It's neither HoMM or King's bounty - you directly controlled these guys and they didn't have armies. The combat took place on the map like an RTS, it wasn't in a separate screen. No bounties or anything really in HoMM or KB really either.
As I said - it's a bit like if you controlled the characters directly in Majesty.

I don't think you had a character that was "you" either, just ones you hired.

Could you be thinking of Hinterland?

I remember playing a game on...maybe Windows 95. It was sort of around the time I played Castle of the Winds. It was a lot like Advance Wars. You had a top down voew of a grid based map and had tanks and stuff.

Anyone know wtf this was

I actually think I know what game this is. It was called something like Combat Tactics or something. I can picture the cover art, which if I recall was some form of rocket artillery firing.

Could this be Fireteam 2200?

I'm trying to remember a weird old PC game, I can't remember a lot about it but it was isometric, you played a guy in a blue robe and he was fighting some kind of totalitarian regime with a golden ball? You could sneak around and explored a world map kind of RPG style.

That sounds like Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure. There's also a sequel, Little Big Adventure 2: Twinsen's Odyssey.

All I remember from it, was that it was an NES game, top-down, probably a strategy game. I think it took place in a desert? I seem to think it was a desert, because of all the yellow. I think it was turn-based. I seem to recall seeing things that I could identify were walls. Pretty sure it was on a grid. I think you could maybe identify rivers and bridges? Sort of maybe like a Fire Emblem kind of look. But it was very complex for little 6 or 7 year-old credburn. I don't think I ever even figured out how to play. But I really wish I could figure out what this game was, just so I could play it and find out what it was even about.

Maybe Desert Commander? It was pretty yellow-looking and turn-based.
