gently caress, I'm sorry RiffTrax, I didn't mean to jinx your site in the other thread about the live show when I jokingly said "I hope they're back up by tomorrow". :(

Please come back up soon so I can give you some money and make amends. :)

e: Well, mostly. The forums are still down, but the files page is up.

Yes indeed, got in there and got the RT for Revenge of the Sith and Spider-Man, along with two shorts. It's only about :10bux:, what the hell, should help them pay for some new server hardware. :)

For those who like their intended RiffTrax movies in the MP4 format, I followed the basics laid forth in this guide, except that when it came time to mix the RiffTrax'ed audio back into the MP4 movie file, I substituted YAMB for the AVI-Mux Gui listed in the guide. Works like a charm. :)

"Your Chance to Live" (short wherein an apparent zombiefied Peter Weller espouses distrust of technology) is great.

Narrator: "Without electricity, there would be no electrical fires."

Name Your Favourite MST3k Episode & Rifftrax

For MST3K, this varies with the wind, but I always find myself returning to [b]Red Zone Cuba[/i]. It's one of the worst films they've ever done: incomprehensible, confusing, amateurism in every frame, with one of the most unappealing characters ever to grace the silver screen. But enough about Cherokee Jack.

Best quote:

Mike (as Coleman Francis): "For the sex shot, let's focus on me with my legs splayed, and my enormous package spread out."

For Rifftrax, it's probably tied between "Battlefield Earth", the Corbett/Murphy riffs of the two "Star Trek" fan films, and "Why Doesn't Cathy Eat Breakfast/Petaluma Chicken".

Favorite quotes: Every riff about kissing that blond guy ("Battlefield Earth"); the ripping on the guy playing Spock (the two ST fan films); and for "Petaluma Chicken":

(Yes, that is women doing jumping jacks in a giant frying pan.)

Mike: "Ah, I see they're following David Lynch's omelet recipe."
Kevin: "Was this legal? IS this legal?!?"

I believe in an interview that Joel said one of the reasons he decided to start up CT was because of the residuals from the DVD releases. I think he said something along the lines of, the checks kept getting bigger and he realized there was still an audience out there for this sort of thing.

Not sure how Mallon had tried to sink CT, but I believe he did dick around with The Film Crew (Mike, Kevin and Bill's first post-MST3K venture). If I recall correctly, they had been working on a deal with Rhino, but Mallon objected because he felt TFC was too similar to MST3K, and threatened to pull the deal they had. So they ended up releasing TFC episodes through Shout! Factory (which ironically is now the new home of MST3K DVDs).

My brother and I watched SCatICB as well, and during one of our many "What the gently caress was THAT? Rewind that!" moments, I commented that this is the "Manos" of Christmas movies.

See, as far as I'm concerned, "SatICB" is every bit as creepy, uncomfortable, sleazy and disturbing as "Manos". The whole "Thumbelina" section not only features implied pedophila (keep in mind, Thumbelina is constantly referred to as "a young girl", regardless of the age of the actress playing her), but also interspecies lust, kidnapping, and not one but TWO instances of the lead female being forced into an unwanted relationship (first Thumbelina is press-ganged as the potential bride for a frog, then later psychologically manipulated to marry an elderly mole).

I will grant that "Manos" is slightly more lucid when it comes to plot. Well, that and it doesn't feature a Santa Claus with poo poo-stained britches. :barf:

The thing is all that pedophilia and bestiality is from the original story (or, rather, it's us viewing the story with the most cynical and perverse intentions possible), so I can't really blame it on the film per se. Also don't forget the film was made when everyone under 35 was still referred to as young man/young woman.

The only MST3K film that's almost as completely incoherent as SatICB is Wild World of Batwoman. Hell, Monster A-Go-Go is more coherent, and that wasn't even a finished movie!

As I said in the TV IV MST3K thread, I'll concede the point of coherency because you're correct that "SatICB" is more along the lines of "Batwoman" in that both films strain the limits of human credulity.

