You need:
- at least 1 decent weapon skill (sword, axe, mace) even if you're playing a mage
- a crafting skill (warrior-smithing, archer-tinkering, alchemy-mage)

that said, alchemy allows you to brew alcohol. And potions. Combine with fruits and you'll be swimming in hp/mana restoratives.

You smelt more bars per ore when you have higher crafting skill. If you're planning on maxing it, it might be worth waiting.

If you open a zoo and then leave the level before defeating it, it'll stop counting as a zoo :( And as far as zoos go, bolts of squid and throwing bottles are your friends.

Remember to write down new recipes you encounter, they can be made without knowing them.

You can reverse-dope your agents (slides to the left). This will slow down your speed and reactions, but allow you to drug them for longer later.

There's a panic button (forgot what it was) that sets all the drug sliders immediately to the max. Useful in emergencies.

Run silent and its derivatives are still useless. Fortify is kinda weak, better to grab the nukes/stops and use them as needed. Useful for exploration: lifting objects, high jump (get this ASAP), hacking 4 or 5, icarus landing, wall breaking.

Extremely useful:
- Rebreather
- EMP Shielding
- Typhoon System (You will understand why when you get to those parts)
- CASIE Social Aug

Other very nice ones include:
- See-through-walls
- Disable bots/turrets
- Double takedowns.

I'd have to disagree on some of them. CASIE is not that useful if you know what you're doing but looks awesome on your first playthrough, especially upgraded (IIRC the first level doesn't give you pheromones). Typhoon is VERY situational: I found it overpowered in 2-3 fights but otherwise is kinda meh (uses special ammunition). See-thru-walls is great but seems to lose its range later on (often you'll spot the enemy visually without the aug first, WTF); Disable bots/turrets depends on how much you want to hunt the passwords, besides even the heavy bots don't know what EMP shielding is. If you take cloaking, aim to upgrade to at least level 2, that gives you actual efficiency. Extra inv space is a MUST if you play packrat/sniper/heavy weapons guy. Hacking stealth is very good if you upgrade the hack level itself. Gas is avoidable (gas grenades are your friends) and EMP is again situational. You will have a few EMP grenades/mines explode on you but you can counter it with food if you want to.

(edit: Oh, I didn't comment on 2x takedowns. That's because I never use them. Silenced pistol/rifle neckshots all the way. also the reason why no one wants to play paintball with me)

VVV: Could be. I thought the first one got you personality analysis, and the next one the alpha/beta/omega aspect and pheromones. But I could be talking out of my rear end here.

There are no missables. Later in the game you can build a shop that sells items you might've "missed".

Weapon upgrades are not set in stone; you can return to the forge and switch them later, for free.

Also, it's a great idea to get the achievement building early on and do them. Also the weapon training grounds. Even for 2nd/3th place you get weapon upgrade bits.

Speaking of the training grounds, some are impossible to win with a basic weapon. If you're having problems, upgrade it.

Celerity is still awesome. Somewhere near the half(?) of the game you'll get a sword that sucks HP, it'll become your new best friend for the rest of the game. Also, Protean(?) if you can take it, claws are good in the beginning. I can't recommend endgame weapons without spoiling anything, so go with "there's no such thing like overkill".

If you're magically oriented, go with the path of fire. Or the optional path of darkness(?) book that you can get in a fairly obvious location.

And keep your Humanity reasonably high. Some dialogue options only affect humanity. Ending mechanic: There are 3 endings and if it's too low or too high (you can still lower it quite easily) you don't get to choose the good or evil ending, respectively.

I bought the XCOM pack from Steam when it was $4 a couple weeks ago. UFO Defense is a lot of fun but also frustrating. Any pro-tips on how to effectively plan resources early in the game? I read the Wiki, but it's kind of a long list of items that don't necessarily go in order. One thing it says is to get a Hyperwave Decoder as soon as possible, but it also detects ships that I can't get to or won't be able to bring down really early in the game.

