Ape Agitator posted:The story that The Thing comes from was originally a pre-war short story, "Who goes there". That was adapted to a somewhat traditional 50s monster movie in 1951 as "The Thing from Another World". Its funny, I knew that The Thing and The Thing from Another World were almost nothing alike but I never realized just how close The Thing was to the original novella Who Goes There.

Oddly enough the first time I've heard that they're making a Time Traveler's Wife movie was in a gaming magazine that said it was supposed to come out in early June. Obviously that didn't happen and when I looked up the release date its marked for Christmas. Is there any reason for this delay or did the studios just think it will fare better as a holiday movie?

In The Matrix, what the hell is Neo supposed to be selling those people who show up at his apartment in the beginning of the movie? They treat it like its something illegal but it looks like he just gave them some minidiscs.

Diligent Deadite posted:When did movies first start to have huge cast and crew lists at the end? I imagine it's probably due to union requirements and it probably happened around the mid-1970s, but when I watch a film made before that on DVD, it's always really jarring when it goes THE END -BOOM- TITLE MENU! Most movies before a certain point had the all credits at the beginning of the movie. Which is extremely irritating to today's audiences trying to watch something and having to sit through a couple minutes of people's names. SubG posted:I think this is the first time I've ever heard anyone complain that the Matrix films didn't have more blank exposition. Ape Agitator posted:I think the specifics of what he's selling in that scene is completely irrelevant. It's just to paint him as some kind of illegal fringe dweller and deliver the white rabbit lead in and allow the Agent Smith interrogation to have substance regarding Anderson's second life. Saying what he's selling is hardly necessary for the scene to make sense. Its one of those little details that sticks out in a second viewing that just takes you out of the film. Sure in terms of moving the story forward it makes sense that he's just selling something that doesn't really matter.

Dr. Coffee posted:In A Scanner Darkly, did Agent Hank know Agent Fred was Bob the whole time or was it something they narrowed down from Bares ratting him out and Frek being put into a mental institution. And if the latter is correct, how could they rule out Ernie? Yes, they knew that Fred was Bob the entire time. They purposefully set him up to get hooked on Substance D because they knew that the only way to get someone into New Path without them being suspicious was for the person to be an actual complete wreck. They couldn't have someone who knew they were supposed to be infiltrating it because they might eventually give themselves away. Their hope was that he would eventually see something that would prove that New Path was behind the Substance D epidemic (which they suspected because it was the only place police "Scanners" weren't allowed to look) and his cop instincts would kick in and he could tell someone on the outside eventually. I never got the random girl changing into Donna thing though.

I've seen the movie multiple times and have read the book and nowhere do they say that the blonde chick is supposed to be Bob's ex-wife. In fact the end of the movie pretty much states that he never was married in the first place. It was all just a fabrication as part of his "Fred" persona.

But the more I think about it any reason I can come up with doesn't seem to make complete sense. I just wondered if there was an obvious reason I missed or it was supposed to be a little ambiguous I think the simplest answer is because they pissed him off. He was actually enjoying the whole chase and they had to ruin it by killing Bale after he had won.

I remember seeing a trailer for Monsters Inc that played before Harry Potter, mentioning the film was 'playing in a theater near you...like really near you...like right next door'. I cant find it on youtube, but Wikipedia proves Im not insane: That's pretty rare though, in fact that's the first time I've ever heard of them attaching a new trailer for a movie that's already out in theaters. Most of the time when you're at the movies and see a trailer for something that's already out its just because the movie you're watching has been playing for a while. A rare treat is when a movie has been delayed, they reuse an old trailer and miss a reference to when it was actually supposed to come out. I can't remember what movie it was but I saw a trailer once that had the wrong year at the end of it, they said it was supposed to be coming out the previous year but it still hadn't hit theaters yet.

He doesn't mind going to jail because he knows he's just going to break out as soon as he gets there not because he wants to turn over a new leaf. God you're just completely WRONG about all of his motivations aren't you? Ben Wade does NOT want to "change his life" he's a BAD MAN. He loves murdering and robbing people. You're falling in the exact same trap that Evans' son did in idolizing the man. Hell, the only reason he helped Evans out was because he felt sorry for the guy and it cost him NOTHING to do so. Either he would get sent to prison and break out or his gang would show up and free him. Either way he'd be free. The reason he killed his gang was because he was pissed off that Evans had actually won and they didn't recognize it. They weren't playing the same game he was and so in a fit of anger he murders them. That just goes to show how petty he was.

Is it going to be the same movie reshot with different actors in English or is it just a spin-off or what? Its a scene by scene remake. I'm a little wary because from what I've heard the director of [rec] pulled some fuckery with the cast by messing with their heads. As in he would tell them the wrong cues for when people would jump out to get better reactions. Which doesn't transfer at all when they're doing it shot for shot.

twistedmentat posted:What's with Cleopatra? I read a book all about big disaster films that ruined or almost ruined studios, and besides Heaven's Gate, it's considered the worst studio blunder. For the longest time it was the most expensive movie ever made and it was solely due to Elizabeth Taylor. It was originally only supposed to cost $2 million and ended up nearly breaking the bank at Fox for $44 million (in 1963 dollars.) They had to shut down production, scrap a ton of sets and then move the entire thing to Italy because she got sick early in filming. Then there was the whole Richard Burton scandal where they met on set and had a very public affair. So basically initial perceptions were pretty tainted toward the movie but it seems that people have mellowed toward it over time as some of the things became less important.

2xSlick posted:Here's a question that's been bothering me for over a decade. What was the point of the Live Fire Exercise from Men in Black? Was Will Smith supposed to shoot the alien targets? On the surface, it seems like such a basic test. Since everyone there was either Military or Police trained, I don't see anyone washing out if that was all it scored. It would make more sense if it was set up to be some sort of judgment call considering their job as peacekeepers and not alien exterminators. Rip Torn seemed so flabbergasted that someone didn't shoot the aliens on sight, considering that the job isn't to shoot aliens on sight. Were they that ticked off he shot the kid? And what's the deal with circus peanuts? They don't come from the circus and they're not nuts. The various tests to join were all designed to check outside the box thinking. Like the written test wasn't supposed to actually check how smart you were but if you were willing to move the table to complete the test. While the shooting gallery was to test observational skills to see if they'd just shoot any alien on sight.
