The sv650 is a pretty popular bike.... And that's why I just bought one! I know there are a couple other user on the forums that enjoy these bikes as track bikes, first bikes, and daily drivers. I just purchased a 2001 sv650. 23,000 miles. Bought it for$ 2100! It needs new tires, fork seal... Nothig too horribly major I know the sv is very customizable and I'd like to see what other going goon goons are doing with theirs. I'll post pics as soon as their is daylight. What if we all post what year sv650 we have. Then I can update the first post and we can have an ongoing listing of who has what! Since I'm a new rider, I had the local expert motorcycle guru come take a look at the bike before I bought it. Here's why I got it for 2100... quote:the bad: I think I'm looking at around 500-800 bucks to fix it all.

So, here's a question for the experts. I noticed a lot of people mod the poo poo out of their SV. That's awesome. Since I have the following list of problems, should I buy "stock" replacements or go for something better. I'm a complete cycle newb so I don't even know wher to shop or how to spec everything out. Any help? quote:broken clutch lever Basically. Where do I find better/stock mirrors, turn signals, tires, and seats?

OMG. I just bought my first bike ever!!! Can't wait till I have enough Money to do the msf course and buy some gear. It'll be a couple months at this rate. Thank god in west Texas if it isn't 70 degrees I just have to wait a few hours for it to change!

Well, since buying the sv650, I've signed up for the MSF class this weekend! Now I'm going to go take some time today to try on some helmet and see how I like them! The guy who is housing my bike is going away this weekend. Do you think it'd be okay to leave it with me so that after the MSF I can use it to putter around a parking lot? It is my bike after all:D Captain Apollo fucked around with this message at 19:03 on Nov 20, 2008 |

Anybody think 120/70 17 tires would be a bad choice in the front? Is maxxis a good brand? What size should I look at for the rear tire? Any good brands for the SV to use?

And 160/60 for the rear, right?

Well I did some maintenance to my new(to me) sv650 tonight. Bought a Maxxis 120/70 17 front wheel and put it on today. I think it'll work just fine. Originally I was quoted at 150 bucks for the front tire. Then I called and bitched and it went down to 99.95 instantly! Haha! http://www.amazon.com/Suzuki-Katana-SV650-CARBON-LEVERS/dp/B0013L1BMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1226884132&sr=8-1 Just ordered the last set of those levers. Hopefully the carbon fiber works/looks cool. My clutch lever is all sorts of gay currently. I need a new clutch adjuster. Mine is completely broken. That's probably my next immediate fix. My kickstand lets the bike go SO FAR OVER. It is seriously the learning tower of sv650. Everytime I get off the bike I feel like it's going to tip over. Gotta figure out whats making it do that. Lots of little small things to figure out, but they're easily handled projects Putting a new back tire on Friday!

Well, today I went to get my bike for the first time in my own truck and have it in my own possession. It was previously in somebody elses shop. I've never ridden it. Today I loaded it up into my truck and drove 30 miles towards my house when I stopped and got gas. After I filled the bike up(2.2 gallons?!?) I promptly broke the ignition key off into the gas tank. What a loving horrible day. But it gives me time to get a new back tire on, new clutch levers, and the new straight gear shifter on before I really do any riding. Yuck, I was really looking forward to riding on this holiday break!

Okay I'm just about ready to pull my hair out. Tonight I FINALLY GET IT HOME. I have two new brand new keys. The locksmith pulled the key out and made two copies. I get it home tonight and the bike refuses to turn over. I tried several times to start it, eventually making the start barely even click. I checkd everything damnit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sigh. I'm really starting to think this sv is haunted. I guess tomorrow I'm grabbing a battery tender and learning how to charge up a bike(never done it before) I'm sure I'll find out I need a center stand or something else I don't have. Ideas?

