Our last thread was getting too long and the OP wasn't at all informative. So it's time for a new one.

What is RiffTrax?
RiffTrax are downloadable audio tracks that you play in sync with your DVDs. They are written and performed by Mike Nelson, former host and head writer of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

What is RiffTrax Presents?
RiffTrax Presents are like a regular rifftrax. The only thing missing is Mike. RiffTrax Presents features Matthew J. Elliot who while hasn't done a track with Mike, has done two on his own for RiffTrax Presents.

What about these "Shorts"? What're those?
Shorts are little bite size versions of Rifftrax. Usually spanning about ten or so minutes long, these are public domain videos that Mike and the gang have given the RiffTrax treatment. They only cost 99 cents and are already synched up! Wow!

Why do they cost different amounts?
There are different levels of RiffTrax pricing: RiffTrax starring Mike, Kevin and Bill are priced at $3.99. We also charge $3.99 for RiffTrax of longer-length films regardless of the number of people riffing them. RiffTrax of shorter length starring 2 people, such as Mike and a Guest Riffer, as well as solo Mike RiffTrax are priced at $2.99. And RiffTrax Classics, such as Plan 9 From Outer Space and Night of the Living Dead are priced at $1.99. Rifftrax for shorts may be as low as 99 cents.

If you like RiffTrax, check these out!

Cinematic Titanic - Joel Hodgson (the original host of Mystery Science Theater) is back in the riffing game. He's even brought a few of the original cast members including Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl. Cinematic Titanic takes the silhouette feature from MST3k and stick with it. Occasionally the movie will slow to a stop for a sketch and then the movie will resume playing. There's a lot more interaction with the screen this time around with a lot of sight gags. http://cinematictitanic.com/wpmu/

The Film Crew - The closest you'll get to a new MST3k. Film Crew features Mike, Bill, and Kevin as they give B movies a commentary track for their boss, Bob Honcho. Each episode follows the formula of MST3k. Opening segment-movie-sketch-movie-closer. There are four DVD's out now.

Important Sites
http://www.rifftrax.com - Their site, duh.

http://www.youtube.com/user/RiffTrax - You'll find samples and assorted other videos that they release here.

http://www.rifftraxdiy.com - Take Youtube videos and give 'em the RiffTrax treatment!

http://blog.rifftrax.com - Yup, a blog. But a blog written by the Rifftrax crew.

The Film Crew is actually a pre-Rifftrax venture and considering how much Rifftrax has taken off there won't be any more. It just took forever and a day to come out.

They are available for free on Hulu.com. Although you have to have an account for Hollywood After Dark because it involves strippers and Rue McClanahan from Golden Girls as a stripper and she strips.

And it is throughly gross :(

If your new and looking to just wet your feet, some of the highly recommended ones have been:

Transformers
Spider-Man
300
Matrix

Personally, I loved "I am Legend" and "Casino Royale"

I've seen several of these and 'The Star Wars Holiday Special' is by far my favorite. It's beyond bad to begin with, but the RiffTrax crew finds hidden nooks and crannies of badness to drag, kicking and screaming, into the light.

On a related note I just heard the audio track that Brad Neely did for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I thought it was pretty darn funny and since I don't know if it's been mentioned around these here parts I thought I would mention it.

He has only done one and it's free.

The Harry Potter riffs are amazing.
I cannot say how good those have been.

Besides that:
Star Wars
Aeon Flux
And I personally think the Batman and Robin one is good, largely because that movie is so terrible.

Rifftrax has been doing amazingly good work thus far, some of the best thus far being Transformers, Independence Day, Casino Royale, both Fantastic Fours, and Matrix Reloaded. The shorts are something I've yet to get around to, but I can't imagine them not being great as well.

drat I love Rifftrax. I have a group of buddies come by every week, and we almost always end up watching one. I've bought almost everything available on rifftrax.com...I can't stop.

Troll 2 is awesome, Matrix was great, and despite how much I hate Harry Potter those are some of the best riffs for some reason.

Warning to those who start the addiction: think about how it's going to look walking up to the counter with Glitter, Crossroads, Top Gun, and Cocktail. I think I'd rather be seen buying Lemon Party DVDs.