I'll also agree that you're right on the "Thumbelina" points; for some reason those escaped me. I blame it on the resultant mental trauma of my seeing a Santa with poopy pants shaking hands with a giant rabbit who had eyes like a shark. Doll's eyes.

Before I even knew that while I was watching SCatICB I commented to my cousin, "I keep waiting for a porn movie to break out". Indeed the sets have a slapdash look about them and the actors seem to suck at everything relating to the performing arts, so you guess they just have to be good at sucking dick or something.

During the movie, I too generally lived in fear that at any moment, Thumbelina would end up coupling with whatever creature happened to be sharing the screen with her. The bit where the lady mole introduces Thumbelina to the male mole was about a hair away from being the usual "oh let's have a threesome" porn scene setup.

It's more like MST3K's "Boggy Creek II" but set in the 1970s. Which means it's hilariously bad but not a psilocybin-influenced fever dream like "Ice Cream Bunny" was.

An odd thing about Planet of the Dinosaurs is that one of the characters is designated as the "sexy" one but early in the movie they have another, better looking character who is unceremoniously killed off in the first 5 minutes.

They did that twice in the film. First with the blonde who deployed her flotation devices, then with the rear end in a top hat executive dude's brunette secretary who got her belly dance on.

Both of the legitimately hot ladies get killed by dinosaurs, yet the love child of Andrea Martin and Gene Shalit survives as the romantic interest for Slab Bulkhead.

Down And Out is great. It's a workplace safety video that was on one of their DVDs, and it's easily my favorite short, and it has my favorite line in all the shorts.

My personal faves:

Story of a Teenage Drug Addict - Like "Reefer Madness", but less hysterical (in every sense of the word). The riffing is great though, as Bill gets plenty of chances to bust out his Noo Yawk accent. And the phrase "We shattered the headboard" will haunt you forever.

Coffeehouse Rendezvous - Apparently in Wisconsin in the 1960s, there was an explosion of underground coffeehouses. Kids would even go to church to get their coffee fix! Features a guest appearance by Emo Conan O'Brien.

Your Chance to Live - Undead Dick Cavett hosts this 1970s treatise on the advantages of cultivating a healthy, active fear of "modern" technology.

Telephone For Help - Kids learn how to use the telephone to call the police, fire department, and/or Batman. One character is apparently named Choice Evidence. And you'll never forget the appearance by the Marble-Mouthed Cop of Culver City.

Don't Be a Bloody Idiot - I always enjoy it when the guys take on stuff from other countries, and this Australian wildnerness survival short doesn't disappoint. Features more usage of the word "bush" than every porn film ever made, combined.

Do you have a citation for this, because that sounds absurdly high for a show that looks like it was filmed in someone's garage.

Movie rights are expensive, and got prohibitively more so as time went on, when the rights holders to even the shittiest of movies realized they could make some dough just by letting guys in Minnesota make fun of their terrible films. There are probably some exceptions here and there (I believe the "Time Chasers" and "Hobgoblins" people let MST3K have the movies for cheap because they were desperate for exposure and/or fans of the show, for example), but for the most part, rights holders were more than willing to try and bend Best Brains and the networks over a barrel if they could squeeze a few extra bucks out of them for their crappy movies.

The moment a box flew across Whizzo's set, seemingly at random, while Kevin made a joke about how resignations on that show are rarely typewritten, was the moment I had to pause the video because that whole moment made me laugh so hard that I had tears running down my face.

I think I enjoyed the madness that was Whizzo a hell of a lot because it had that sort of low-budget, hokey local TV show charm that I grew up on (and that was a cornerstone of MST3K, of course).

Watched a bunch of RT shorts and the MST3K reunion show for NYE. It was great to see everyone on the stage, and I'd have to say my personal highlight was Frank and Trace doing the "More Dates For Kay" short (with the two shorts at the end featuring everyone riffing being a close second). The Mads haven't lost a step. :) I wonder if they're planning on releasing any videos of their own live show sometime soon?
