Goddamn Netflix Instant Watch can be hit or miss when blind watching a movie. Me and my roommate finish watching Warlock (AWESOME 80s movie about a warlock from the 16th century traveling to modern times to look for Satan's bible which has the name of God that, if spoken backwards aloud, will undo creation and the witch hunter who is after him). Great movie which I've seen a million billion times (the scene with the gypsy still weirds me out) and my roommate never seen it, and he enjoyed it.

Then we watch Zombie Death House which I've never seen, but it's directed by John Saxon and it's called motherfucking ZOMBIE DEATH HOUSE, how can it not be anything but awesome?

Here's exactly how it can be anything but awesome.

No zombies in the first half hour of the movie.

Ugly as poo poo lead actor who, surprise! Can't act!

When the zombies do show up, they're about as useless as a crappy as the ones from Nightmare City or Hell of the Living Dead.

John Saxon's barely in it (maybe he was too busy directing... no wait, the directing is ABSOLUTELY poo poo. Maybe he was too busy doing blow or whatever).

The story itself is a guy who drives for this mob boss is framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison where John Saxon is creating super soldiers which end up becoming zombies and killing everyone. Easy enough, yes? Well, the first half hour of the movie is about nothing but these mob guys which has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE MOVIE once it moves to the prison story. Then zombies wreck poo poo up, kinda (they never really show the all-out zombie takeover, it's pretty much implied by empty corridors and crappy actors pretending to be scared about zombies). Then the solution to the zombie plague is even more retarded let's drink this antidote that I have in my lab which I completely forgot about! It's just godawful.

Now I know why I've never seen or heard about this movie before.

October's coming up and the theater's in the area are putting up their lineups for their Dusk til Dawn horror movie marathons!

Los Angeles, CA

New Beverly Cinema- Oct. 9th
Featuring Dario Argento's Tenebrae (1982), Lucio Fulci's The Gates of Hell (1980), The Evil (1978), The Giant Claw (1957), Breeders (1986), The Outing (1987) plus a secret movie (?!), vintage trailers & other surprises!

I'd go for Tenebrae and Gates of Hell, but the other movies are just whatever. I wonder what the secret movie is, last year I think it was Story of Ricky (although that may have been the secret movie for the Edgar Wright Filmfest).

They're also showing a couple other great double features leading up to, and past, the marathon, including

Sept. 29/30
Best Worst Movie/Troll 2 (Best Worst Movie is the doc about Troll 2)

Oct. 19
The Clonus Horror/Clones

Oct. 20/21
Orphan/Seed of Chucky

Oct. 29/30
Trick R Treat/Halloween 3

Plus a poo poo load of other movies. Full calender is here.
http://newbevcinema.com/calendar.cfm

The Aero Theater- Oct. 30th

7:30 PM 5th Annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon: Fright Night, Don't Look In The Basement, Candyman, Bloody Birthday, Phantasm and Cemetary Man

This one looks a lot more fun, but what a terrible day to have it on. If Candyman, Fright Night and Cemetary Man are later shows, I'll probably hit those up after I'm good and loaded.

The Silent Movie Theater's not doing any marathons, but they are screening a poo poo load of great horror movies throughout the month including

Oct. 1st
Christine/Carrie

Oct. 3rd
Pet Semetary/Pet Semetary 2

Oct. 7th
Deep Red/Opera (Argento baby!)

Oct. 15th
House of the Devil/Dead Alive

Oct. 16th
BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL :mmmhmm:

Full schedule for the Silent Movie theater is here.
http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/index.html

The Egyptian's full Oct. schedule hasn't been put up yet, but they just finished a mini-Carpenter fest (They Live, Big Trouble, Thing and Halloween).

The Fairfax Theater is closed down, so no fun there anymore. :(

And even though I don't live there anymore, the Music Box in Chicago put up their horror marathon schedule as well
http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/collections/music-box-massacre-6/

Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney Sr. accompanied by Dennis Scott at the Music Box Organ)
The Raven (Boris Karloff & Bela Lugosi)
The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.)
Psycho (50th Anniversary!)
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (with the Chiodo Brothers in Person!)
Rabid (David Cronenberg)
Pet Sematary
The Funhouse (Tobe Hooper)
Theater of Blood (Vincent Price)
The House By The Cemetery (Lucio Fulci)
Fright Night (80’s Awesomeness!)

Looks pretty fun! Anyone else doing anything like this or know of anything like it in your area?

