I'm thinking of a 3d platformer. Only thing I can remember is you could grab horizontal poles and swing on them, all the way around, doing loops around the pole, and launch yourself to the next platform by pressing a direction and hitting jump. But if you were swinging and decided to jump the other direction, you'd press in the opposite direction and the character would stop their swing at the top so they were basically doing a handstand on the pole, then switch their hand positions so their body turned to face the correct direction.

This feels like it has to be a prince of Persia game but I'm not sure

Seconding Tomb Raider. Sounds like it could be Legends?

a platformer(?) about an Italian-American plumber who steps on turtles/kappas and shoots fireballs if he eats flowers. it was mushroom themed, I think?

I dont remember much else about it other than I played it on the NES in late 1988 and it was a dual cart that also had the game Duck Hunt

I asked my buddy and he seems to recall playing something similar but it came with Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet? around 1990 or so

Dunno what the plumber and duck stuff is all about but this sounds like the Great Gianna Sisters to me
