The game itself doesn't tutorialise them much more, but there's a bunch of good stuff in their wiki. I think the expectation is that like a lot of the game you'll tinker with them a little and then look outside the game once oyu get stuck. I found https://wiki.factorio.com/Tutorial:Circuit_network_cookbook a good place to start.
