I am ready to pull the trigger on an 08 or 09 5-door wrx. My only problem making the decision is that I know I can get a hell of a deal if they have some 08's on the lot. Does the price justify the improvements or will I be able to use the money I saved on some upgrades? I am also in the VIP program so I get invoice no matter what.

You'd probably be spending a quite a bit to get upgrade the suspension and power to match/exceed the 2009. You'd also have to get an '08 premium to get all the aesthetic bits of the '09, and even then you'd still have that chrome strip on the back and the ugly grille.

I just bought the most stock WRX ever. It's an 2002 Bugeye Wagon, silver, 5MT, bone stock, 65,000 original miles. The guy I'm buying it off of is the 56 year old original owner with all records and maint history  Sooo, now I need a good up/downpipe for the 2.0, and a Cobb adjustable short shifter. Anyone want to buy a well maintained 99 Forester??

 That was the last AutoX I was at where I managed to pull out the win on both days on my 3rd or 4th run and win by hundreths of a second. I also got my nice blue fleece for being the 2007 STU champion in my region. I sadly don't have that many photos of my car. I've also owned a 01 Legacy GT which had far and away the weirdest audio setup I'd ever seen in a car. And I disagree with CT that the STI is by and large as waste of extra cash over the WRX for the record.

Yay! I just got notice that the rear koni inserts for my LGT shipped today! (I've had the fronts for a few weeks now) I may have to start the install this weekend... On another note, I saw a video recently on the difference between bellmouth downpipes and divorced wastegate downpipes and it wasn't really clear on when the divorced being better matters as far as power numbers... Is it always better or does it not matter until you're seeing big numbers?

Divorced is supposed to help with turbulence problems, but in the long run I believe the bellmouth design is more desirable. I've been told if you have any plans of going with a larger turbo in the future, go with a bellmouth downpipe, as it will flow better and the divorced ones usually won't fit a lot of popular aftermarket turbochargers. Longtime subaru owner checking in. Got my first '99 outback (bought it '98) with insurance money after a dude totaled my 1970 Datsun 510 and put me in the hospital with all sort of cartilage missing. This car introduced me to the wonder of the boxer engine and Subaru. It also in a roundabout way got me into Rally racing. I high centered this car on logs, drove it through creeks, autocrossed it, took out several deer, etc - and it never gave me a lick of trouble.  Then came my 2002 WRX, another great car.  Sold that and bought the car I wanted all along, a 2000 RS 2.5 in all the Sti regalia. As a great philosopher once said, "JDM YO".  Then I got a job across the country, so I upgrade to the 2008 TX sports. Drove to and from Maryland without so much of a hesitation to start on the first crank. All I want is the STi strut and spring package and some swaybars, and I'm golden. I should have sprung for an STi, but I had to go against my nature and be somewhat practical.

The invidia downpipe, for example, blocks the wastegate on the VF46 and some aftermarket turbos. While it is a very nice part, I would suggest a regular bellmouth invidia. The key points of a downpipe are the front flange, the cat, and the rear flange. Some have a nice cast bellmouth. This is key IMO and narrows your choices down to pretty much only invidia and cobb. Without a cast bellmouth you just have a piece of pipe on a flat flange (helix, hks), or a piece of pipe hammered out to meet the turbo flange (megan racing, other ebay crap). The flat flange reduces flow, and the hammered out pipe thing is garbage and will crack. Cobb and Invidia both make catted and catless downpipes, but the cobb meets up to a stock donut gasket where the invidia is a 3" flat flange. If you want it to meet up with the stock exhaust go with cobb, but a full three inch exhaust will gain at least 10whp over the neck down to 2.5. jamal fucked around with this message at 11:14 on Oct 7, 2008 |

I am looking at buying a 2006 Baja, it will go nice with my Brat. what gas mileage have you guys gotten with a 2006 baja (non-turbo)/outback/whatever automatic? the seller claims he has gotten almost 30mpg highway, but I feel he is exagerating. anything special I should check out on it, I test drove it and looked under the car and hood, found nothing out of the ordinary. (I know alot about the older subarus, not so much about the new ones) I know it is a hard question to ask on a two year old car, but are there any problem areas (like headgasgets on the older ones)? it only has 18,700 miles on it, and pretty much all of the extras. I was able to get him down to $19,700. another quick question, what is with the shift pattern on the automatic? I have never seen an automatic that is anything other than a straight line shift pattern.

The intention was to get an 01, then do a panel swap so it becomes an 06/07, then get a engine out of a front cut, which only works if I can find a cheap 01. Hell, it'll almost be cheaper to just get another 06 outright. That certainly has crossed my mind. Otherwise, see if Ralliart has the rally deal still going where you can get a race/rally only import EVO X with cage. I heard they are only 41K. At least it'll be half built as well. I'm a terrible horrible person and drove my '98 Outback into the grave by ignoring serious engine problems for 6+ months. With no garage (some things about living in the city do suck) and a dead, smoking engine, it was easier at the time just to sell the carcass. Winter's coming soon, though, and I'm gonna need a winter beater for Tahoe trips. How do Loyales stand up? Something like this seems ideal for mashing around in, and I wouldn't have to worry much about parking it on the street in the city. I just have an apartment now so I'm pretty limited for maintenance options, but I could always spend the weekend at my dad's house cranking on it if I needed to. Beater Loyale, or beater Legacy wagon?
