I watched Skinned Alive (aka "Eat Your Heart Out") last night. My god, what a laughably bad movie. Lots of tits though so 13 year-old me was stoked.

Yes. Recently watched Asylum and Tooth Fairy. Both are your standard level of B movie suck.

Tooth Fairy has some entertaining kills and standard inept police.

Asylum is repetitive and you forget which scene you are watching when the villain is on screen. It actually had a good concept but just falls on it's face.

So, I just got done watching Magic Magic. Can someone give me their take on it so maybe it'll make some more sense?

I take Magic Magic as essentially a companion piece to Take Shelter. Take Shelter is the story of a man who has a good but simple life and his emerging schizophrenia manages to almost destroy everything he has but he manages to get through with the help of a loving family. It's schizophrenia emerging in ideal conditions but things are still a struggle and it's hard for him to live his life and keep his friends.

Magic Magic is a worst case scenario. It's schizophrenia emerging in a girl who is surrounded by lovely, self centered people that don't really like her and she doesn't like them. It doesn't help that the girl isn't a great person either. Every thing kind of lines up for things to go as badly as possible as quickly as possible. The people around her just take her sickness as her being a weird girl and this encourages them further tease her and play into her delusions. The girl starts out really shy and insular, so when things start happening that no one else is acknowledging, in her mind it's like she's trapped in a horror film and all these people actually are against her and are tormenting her. This all builds to a head until she gets to a really dangerous point and finally some adults enter the picture. However, rather than the adults taking control of the situation, they also misinterpret what's going on and literally try and cure her with magic, which does not go well at all.

I like this interpretation better than my own I believe.
I was looking at it as a story of peer pressure and acceptance. Alicia feels outside of the group and excluded because she can't speak Spanish. She's treated like a burden for the most part. Then there's the hypnosis angle, the group attempting to control Alicia. When they all go to jump off the rocks you can hear one of the characters say "you'll be one of us". So in the end I imagined her perceived death as a metaphor for not conforming and becoming permanently separate from the group.

I did watch this back to back with Suspiria so I could have still been reeling from that soundtrack in headphones.

Move out of the way Paranormal Activity, the next big franchise is here.

My friends got me a Night of the Demons and Motel Hell as gifts and I love the way they look on the shelf. I got a copy of Body Bags to go with them and I'm resisting the the urge to get even more. So pretty though...

I checked out Holidays the other night and didn't see much talk about it in here. Definitely a mixed bag as many anthologies are, but for the most part it was fun. A few of the segments did nothing for me, some were gloriously insane but didn't make much sense, and Kevin Smith's was funny but really had nothing to do with Halloween. But the far and away standout for me was Father's Day. I haven't seen much interpretation of it anywhere, but it really stayed with me. I loved the slow burning tension and how much they did with relatively little. I definitely have to pay attention to both the director/writer and the lead actress now.

I generally hated this movie and thought Kevin Smith's segment was pretty juvenile, but I guess what do you expect. But I agree with loving Father's Day. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Thats why I love anthology films, you can usually take something away from them that was good.

Also in the same vein and subject of hard to get DVD releases. I really wish Tales from the Hood would get a new release.

Part IV makes me really nostalgic. Monsterfest got me into horror movies many years ago and they seemed to always have the rights to it. I hate that they've gradually shortened their marathon down to like a week in favor of running all of The Walking Dead.
