Saw The Kill List last night while doing chores, so I probably missed a lot of details. Why did the targets thank the hitmen? Did I totally miss something, or is this up to interpretation?

Just watched The Clovehitch Killer and it was especially relatable having grown up in a small religious town. So much of it feels like a criticism of heartland morality on top of being about a serial killer.
