I'm about to start Rogue Galaxy for the PS2 if anyone has some tips they'd like to share.

- Once you get Toady, always feed it when you have two maxed out weapons (don't bother raising elemental stats, they never seemed to have any effect for me) - the result will be better than what you could probably buy at that time.

-Switch out your characters a lot, even though your standby characters receive experience, it's only at 2/3rds the main party. You'll want decently leveled characters for the final boss battles. Trust me.

-Also, if you haven't been leveling other characters weapons - don't sweat it, there's merchants right before the final bosses that sell the 2nd most powerful weapons for all characters, except for Jaster.

-The final boss battles loving suck rear end. If you lose on one part, even the final part, you get to do ALL of it over again. Have fun!

-One last thing - if you plan on doing the quarries, hang on to most of your extremely rare items, even if they can be used in a Revelation Flow, as most of the quarries require you to have such an item on hand. Also, most skills on the revelation flows are quite useless except for the buff skills and Illusion Sword (for Jaster.)

Well, this isn't my first time to play Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, but it's been a drat long time since I've played it (and I lost my 40+ hour save on it, goddamnit) - and I have one thing that's stopping me on any progress (I'm only back up to entering the Psych Ward or whatever it's called) - Persona choice, I know it plays a LOT into making the game easy/difficult (as I'm no stranger to the SMT games), as I'm one of those weirdos that has to have a decent outlook on what I have available, or my mind just freezes up and quits. So what should I be on the lookout for, Persona wise through the early game?

Crazy Achmed posted:

I've just started Final Fantasy 5 (SNES) and want to know how to not screw myself over via the job system. What are some good paths to take?

Right now, my party has just got the first load of crystals and I have them at job level 1:
Butz - knight
Lenna - blue mage
Galuf - monk
Faris - thief

...and I've just realised that I have no white mage. I'm going for a fairly balanced approach, but don't know which jobs complement each other.
I'm thinking of keeping Butz as a fighter of some sort, and maybe adding some token white skills like Cecil has in FF2/4.
Lenna will probably stay as a mage, but I haven't decided whether to add white, black, or something else. I like blue mage/enemy skill stuff, but so far I haven't learnt poo poo. How do I use this properly?
Galuf - I have no idea. Monk seemed cool at the time but I don't know what works well with it.
Faris - as above. Maybe an archer or some kind of oddball class?

I always get like this when so much choice is laid in front of me - I think it's related to RPG pack-rat syndrome where I have to force myself to use ethers and suchlike. Any help would be appreciated.

On my playthroughs of FF5, I've always tried to keep a balance of spellcasters/fighters in my party at the start - you can start mixing it up once you gain some skill levels with classes - which I've never kept a person on a job until they mastered it at the beginning, as it takes WAY too long (and it still does until you hit the final dungeon when stuff just bleeds AP). I always kept a person up to date on their white magic skill, as that was invaluable (even if I stuck it on a class like a monk or warrior), not so much on black/time/blue magic though, as I found out that the only time spell I really used was haste, and then quick once I bought it, and with blue, well, Mighty Guard. Black is useful in some fights (and absolutely required for one fight late in the game). All in all, it's pretty drat hard to gently caress yourself over in FF5. Also, Monk is one of the best damage dealing classes in the game, and once mastered, the base class gains the counter skill - which is drat useful.

Thanks for the tips - I didn't expect a reply so quickly. I started over with 3 Barbarians (2 Golems & 1 Troll), 2 Troll Fighters, 2 Priests and 1 Mage. It's so easy so far it's sickening. It also helps that I found an artifact shield in the goblin caves (which gives great bonuses to lawful characters - only problem is is that I don't have any lawful characters).

I'm getting back into Playstation 1 gaming for the first time in 7ish years. I've played a lot of the classics (SotN, Final Fantasy VII-IX, FFT, etc.) but what are some of the overlooked gems and what should I know about them? I've got Tales of Destiny, Suikoden 1 and 2, Tomba, and Alundra. What other games (preferably RPG, Adventure, or Platformer) should I be looking for?

You really should give Mega Man Legends 1 & 2, which are extremely fun third-person adventure/rpg/shooter games. They're not too long, but holy gently caress are they fun.

Also, you might want to check out MediEvil, one of the BEST action games on the PS1. Plenty of stuff to find & collect, which does get a bit tedious at times. It's also very very lighthearted. Just stay away from 2, which wasn't as good.