Black Devil Doll is so loving god-awful, the only reason I'm going to go see it is to make my roommate watch it (he's never seen it before). I own an old used VHS copy of it, but the problem with that is it's so bad, I know if we watch it at the house, he'll just turn it off, or play with his iphone or whatever, but being trapped in a theater with it being projected on a 50-foot screen..... yes.

I loved Deer Woman. The bit where the cop imagines all the different scenarios was epically brilliant. It was helped somewhat in my mind by the fact that I live in Oklahoma and am a Native American; I know people who actually believe in the Deer Woman - I know one dude who says he saw her once. So, it was great to get an hour of pretty great television about something that feels that close to me.

The best part about Deer Woman was that it was directed by John Landis and he was able to sneak an American Werewolf in London reference in one of the scenes.

loving Ving Rhames, I was flipping through Netflix and noticed Rhames is in yet another zombie movie, Zombie Apocalypse, made by Asylum Films (yes, THAT Asylum). Despite the terrible effects and worse acting, it's actually pretty enjoyable for what it is, and some of the dialogue and sequences are a little too clever for an Asylum picture (using airhorns as zombie distraction grenades, arrows vs. guns argument, etc.), but redeems itself by the end with a fantastically terrible cgi zombie-tiger fighting scene.

As far as Ving Rhames zombie movies, it's maybe a little better than the Ving Rhames Day of the Dead remake, but nowhere near as good as the Ving Rhames Dawn of the Dead remake.

Went and saw the new Troma flick Return to Nuke em High vol. 1 and holy hell was that a fun movie. If you liked their last few outings (poultrygeist, toxie 5, terror firmer), you'll enjoy this. I'm surprised this isn't getting more word of mouth. Lloyd Kaufman's been making independent movies for nearly 40 years and doesn't look like he's slowing down at all. His movies are akin to watching a one man juggling harmonica-player who's also playing fiddle with his feet lose control of his bowls unmercifully on stage, but still finishes his set. The bold part really needs to be stressed. The movie's about as much fun as a brick in the face, but holy poo poo is it a compelling movie.

Also, for anthologies, it seems Nightmares always falls to the wayside, probably for the best because two of the segments straight up suck dick, but the Emilio Estevez "Bishop of Battle" segment is pretty loving awesome, if you like "kid fights video games BUT IN REAL LIFE" scenarios.

It's pretty much done all it can, save for a few little things. Watching the Ferguson footage, it being real life, reminded me how terrifying the idea of found footage is when you put a realistic senerio in the mix. I'm going to be a bit hypocritical because my favorite of the genre is Cloverfield, but I really think the best way for found footage films to go is less about the supernatural horror, and more about realistic horror. But I want to see a found footage movie set inside of a mall where someone is going on a shooting spree. Or in a building during a terrorist attack. Something that isn't out of the realm of reality. Just for something new.

Agreed, although, I half expected to see an undead Parisian pedestrian casually walk past them as they emerged from the manhole, and that they did indeed end up in hell, which turns out to be just a mirror world to ours. I'm still not sure how I feel about Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1. It's got the titties and the gore, but man, Troma movies should NOT be shot on the loving RED camera.

Also, the random background ADR'd lines really stick out. What used to be my favorite little bits in Troma movies (the "Oh my god, he's got an afro!" line from Terror Firmer is still one of the best) became really distracting and outright lazy in Nuke 'Em High.

That being, said, the two female leads in that movie are crazy hot and Gene is easily one of my new favorite Troma characters now ("Gene is confused!").

"Bonestorm" is just narrowly superior to "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" in that it mixes foul-mouthed, rear end in a top hat teenagers with "everything going to poo poo," but in a more aesthetically interesting way. Like, in "SPAA" the camera is whipping around all the time, but everything is still totally coherent. "Bonestorm" actually looks like something that the lovely D.P. character in the story would have accidentally produced.

Viral has this whole apocalyptic vibe, so every story needs to be understood in that context. "Bonestorm" is the best segment because it's the one that most efficiently conveys the sense of disempowerment of just living one's life and accidentally being a witness to a horrible disaster, except instead of 9/11 the filmmakers mitigate the trauma of this through the summoning of a Mexican sewer monster. Unlike "Dante the Great" and "Parallel Monsters" which kind of just take up space, "Bonestorm" actually mounts a pretty solid rejection of the entire point of Viral. The film ends with society literally being consumed in a downward spiral of naval-gazing apathy facilitated by digital technology, social networking, etc. "Bonestorm" rejects this cynicism on the basis that this is 'faggy.' The characters who live are the ones who find room in their lives to help the poor.

We killed a lot of fools.
