Castle of the Winds? It was a fairly simple roguelike for Windows that used icons as its graphical elements.

Keep in mind that there were many different versions of Math Blaster, so it might not have looked quite like that.

As far as the "solve math problems to open doors" gameplay goes, it might also have been OutNumbered - the setting was a mad-sciencey TV station. Listen to this - if a PC speaker version of the main theme is burned into your brain, you've played OutNumbered.