I seem to tend to run myself out of money too quickly by hiring too many engineer/scientists, or I don't move fast enough and end up losing a ton of non-armored soldiers in enemy bases because I'm not pushing research and manufacturing fast enough.

Also, do I need to keep researching the same type of aliens (like once I've researched a Snakemen leader, is there any benefit to researching another one?)
Remember that when you hire a soldier/scientist/engineer, this is not a one-time payment, but the cost PER MONTH. Plan accordingly. You pay everyone at the end of the month, so if it's like 20th, delay hiring scientists/engineers until the 1st if you can.

You can start projects for valuable items (like UFO components or Mind Probes) with 0 scientists. IIRC this way you can sell all items of their kind and still research it when able.

Manufacture a lot of laser rifles (heavy lasers suck), ship them to secondary bases as defensive weapons. Getting stuck with 2 million clips and no guns (or vice versa) suck.

Tanks suck, get more rookies.

Hyperwave Decoder is indeed awesome, even if you can't down the larger UFOs like Battleships you will still learn their mission and can plan ahead for a new alien base or terror site.

Also, you can still attack Battleships or whatever. Depending on their mission/speed you can set the Skyranger to standoff and see if it lands. Of course, then you have to deal with its full crew and terror units.

DO NOT ignore terror sites, ever. If you absolutely have to, go there and take off immediately, you'll lose like half the points you'd lose for ignoring the mission.

It can be useful to research multiple specialists (Leaders, Medics, Navigators, Engineers) as they fill your Ufopedia with missions/ships/new alien races. Other than that, you'll have to research them eventually to free up place in the Alien Containment as it can hold like 10 aliens (don't remember if that's 10 creatures or 10 race/job types). Avoid taking Soldiers alive if you already have that species researched.

Learn to manufacture and sell. Laser Cannons are one of the best sources of income but they require research. Also, keep selling everything alien you're not planning to use in the immediate future. This includes plasma weapons, mind probes (a lot of money), UFO components, corpses, basically everything that takes precious precious space in your general stores. EXCEPTION: Do NOT sell Elerium unless you have like 4000 units. This is one resource you cannot reproduce and your best ships will use it for fuel.

If you discover an alien base you can keep it and raid supply UFOs landing nearby. They're excellent cash cows. Decoder comes in handy, you don't want to mistake a Battleship for a supply craft.

tl;dr: account for scientist/engineer pay drain, sell everything, make engineers work constantly on lucrative items and sell all excess.

About to have a run through of my GoG bought Ultima Underworld games. I have sort of dabbled with them before but I had the impression I was creating crap characters. Any hints?
Ah, Underworld. Stick with 1 melee weapon skill - for UU1 I'd recommend sword.
You can abuse Swimming - hold Shift, use step mode and forget about that skill.
Lockpick is useless, all doors can either be opened with a switch/key, bashed, or are impossible to open.
Repair is useless, you can repair things for cash.
Get a character with decent Strength - you want to be able to wear decent armor and still carry your gear.
I never found missile weapons useful, just make a mage and chuck magic missiles at them. (if you make a mage, you want Sheet Lightning. You'll know where to learn it. Also, carry a pickaxe on lower levels, in case you trap yourself).
When you level up, you'll get skill points which you spend by chanting an appropriate mantra at an ankh shrine. Note down any mantra you find. There are 2 special mantras that are not used for skills. The manual tells you the first 3 general mantras but they suck (random distribution), save your skill points and chant the specialized ones.
You want a lot of Attack and Defense (by which I mean: max them). Also mana if you can cast spells, and enough Casting to stop your spells fizzling/exploding in your face.
Learn to use different attacks - overhead is good for axe, horizontal swing for mace, stab for swords and daggers. They'll hit different heights too. Hold your attack until the green gem sparkles.
Carry a backup weapon for bashing doors. Be patient, it can take a while.
Also carry: bedroll, map, runebag, sacks (crates/coffers suck), lantern, leeches, bowl of soup, pickaxe. There are other important items but I won't spoil them.
You can make notes on the map. Use it, love it.

