up albums goes.

Agreed on all counts, as well as Party Ben's old Sixx Mixxes, and Soulwax, and Hood Internet, and everything else, too (if to a lesser degree), but if we're bringing up Dean Gray, why not address the second half of the duo?

Team 9 hasn't been exactly active in a few months, but he is definitely the backbone of Dean Gray. He's mostly doing his own stuff now, but if you dig around, you can find some pretty drat amazing tracks from a few years ago. I'd link his site, but it seems like it's busted at the moment.

In the meantime, how about a little Go Home Productions to brighten your day? He used to have every mash-up he ever did in 16 volumes of .zip files, but I guess he had them up long enough. Still, now he's got a quickie mash album up while he, too, works on some original material.

As mentioned, "Bad Apollo" was dynamite, highly recommended.

But, I finally got around to copping Ludachrist's Bangfest.
I actually broke out into a huge smile at "Dire Straight Bitches!".
I'm actually going in and breaking up the mix into its parts with Audacity.

Why?
One, I'm an obsessive like that, and I like being able to skip to specific jam section.
Two, this mix is loving dope enough to warrant the effort I'm putting into it.

If you even remotely like either Girl Talk or Tanner 4105, GET THIS drat THING.

I don't know too much about mash-ups either, but Diplo is pretty decent. And his I Like Turtles album reminds me of Girl Talk's Night Ripper with the recognizable pop and rock samples from 80's and 90's mixed up with 90's hip hop lyrics and basslines.

I adopted a highway.
It's a lot clubbier than Girl Talk, but if you're into mashup/party stuff you'll probably be into Emynd and Bo Bliz out of Philly. They do parties under the name White Tees and White Belts (and have a 12"er out under that name) that's pretty good. Also hot from Philly right now is DJ Sega, who put out a CD called Rockstars and Clubheads pretty recently -- the first half is okay to awful, the second half is great and totally worth price of admission.

Also Philly: Diplo was mentioned upthread, but he's got a bunch of buddies that he's been working with for years and years, and they've been putting out 12"s for years under the name Hollertronix (it was the name of their party in Philly for years and years). This is a great introduction to what's up and this series has some PHENOMENAL cuts on it. Some really lovely ones too, but some of them are borderline life changing (I'd recommend #1 and I think #4, for the mash of Gossip Folks by Missy Elliott over Rock the Casbah and the life-changing remix of Golddigger, both by Diplo I think). I wouldn't recommend Diplo's full mixes (other than maybe his Fabric Live disc) because they're weird South American funk -- it's good stuff but it's not in this kind of vein.

Flosstradamus out of Chicago are wizards at this craft and put on a hell of a live show. You can find remixes here and there -- my favorites are Act a Fool and whatever the Twista / Sigur Ros mash is called, I forget. They put out a phenomenal full length called Get Outta the Hood, tour pretty often, and still do parties in Chicago. They deserve to be WAY bigger than they are and if you're into this stuff I can almost guarantee you'll like it.

In NYC, the Rub are pretty top shelf and have been doing this for awhile. They've been doing a series of party medleys on 12"s for awhile and you can probably come up with them if you have a decent dance/DJ record store around you. One of the guys from the Rub, DJ Ayres, runs T&A Records with Tittsworth from Baltimore and they pretty consistently put out great poo poo.

In Baltimore people have been pounding on this kind of stuff for awhile and it's consistently turned out great. Bmore is like at the head of this kind of stuff right now. Supposedly Cex has a mixtape out that's mashup. The heavy hitters from Baltimore right now are probably Tittsworth and Dave Nada, and I'd also recommend Blaqstarr from this crew. Dave Nada (former member of DC hardcore bands Medic and De Nada) has a few GREAT mixes out for free on his website and his remix of that Soulja Boy song is a total must-hear.

Other labels you might want to check out: Mad Decent, Money Studies, T&A, whoever's been putting out Blaqstarr stuff lately.

Full Disclosure: this is all a lot more DJ/club kind of stuff than Girl Talk is. If you just want laptop beat fuckery, try Shitmat, which is Girl Talk at like double speed.
