Turrets will instantly destroy anything in a three block radius when they blow up, so if you put them right next to each other then your entire defensive line will be annihilated in about thirty seconds.

Don't be afraid to save scum when you first start out to learn the mechanics.

Dwarf Fortressing into a mountain as a starter base sounds like a good idea but in reality it takes forever to mine out rooms and when you finally do the whole place will be dark and filthy. Dirty rooms give a negative mood, if your whole base is dirty then people will go insane pretty fast.

When someone does go crazy you want to make sure you tell your remaining colonists to drop their weapons before taking down the madman, bruises will easily heal but cuts and bullet holes will not.

Make a colony with perimeter walls and only one entrance, at least for early game raids the enemies will only go for the entrance and you can funnel them in.

Don't ignore mad animals, even squirrels can gently caress someone up good.

Personal shields cannot be used with ranged weapons.

Make like Matt Damon and grow tons of potatoes as soon as you can, they are the most reliable source of food and won't spoil if they are in your freezer.

You're going to die eventually, don't stress about it. Raiders don't generally destroy colonies, heat waves do. You can make a masterpiece of a base and it will still get destroyed because all your food spoiled in the heat and everyone is getting heatstroke in their masterfully decorated rooms because it's 500 degrees F outside.

If you do have problems with your base being dark and filthy set your most annoying colonist up with only cleaning and hauling duties. Don't forget to also train some animals to haul. And if things are dark, put lights in.

Infestations are more of a long term thing, if you are just starting out then mood modifiers are more of the issue.

Aside from that, it pays to have three of whatever you choose in the same slot. You get bonuses for matching colors with the large mutagen; if you put two blues and one green on a blue mutagen then you are only going to get the bonus for the two blues.

The entrance to the mansion is an extremely heavily trafficked area and never spawns monsters, so it makes for the world's greatest storage box. Just dump all your stuff on the ground.

Don't play on Ironman for your first run through, that's crazy. Play for a bit so you can get a hang of the mechanics and flow of the game, then start over with Ironman.

Looking at the entry in the Wiki for Rimworld, it repeatedly lists turrets as a good defense in a kill box. This is a bit of a misconception, as while they are good defenses, the quality of enemy that you face depends on the "wealth" of your base, and turrets are ridiculously expensive. So by building them you get some bonus defense but you also get people with rocket launchers and other horrifying weapons way earlier than you can reasonably handle.

It's far better to stick to making a perforated square that your colonists can hide behind with sandbags in the gaps, which will not spike your wealth and will allow you to stay at basic enemies for longer.

Flashbangs are huge for early alien enemies with special abilities, because they hit in a massive area, drastically reduce their aim, and disable their special abilities for one turn. So if you flash them as soon as you see them then you can safely kill them off without worrying about getting wrapped.

The easiest races to start out with are Dwarves, Humans, and Vampire Counts in that order. Orks are strong, but due to their placement on the map they have to contend with the Dwarves, who are so heavily armored that they can usually just facetank you at base level. Chaos is very hard, it has the Horde mechanic tied to it and should be avoided til you get a good handle.

There are boss enemies that you cannot kill, or at least it's incredibly inefficient to do so, and the game doesn't do a great job of distinguishing them. If you can escape from a boss fight then that is probably what you have to do.

Don't sell too many of the bodies of the early soldiers, they are used in the construction of basic supplies and rarely show up later.

- Stealth is way more viable than in the first game and is your primary method of saving health and ammo. Use it as much as you can.

- Upgrade crit before you upgrade straight damage if you can. The pistol never stops being useful.

- Shooting the legs to drop an enemy then stomping them is often better than shooting them in the head, since a lot of enemies can take a second kill-shot to the head due to weird head worms

- It's actually pretty easy to ditch alerted enemies after they start chasing you if you can juke around corners. This becomes incredibly useful later on when you encounter stealth-killable enemies that take two stealth kills to go down.

In addition to above, Small non spoilery tips

* Try to map out the area when you first start and don't have much to do anyways. If you find that there are no portals on one side of the map then you are free to totally neglect defensive structures on that side.

* Try letting your horse eat grass.

* If your purse starts overflowing (and it will eventually) you can actually fit more "in" by piling them on top. The coins actually have physics modelling and you can make a pile on top of the bag.

Another game I would like tips for: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. played Human Revolution through twice.

Using the map is hugely important because the entire city is a rat's nest. The levels aren't as well designed as the previous one's, so don't feel bad if you have to break with your stealth run and just gun dudes down.

There aren't really any locked off areas once you are in a zone, so if you want to rob the bank immediately you can at least try it.

Also always get on the train car for non augmented people because it's funny.

More expensive units are much stronger but also have fewer men in the units and cost way more.

Other than that I would highly recommended watching some videos on how the combat works. It's not hard, there are just a lot of small things that can add up to you winning battles that you would have been decimated by. Small things up front:

don't wear your guys out by running everywhere, it's a huge hit to their combat effectiveness

90% of the time you won't actually kill an enemy, you will just break their morale and make them run. Encircling a unit until it breaks is far better than face tanking them until they lose enough men to run.

Swords beat Spears, spears beat cavalry. Generally all the massed infantry will have spears while samurai have swords, unlike others where it's more mixed.

A lot of that still is true, but want to especially point out the idea of keeping the total value of your fort down as much as you can. The size and quality of raiding parties is largely based on the raw value of the objects and structures that you have in your fort, and turrets are expensive as poo poo. Throw a bunch of turrets up and you will be fighting against chainguns and rocket launchers really quickly.

The best early game defense is to build a box where every other square is a wall. So wall-empty space-wall-empty space. If you position your dude behind one of those wall chunks he will use it for cover when shooting, lending huge bonuses for defense with barely any increase in value.

Not sure where you stand so I'll just put some general tips down

- You can mine metal with the transport rover, which is the easiest way to get metal at the start.
- Buildings inside domes are not shared between domes, ie if you have a casino in one it will not be used by people in the other. This is supposedly being changed in an upcoming patch.
- However, external buildings can be shared by domes as long as it is within the range of both of them.
- Structures can function outside of drones range, they will just not be maintained.
- The easiest way to transfer drones between hubs is to break them down with the menu in one and build them again with the other. This is free and instantaneous.
- The easiest way to move specialists is to ban them from all other domes with the dome's preference menu. Give them a thumbs down to ban.
- Colonists will produce babies like crazy until there are too many homeless people in the dome.
- There is no reason to have unspecialized colonists. There are buildings where being specialized is a detriment, but they are things like the grocers where it doesn't matter. Send everyone to college.
- Water is the least sustainable resource above all else. Save it where you can, because once its gone it's gone. The small water producers help, but you need a lot spread over a large space to help even one dome.

VVV if you want to pound through research then a Europe start is the way to go. You get cash for completed research, so you can outsource your research and make almost all it back in the research bonus cash.

One thing that turned me around a lot is the map system. The maps are entirely disconnected from each other except by the transport boats, so you want to pick one area totally clean before going to the next because there is no reason not to.

Correct. I don't believe that they do any more damage than the base ones in DS1/2, but getting free stuff in a survival horror game is usually unbalancing.

I would recommend that you don't even "buy" those items. The game heavily favors dropping ammo for guns that you currently own, so if you have a bunch in your bank you are going to get a bunch of stuff you can't/won't use.

Adding on, you can still get S ranks while killing everyone you see. As long as you are fast and don't take a lot of damage you will clear the score hurdle pretty well

One particular mission can be easily S ranked by hovering the chopper over a base, lighting it up with the minigun, and then leaving without even getting out.