Edit: I completely forgot two more recommendations: Grandia and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (which despite being a sequel, really doesn't tie too much into 1). Both are among the best RPGs on the PS1. I found Grandia to be more fun than Lunar 2, but both have good characters and decent stories. Graphics-wise, Lunar 2's sprites have held up better than Grandia's mix of 2d and 3d.

Oh God, I've purchased Two Worlds! Advise me, Goons!

Abuse the gently caress out of the systems in the game.

For equipment, you can stack items that are the same - so if you have two short swords, you can stack them to make it into a stronger short sword. Statistical and damage bonuses carry over too. By abusing this, you can end up with a weapon that adds 20 to all stats and does over 10,000 damage a hit.

Alchemy is another system that you can abuse - there are many items in the game world that add to your stats permanently whenever made into a potion (by combining it with a regular health or mana potion), and the more of said item you add, the higher the bonus will be. Find a trainer that teaches you the alchemy skill and bump that up to 10, and then start making stat boosting potions - just don't mix in temporary boosters with permanent ones. It's not as broken as it was whenever the game first came out, but its still pretty goddamn broken.

If you still want to make the game easier - there's a water spell (I forgot the name of it) that allows you to freeze enemies in place. By doing that, they can't move nor attack, so you can just wail away at them. Traps also have the same effect, and once you get higher level traps + a high traps skill, many enemies won't be able to lay a finger on you.

Other than that, explore the game world and laugh at all the stupid, stupid dialog and one-liners.

Actually, I disagree with you on this. Even though he may have schematics you already do if you're play a tech character, he comes with some fantastic equipment. A charged axe, flow disruptor shield, and a leather jacket that grants him regeneration. Plus he knows how to really use the axe he comes with. Alien Shooter 1:

You'll eventually have enough money to buy everything you'll ever want. And if you somehow don't, they throw a bunch of upgrades/new weapons at you in later levels. Hell, I think you can go from base stats to maxed out in the last level just from drops.

Every weapon is useful except for the grenade launcher (too cumbersome in its aiming) and the freeze launcher (since it can't kill anything without having to use another weapon).

Other than that, just shoot poo poo.

Alien Shooter 2/Vengeance:

If you're playing the reloaded edition, go nuts and buy the most powerful weapon you can get your hands on. If you're not playing the reloaded edition, you'll want to focus on machine guns or shotguns, since they're on average, the best-scaling weapons in the game. Energy weapons and explosives are drat good, but they have some really bad middle-ground weapons.

Just mainly upgrade strength at level-ups, so you can have more slots to carry poo poo in.

Shoot EVERYTHING, including walls. There's so many secret areas in this game it's loving ridiculous. Even though a lot of them contain nothing of interest, a lot of them still hold enough cash to give you a leg up in the early game.

Saint's Row 2:

Do the side missions, mainly because you're required to to build up respect to do the main missions. But there's plenty of neat unlockables for completing each activity to level 6, mainly infinite ammo for each weapon type.

For the Insurance Fraud side mission, stick to the highways, you'll be able to rack up TONS of points there easily. Always aim for 18-wheelers.

In the Rampage side mission, fences and satchel charges are your best friends. If you don't have satchel charges, just use the RPG and aim for fences, they provide the quickest way to get a high combo, and more money. And if you aren't anywhere near fences, outdoor tables/chairs work just as well. Also, satchel charges can be detonated in mid-air, which usually does more damage.

Lastly, if the game doesn't run well, no, it isn't your computer that's making the game run that slow, it's just a lovely port.

I'm about to start playing Gothic 2: Gold. While I normally like playing games blind, I've heard this version of Gothic 2 is especially brutal compared to the first. What should I know?

Since this is your first time through, I'd suggest you join the militia, as you'll eventually gain access to healing spells that are far more powerful than any healing potion.

Be careful what you spend your LP on - the thinner you spread them amongst your stats/skills, the weaker and worse off you'll be. Personally, if I was playing a mercenary, I'd spend them on nothing but strength, then one/two-handed combat, then back to strength. For Paladins, the same thing, but once you reach a comfortable amount of strength/weapon skill, start pumping mana.

If you're going to go for any auxiliary skills, lock picking, basic animal skinning (and if you're playing a mercenary, you'll want to learn Take Dragon Scales and take Dragon Blood), and alchemy are the ones you'll want. Also, it only takes knowledge to create one potion type to learn the stat-raising potions, of which you'll want to learn the strength-raising variety, unless you're going for a dexterity build, which I highly suggest you DON'T do your first playthrough.