I actually own more of the shorts than anything else. I like that they come pre-synced and since they're shorter the jokes are usually tighter as well.

I own all the shorts and while all of them are good here are my recommendations for best:

"The Trouble with Women" kind of short at 6 minutes but utterly hilarious workplace short telling supervisors not to be so goddamn sexist.

"Skipper Learns a Lesson" mainly for the subject matter of the short which is RACIST DOG.

"Patriotism" Bob Crane talks to little kids about patriotism. Oh and just about everything is patriotic according to him.

"Drugs Are Like That" two inane kids blathering on and on about what drugs are like.

"One Got Fat" this is that classic short film about monkey bicycle safety.

"The Terrible Truth" the harrowing tale of drug use that shows how a woman can go from kind of plain to smoking hot through a handy heroin addiction.

"Act Your Age" Jim vandalizes a desk and gets a lesson from the world's creepiest principal.

Those are all good and also the Petaluma Chicken/Why doesn't Cathy eat breakfast? combo is excellent as well. The Petaluma Chicken in particular is just so absurd, I don't think it even needed a riff to be funny. It could have just been a track of them laughing because they have no idea what's going on and it still would have been pretty good.

I think they had filmed all of them pre-rifftrax though. When Rifftrax first came out I remember they were having the vote to see which filmcrew would be the first to be released.

I think barring some major shift in interest, film crew is pretty much done.

Right, but they were all filmed well before Rifftrax even started. There were just some issues that kept them from coming out for a while. There was a message from one of the guys when the DVDs were first made available saying how you shouldn't get excited because they were all like 2 years old at the time and Mike and the gang had moved on.

If I had to guess I'd say the whole Film Crew experience was what caused Mike to come up with Rifftrax. Its pretty much the same idea except without the live action story bits. Also Rifftrax neatly sidesteps any rights issues which have plagued every other riffing project.

I imagine there's going to be a lot of lovely, lovely entries, but I figure as long as the rifftrax people are listening to the content and deciding only to host the stuff they like, we could get some decent stuff out of this.

It's a pretty clever scheme, everyone wins. The fans making the tracks get to be internet famous, get to make a little money, and possibly get to meet Mike & Co. The rifftrax people get to sell content that they didn't have to spend any time or money producing. Good for them, I guess!

I mean no disrespect to the RiffTrax creators or anything but do they have any free tracks for movies people have heard of? I mean, I could watch the Film Crew version of the 'Wild Women of Wongo' but that would require me to watch 'Wild Women of Wongo', which I'm not going to do.

I'd much rather get a free RiffTrax-track of a movie I own to see if it's worth buying more in the future. If they don't have any free tracks at all, I think they are hurting their potential sales.

For example, I would buy just about anything Brad Neely creates because of Wizard People, Dear Reader. If WP,DR cost money, I most likely would not have heard it or even heard of Brad Neely.

Seriously, this and LOTR: Return of the King are ones I'm looking forward to the most, especially Revolutions.

Hands down, Star Wars Holiday Special is the best riff. You get the best of both worlds, because they riff on commercials as well as the lovely special itself- it felt the most like MST3K to me, aside from the shorts (which are also great, I'd recommend picking all of them up, they're too cheap not to).

It's 1973. Nearly dinner time. I'm 'aving 'oops.
While in general, I view iRiffs as a terrible idea (unless the RiffTrax payment system finds a way to penalize every stoned college freshman who decides to use his X-Box Live microphone to record a bunch of incoherent mumblings and fart noises over the audio track to 'Pulp Fiction'), I do think that a bunch of goons could probably cobble together scripts for some pretty funny riffs... especially if Lowtax and/or a few other highly-skilled goons were willing to lend their lovely speaking voices to the actual recording side of it.

Whad'ya think?

Personally, I'm itching to take on Hawk The Slayer (an absolutely terribly 80's sword and sorcery movie featuring Jack Palance and that guy who played Jack's dad on 'Lost') but I'd be willing to pitch in on just about anything, as long as it was properly cheesy to begin with (the original 'Troll,' perhaps?).
