it's also called a symbolic link, the functionality is very robust on the mac.

Technically, symbolic links and aliases are different. Should work with either though.

Can anyone tell me why this happens? As far as I can tell the tags are all exactly the same for artist, album, album artist, etc. I have a couple albums like this where everything seems identical, yet it separates them.

Make sure neither has the "Album Artist" tag set.

Oh no, malware will be added to my iTunes Library.

WTF?

"iTunes server" in this case is probably a DAAP server.

Honestly, I hadn't either... it sounded too good to be true, but it works flawlessly on Mac iTunes client, but not on my Windows... and I wouldn't be able to sync to iDevices anyway. Some individuals have written that it is possible to enable Home Sharing to sync between the Server and iDevices, but I haven't been successful.

The only bits of information I can find on the iTunes server are here, here, and here. Even with that, I can't figure out what kind of server it is, only that it's basically coded by/for Synology only... I guess I'll just have to stick with a Windows iTunes setup for now...

Yep, it's just a DAAP server. The protocol only allows for streaming over the LAN, not actual file transfer or device syncing. It's really the old style of iTunes sharing.

The new thing, Home Sharing, is tied to your AppleID and as far as I can tell, no one has completely reverse engineered. I would love it if someone did because streaming movies off my home Linux server's huge storage array to the AppleTV would be boss, but nope.

I've heard from numerous sources that the reason for the renaming of files and the F##/ filesystem structure on an iPod's music is an engineering decision for speed and indexing, nothing to do with copyright.
