Back in the mid-nineties I played a game on the MAC that was a sort of 2D space sim game, you viewed it top-down. You started out with a lovely ship which could haul a little bit of cargo and that was it. You jumped from planet to planet scraping together money for better ships and hopefully not getting killed by pirates.

Pirating was awesome too, but incredibly high risk.