Right on. I've been charging it since about 8:30 this morning. Seat removal was fun and easy How long do I let this bad boy charge before I try starting it again? And lets do a startup checklist for my newb self. got it running! Won't stay running though. If I let the throttle close or let the rpms drop while shifting it stalls. Where's the idle screw on a 1st ten sv?
|
# ¿ Nov 30, 2008 20:19 |
|
Cool. Is that black screw cased in a plastic housing? I didn't think it would be that one because its so easily flexible. I'll give her a try later. After running around for an hour today, stalling at low rpms, I tried to start her up after about a 3 hour rest. She barely starts, after a couple unsuccessful tries. Then when she does start and I try to put her in first, the engine grabs and the clutch seems to engage even though I'm holding it all the way down. Then it stalls out completely. I'm kinda hoping I didn't get really screwed on this bike. I'm sure I just need to clean the carbs or blah blah blah but I'd really just like to start riding. Minor projects are awesome, but only when I know what to do/how to figure it out! Can anybody help me diagnose my bike?

well I got the idle up to par. Now I have a new set of problems. Sometimes when I start the bike and put it In gear, the gears grind when putting it in first and will sometimes jp or stall the bike. I'll be holding the clutch IN the hole time. When I shut off the bike should I put it in neutral before I hit the killswitch? I seem to think my clutch isnt fully engaging. Randomly the bike will sometimes rev to 8000 rpm even when Im completely off the throttle. I ran a stop sign because the bike all of a sudden hit 8000 rpm in first gear. Rolling on he throttle and letting off cures it but it's still scary. And finally, sometimes the engine towards the front of the bike makes a loud pop. Can happen once or twice every minute or so and then doesn't happen until maybe the next time I run the bike. What's up with my haunted sv?
|
# ¿ Dec 3, 2008 06:18 |

and yes I'm able to faithfully start it in the cold using choke. I seem to think the idle screw was set to 0 or something and prevented faithful starts. Or I could just be a newb and I love this thread!

decided tonight I'm running on one cylinder! Then the other one kicks in and that's when I soil my pants. I always wondered why people made a big deal about 70hp. Now I'm afraid to run on 2 cylinders!!!

I think as long as the bike is consistent then I won't be afraid. Howwcer when I get used to the bike a certain way, and then all of a sudden I get a burst of speed, it throws me off guard.

Got the sv325 running on two cylinders again! However now it only has one problem. When riding around for a bit, choke off of course, I come to a complete stop at the stop sign. Even when I stop at the light for 10-20 seconds the idle speed of the bike is still 3000 rpm. It takes it a very long time for it to work itself down from there. But once it starts to drop it immediately drops to around 1,200rpm. Is this normal?

Well back to the sv650s thread! I bought these today off a referral from an svrider.com poster. He says they're crap at high speeds, but so are my stockers and I just need a replacement set anyway. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/suzu...06153QQtcZphoto Also bought a set of Vortex Gas Cap and Base. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330305359120&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&viewitem= Up next are............. 1) New Rear tire (Power Pilots) 2) Zero Gravity or PUIG Double Bubble Wind Screen (opinions??) 3) Fender Eliminator and Tail Lights - Motrax has a good little license plate bracket with holes for turn signals, might grab that for $20 4) New Fork Seals 5) Motosliders Captain Apollo fucked around with this message at 03:50 on Feb 11, 2009 |

Well, to answer the gas cap question: Earlier in the thread, right when I bought my bike, my gas cap SEIZED my key with its ALMIGHTY GRIPS OF LOCKITUDE and thoroughly snapped the key off. Fast forward to last week, the gas cap, again, seized my key and I almost had it broken off, AGAIN. Has anybody looked at the vortex sliders? They come with a "base" and a "top" or puck or whatever. The top is replaceable so you don't have to order the whole set, just the top. Maybe it's overkill? Can anybody really tell me what double bubbles are supposed to do? Are they the intermediates between sport touring screens and stock?

Sitting in at 6'2" here... I guess I really need to find a friend that has a DB and check it out. I think the touring screens just look awful on the svs...but maybe they're worth it if I want to go 500 miles or more?

Swear to christ, whenever I stop having so many god damned problems with my sv I'm going to be a happy man. Latest failure, front spark plug grounds out while I'm doing 60 down a highway. I understand that it's drizzly outside, but I sware to god how big is that sparkplug drain hole that enough water gets in there to TAKE OUT AN ENTIRE CYLINDER. Yuck. On the other hand, whenever my key isn't getting stuck, my pivot bolt isn't being completely torn up requiring a new tap for the bolt, my engine not starting after sitting in 65 degree weather.....I absolutely love it. I can't help but think that I want to grab an 04 sv650 or something like that with fuel injection to stop all this stupid carburetor/sparkplug bullshit. All in all, I love my bike. I wouldn't have so many problems if it hadn't been abused by a previous owner.