Avoid doing any sort of ranged combat. In vanilla, ranged combat was gold, as most enemies could be taken down from afar. THIS IS NOT THE CASE IN GOTHIC 2 GOLD. I learned this the hard way and ended up gimping my character by training my crossbow skill. The only way you'll do significant ranged damage is if you have really high strength/dexterity and a really good ranged weapon. Most of the time, you'll do a tiny bit of damage before whatever you're trying to kill closes the gap and starts whacking you.

If you're planning on going mercenary (which I also highly suggest you don't do on your first playthrough), be stingy, very stingy with your gold, as you'll need a whopping 32,000 of it to upgrade your armor in chapters 4 and 5.

Explore, explore, explore, and save before you do so. There's a lot of nice things to find in G2G, but good god are a lot of them brutally hard if you're not prepared.

I remember playing Divine Divinity a long time ago, but I still remember a few important things. For one, poison attacks are really good. Scorpion "traps" are also strong, and nigh invincible for a long time. If you use a bow, you can fire, pause immediately as the projectile appears, move/dodge, pause & target, attack again, etc., and basically discover the medieval Matrix. I played as a "survivor" (thief), so I don't know if this applies to all classes, but I remember the only difference in classes being the starting stats, unique ability, and appearance.

This guy is completely right about the Scorpion traps, they can take down endgame bosses if you deploy enough. Hell, I practically had to do that with one of them, so don't ever neglect the traps skill.

Also, get your charm skill up to 5 (no matter what class you play) so you can socket all your equipment, as silver/gold charms (which impart HUGE bonuses) start dropping like candy in the last quarter of the game.

It rises with the skills you get while leveling up. The in-game explanation is that tech and magic screw each other up if they're too close too each other. So if you go balls-out tech while leveling, then your NPC mage will fizzle at every spell he tries to cast.

The only time a mage's spell will fizzle is whenever it's cast on a high-tech character. Even then, if a character's tech aptitude isn't that high, you can still get away with healing them with spells.

I just posted this in the reccomend me a game thread but it's almost better here:

I apparantly own Gothic 1-4 after a drunk steam sale purchase. If I'm going to play one of them, which one is best/should I play first, and along with that, what should I know about whichever game you're going to tell me to play? I know absolutely nothing about the series other than that the games get compared to the Elder Scrolls games from a gameplay perspective.

I'd say start with Gothic 1 first and if you like it enough to finish it, move on to 2, then 3, but skip Forsaken Gods and ArcaniA unless you're craving more Gothic after 3.

Gothic 1 tips:

TO PICK UP ITEMS, TALK TO PEOPLE OR ATTACK, YOU HAVE TO HOLD DOWN CONTROL AND THE UP (OR W) KEY. That right there answers the one of the most frequently asked questions about Gothic 1.

You're weak at first, really, really weak, as in a strong gust of wind can kill your character weak. Because of that, I suggest you avoid any and all combat (unless you run into some juvenile scavengers) until you have a few levels, higher strength and a decent weapon.

Alternatively, there's a person who sells bows near the old camp (the big camp you'll find near where you're dumped at at the beginning.) If you can scrounge up the cost for a short bow + arrows (or be lucky enough to find one yourself) you can effectively weaken most low-end enemies to the point where they take 1-2 hits in melee.

In the Old Camp, there's 2 "escort" quests - do them. You won't be escorting anyone - they'll be escorting YOU. The people escorting you are nigh-invincible, strong and will kill anything that gets near them, but you'll get all the experience. Use the last fact to your advantage, as you can draw creatures to them and they'll kill them for you.

The entire game world is open at the start - the only thing preventing you from exploring is the fact that a lot of places are filled with enemies that can and will kill you at the beginning of the game. However, if you're sneaky enough, you can get by a lot of these and collect whatever loot they may be guarding.

After each chapter, new enemies will spawn in at certain locations, so if you clear out a cave of molerats in chapter 1, there may be lizards in that same cave come chapter 4.

Don't be afraid to use a lot of the plants you find - they'll be your main source of healing until you have enough for potions (or start finding them during your dungeon crawls) and they're EVERYWHERE.

As for myself - does anyone have any tips for Cross Edge? (Other than be prepared for an onslaught of PURE ANIME.)
