BisonDollah posted:Cheers guys. Any I should avoid? Inception isn't a bad riff but the actual film is really good and there's a lot of time they seem to be really struggling to find a joke. Twilight and New Moon are by far the best, the films are unbelievably hilarious and the in-jokes they build up ...line? are great. Eclipse is good too but I found it lacking by that point. But that might be because I marathon watched all three. And Birdemic is pretty much the funniest thing ever. Doubly so for the riffed version.

Payndz posted:I guess they're caught in a bit of a Catch-22 as popular blockbusters are likely to have more people buying the riffs, but those self-same movies actually limit what can be done with the format because they usually feature long action sequences. Thankfully, Twilight movies don't have that "action" problem. Just started on the Harry Potter riffs, and they're good but it really is hard not to think "I just wish Brad Neely had done Wizard People, Dear Readers for every film." Maybe they could get him as a guest riffer when they do Deathly Hallows... Also, The Happening is so bad I couldn't even make it through the riff in one sitting. Zooey Deschanel, you make the worst career choices. Stick to being an indie pop singer and That Quirky Girl (shut up, 500 Days of Summer is great).

OK, the Harry Potter riffs definitely get better with each installment. Bit of a rock start on the first two, I'd say, and it doesn't help that the movies are all so padded out with 20-40 minutes of "celebrating" and "additional dialogue". And Quidditch. God drat, gently caress Quidditch (and I say that as someone who didn't notice it being bad when I watched the un-riffed HP movies whenever they'd hit HBO).

Turns out it's kind of hard to make fun of a movie that's just really good. There were some halfway decent jokes but at the end of it I was just kind of like "...and they made a riff of this why, exactly?" Was it because they'd done The Dark Knight or...? I think The Prestige could have probably worked better, if they really want to attack the Nolan. On the other hand, Transformers 2. Wow. I had heard the legends speak of how absolutely terrible that film was, but I dared not venture near it lest I lose 2.5 hours of my life. And boy, was everyone right. There is no loving point to that goddamn film, at all, period. The riff made it bearable, but only just barely.

Just watched it, I think it's actually better than the Eclipse riff, though it does lose steam toward the end as a movie in which nothing happens turns into a movie where somehow even less is happening.

IUG posted:No surprises, but on Facebook Rifftrax just announced they will eventually riff The Avengers. Honestly, I'm not that big a fan of the "good movie riffs" (assuming Avengers is as decent as reviews are indicating). Like, the Memento riff had a few good jokes but mostly just kept distracting me from enjoying the film itself. The exception is the Harry Potter movies, which I enjoy well enough on their own (my daughter loves them, okay?) but the riffs just take them to the next level. I hope they do The Hunger Games though. Good flick, but lots of room for jokes.

The other night a bunch of us watched all the Twilight riffs (second time for me) and I stand by that they are collectively just about the best thing they've done. The first one is kind of the best, because it's the most legitimately terrible movie on its own, but Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 comes close and you can bet I'm excited as gently caress for Pt. 2, especially from what I've read about the film itself. Watched The Hunger Games riffed finally, didn't think it was that funny, another case of "movie isn't bad enough for a good riff", though not as bad as the Memento riff in that regard.

I think it's probably harder to write jokes for films like The Avengers or whatever because they're just not that inherently bad and don't have much in them that lends itself to being funny just because it exists. That's why the best feature riffs are the Harry Potter and Twilight series. The Potter films are actually pretty good, but the jokes practically write themselves when you have wizards playing wizard football and Alan Rickman being Alan Rickman. So I don't think it has anything to do with piracy, it's just that the feature riffs tend to be most popular when the movies are incredibly silly, and maybe there haven't been a lot of those lately? Who knows. All I know is Breaking Dawn 2: Obvious Subtitle Joke is easily one of the best riffs they've ever done. Bill constantly bringing up the actual lore about How Vampires Work was amazing, ripping on Emmett was amazing, the Jacob stuff was uh... yeah that was something all right. It's also a good movie to play "riff or script?" with lines like "Stupid wolfy thing!" and "Blink, breathe, slouch: got it". Also holy poo poo the "twist" at the end. I mean just holy poo poo. I can't believe a movie did that. And we got to see Alice feed Dakota Fanning's head to a wolf.

Dissapointed Owl posted:How can a huge franchise like Twilight have such terrible special effects? I thought the same thing, the vampire running effect will never not be terrible and hilarious. One more thing re:piracy - the VODs almost certainly get pirated more because nobody has to manually merge the Riff and the film. So I stand by my statement that as soon as Hollywood makes some more silly poo poo, we'll get some more super riffs. They've made jokes about The Hobbit in the last few riffs, I'm pretty sure they'll riff it. How could they not? And I seriously hope they weren't kidding about riffing the Fifty Shades of Grey film when it comes out, if only because: quote:American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis has also publicly expressed his desire to write the screenplay for the film.

Furthermore, When they show Renesmee all grown up and with Jacob in the flashforward at the end, is it just me or didn't she look basically exactly like a younger, prettier Stephenie Meyer? Did she Mary Sue herself into both Bella and Bella's daughter so she could be with Edward and Jacob in her crazy head? Oh God now that I've typed that out it's far too plausible to not be true. This rabbit hole doesn't have a bottom. I also liked how the end credits included people who hadn't appeared since the first or second film. If you cut that 20 minute credit sequence and merged Part 1 and 2, the movie would be just over 3 hours, making the "two movie" thing so much more of a blatant cash grab.

At this very moment, there is a studio executive in LA who has just railed a giant line of coke and is calling Stephenie Meyer to insist she bang out a Jacob/Renesmee trilogy so they can start filming already. You know it's coming. Best not to fight it. Robert Pattinson, having just been called about reprising his role as Jacob's stepfather, is sitting in a bathtub staring longingly at a straight razor.

I gave up long ago on trying to explain to people why Starship Troopers is almost literally a perfect film (for what it set out to accomplish).