Wheee, one of my favorite games ever! Some counterpoints/clarifications:

quote:

Cheap spells are the best spells. Always get at least one Orb of Air and Orb of Life. This gives you access to Chain Lightning, one of the best offensive spells in the game (damages 4 units with a chance to stun for 1 round) and Summon Eagle, a very fast flying summon that can explore, loot one hex towns and can defeat one or even two level 1 units in a pinch.
Also Water 1 for Healing, though Life offers a weaker work-around.

quote:

Combat heroes benefit from round attack, first strike and wall climbing. Any remaining XP points are best used on increasing their stats and speed. Every hero should have some form of long range attack as well.
Take Life Stealing + Cold Strike at the beginning (you can't do this on further level-ups), trivialize the game. Then get First Strike, Parry and stats. Cold Strike freeze is the best incapacitation, this combined with Life Stealing will allow you to survive most attacks early and everything later on. Heroes are horribly broken in this game, I used one to beat 32 top-tier undead units in one fight.

quote:

Don't be afraid to loot or even raze towns if you already have a decent income. Keep the initiative, and keep your armies fighting instead of waiting around.
You can also rebuild towns/mines/farms/other structures if you have access to a Builders' Guild.

quote:

High level summoning spells are a waste of mana. For the price of one summoned dragon you can permanently haste three flying units as a deep strike force that covers twice the territory, or you can buff an entire army in preparation for a battle.
Bad example, dragons (and other fliers with ranged attack, like the Air Galley) are very strong - land armies without archers are completely defenseless against even a single frost drake.

I just finished Aquaria, so I'm leaving some non-spoilery advice for first-time players:

- Combined keyboard/mouse controls are key and will save you lots of stress. 1-0 keys are shortcuts for forms and shield/bind songs, keyboard navigation + mouse aiming is very good for boss fights, while mouse-only navigation is better for jumping off-wall (especially in a certain location, you'll know it when you get there).

- Explore, explore, explore. If you find an area/boss too hard, go elsewhere, get upgrades. The game is very lenient towards sequence-breaking and a few forms/upgrades are entirely optional, so search around.

- Big red bulbs are the only finite cooking ingredient, everything else can be found/farmed, so don't be afraid to experiment. Different kinds of meals have similar forms, so if you find a new recipe for one thing, try using the specified additive for other similar stuff. Poisonous meals are mostly useless, sealoaves aren't.

- The useless-looking charge attack of nature form is for launching yourself off a wall if you aim it where you're holding. Again, specific use but it will save you lots of stress.

- Don't be afraid to backtrack to a save crystal when low on health, you can die surprisingly easily.

- If you're having trouble with bosses, cooked stuff will help a lot. You want: healing (at least Heal 2), +defense, +speed, +energy shot, cure poison if applicable, all else is optional. Don't hoard stuff, you can get more and the maximum is 8 anyway.

- The Aquarian script is actually English with a different font. You can translate it yourself or replace it with a different file, I recommend it as the messages don't spoil anything but add more understanding of the game world. Original is gfx\aquarian.png, English (ugly) is aquarian_alt.png, here's a much prettier "bioluminescent" high-visibility Aquarian-looking English font.

- if you find a passage locked/blocked/that looks like it requires some future upgrade, mark it on your map! Similarly, mark good resource spots with a different color.

- there are secret passages (where you can go through walls). You can find them on the minimap (but not on the main map!). If you see suspicious passage that's not appearing on the main map nor the screen, poke around. Some secrets may require different mobility upgrades.

- some treasures are ornamental but some are actual upgrades for your home or your armor (in particular the jellyfish armor is awesome for exploration and slower boss fights).

- Don't stress in the final location, the last save crystal/transport point is right before the last boss so there's no point of no return.
