What's up with this awesome "ice flutes in space!" sounding thing in the beginning of the Champloo intro, which goes into a big sweeping background chord at 0:21 ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0RxZXbaL4w&feature=related

It sounds like a mixture of a flute mixed with an "ooh choir" noise and then turned into a chord. Could it be a sample?

It's probably possible to rebuild it but it's a pretty big undertaking, and I wonder what you'd want to do with the result.
Now that I listen to the first part of it again, it sounds like a vocal sample.

It's more around 3 minutes. The sound that I got certainly distorted, but it wasn't quite like the one in that track. I think I have to play around with delays and putting it back through another screamo. Thanks for your suggestion.
What about a pitch S+H LFO really fast, and really light? This can give that "buzzing insect" distortion.

Tycho's "Boards of Canada ripoff" bell sound. It's been driving me crazy.

The first thing you hear on his track "Cascade"
http://www.myspace.com/tycho

It sounds FM. I don't even care about all the EQing and tape warp. I just want the base. :(

edit: I can hear an octaved sine bell underneath the "saw-ish" part.

How can I get a heavy electro synth sound?

Perfect example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPHqf9qw-GU#t=1m14s

From what I hear, the synth is acting as the lead and the bass at once, then the drums and vocal effect in the background. But I can't seem to get one that sounds like that or close to it.

It sounds like it might be a heavily distorted or saturated crunchy square wave with the filter giving it that "weeoow" thing.

2:49 is the ORCHESTRA HIT, a 90's holy-poo poo-samplers favorite.
You can hear it around 00:19 in this youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEbXLXe5Yls

2:39 is either a sampled electric guitar or an extremely crunchy distorted synth.

I've got a couple of sounds I've never been able to do. How do I make really funky slap bass synth sounds like what kicks in at 1:07 in this song?

Is that FM synthesis? I've never used it before.

And how do you make really airy pads like what kicks in at 3:04 in this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwBsIE_V8aw

The first one is your standard 80's industrial FM bass. I don't know how to program FM because you need to do all these weird math tables so I would probably just find one in the presets. It's a pretty famous FM sound.

The second one sounds like pan pipes, either FM synthesized or sampled with a bunch of long reverb on them.

These guys: http://www.myspace.com/groupet

They are awesome, their last album is a tribute to Front 242 and they manage to get that old school EBM sound updated. I'm not that much of a fan of those bands supposedly doing old school EBM like Spetsnaz and stuff like that, to me they don't sound like the real stuff, but these guys nail it.

I'd like tips on how to get the sound of their bass on "Free fire zone" and specially for Strange days, specifically the bass that kicks around 0:15 (it's loving Nitzerian).

for "Free Fire Zone", a square wave with a short enveloped low pass filter on it, with a chorus giving it that "blue man group" tube/straw sound?

Strange Days has pretty much the same thing except they added in some extra pulse wave or something.

So a friend of mine were trying to figure out this song. It's on a Beatles album called Love and you can hear it on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aLiCZrt85Q from 1:12 to about 1:23. Its the weird sound on the right channel.

it almost sounds like a pitched up sample and they dicked around with the volume knob or something to dip the volume right after they plucked the string.

Check out this jazzy tune and please, for the love of god, tell me what kickass instrument makes that whiny high-pitched sound and while you're at it tell me how to recreate that sound and the vibrato in a decent manner.

pretty sure it's a high-pitched saw wave from a synth, lowpass filtered a little bit to cut out the synthetic-sounding highs. It's pretty drat expressive though so I assume it was played by an expert keyboardist with expression wheels and aftertouch and all that good poo poo.

OK another "general artist" one, but how does Ulrich Schnauss get his sound? I'm specifically talking about the effect that he uses on just about all his stuff, where everything's just smeared across the track. It's not a reverb effect that I can tell, it's like... horizontal motion blur, in sound form.

It still sounds like just a shitload of reverb and delay. He has his synths pitch-bending to sound like an old warped VHS tape. That's about it.

Just turn the reverb length all the way up and start cramming stuff in there. That's what Panda Bear does.
