What should I know before going to the first dungeon in Onett in Earthbound?
You shouldn't have too much trouble, biggest danger are the black antoids that can call for help and the mice getting a lucky SMAAAAAAAAASH! attack on you (a trait all mice in the game seem to share). The attack slugs aren't a big deal, they come in big groups but barely do any damage.

There's a magic butterfly hanging about on the ledge where you have to exit and renenter the cave to continue, it will reset every time you enter the area, so you can use it to max out your HP and PP before the boss.

Edit: drat, beaten.

Chrono Trigger
- The Soda Guzzling game is a good way to build up a lot of Silver Points early, especially if you have a turbo controller. There's a man in a tent over by Lucca's sideshow that trades your Silver Points for Gil. You can use the Gil to buy a Lode Sword from Melchior before you visit Lucca's sideshow.
Killing Gato over and over again is so much more satisfying though.

I've got one to add for CT: Don't bother with triple techs, you can almost always do more damage in the same amount of time by sticking to double techs or single techs.

Beyond that, just make sure you kill every enemy in the zone before moving on to get the most stat ups and explore throughly, some of the stages (Mu espicially) are confusing as hell.
Don't worry too much about getting every single stat-up for killing all the monsters. When you beat the boss of a stage the game will give you all the ones you missed.

Enemies that drop glyphs only flash their glyphs for a second or so when they die if they don't drop it, you have to keep killing them until the glyph stays on the screen, then you can absorb it.

It'll still disappear if you wait too long though.
