zombies + sharks = fun

I just found this thread and given the title, I figured this was a good place to ask for some suggestions.

My husband hated horror movies when we met, but after many long years of occasional exposure, he's developed more of an interest. He's good with zombie stuff, horror-comedy, and older Friday-style slashers (or anything with similar levels of camp), but the movies he likes best tend to be either character-driven or involve interesting, surreal visuals. There's also an element of unpredictability to his taste that's hard for me to put my finger on. As an example, he tends to like italian horror in general, but while I was guessing that Argento or Bava would be the best fit, he turned out to be more into Fulci. (This is a source of great amusement for our horror-nerd friends who knew him back when he'd pass on even the mildest stuff.)

Movies that have worked well include Get Out, Suspiria, Night of the Demons 1 & 2, Zombie, Cat in the Brain, Dead Alive, Day of the Dead, Spider Baby, Motel Hell, Final Destination, and Messiah of Evil. He's also enjoyed most of the stuff Joe Bob's been introducing on Shudder. He can't do torture porn, anything with too much modern, realistic looking gore (older gross-out effects are fine though), or intense ghost/supernatural stories. Stuff like Hereditary or The Babadook wouldn't work at all, and even It Follows was getting a little close to the line.

Next I'm going to try Cemetery Man and probably some Cronenberg, but considering that he keeps surprising me by tagging along to local screenings and saying things like, "Who was that director? Fulci? Can we watch more from him?" I figured it might be a good idea to ask for a few other ideas.

Oh, those have happened. We're probably good on the usual cult hits, but he turned out to be so into weird-rear end italian movies that I'm hoping to find some other stuff that doesn't usually make the best-of lists.

These suggestions are so great, thanks. I enjoyed Santa Sangre but it had completely slipped my mind.

Yes, he's seen Dolls. (We showed it one year as my birthday party, so all my nearest and dearest have had that pleasure.) I probably shouldn't admit this, but my friend and I are dressing up as the punk girls from Dolls for Halloween this year. I have a little toy soldier doll and everything.

I know he's liked a couple of Lynch movies, but I'm not sure if that's one of 'em. I'll put it on the list, thanks.

We've watched From Beyond and Dagon in the past year or two. I also have a soft spot for Castle Freak, but I haven't floated that one yet.

Now I have a good, long list to get us through Halloween season, so thanks all! (Even if some of you do have tragically wrong opinions about Dolls.)

From Beyond holds up really well, and thanks to living near a new rental place, I've been going back to check out a lot of those nostalgic faves. Last week I rewatched The Last Slumber Party, which was a staple of our early-90s sleepovers, and wow that movie was a pile of poo poo. It's like what would happen if you described a bunch of slasher movies to a student filmmaker and they just went for it without having ever seen that kind of movie for themselves.

To add one more to the list, have you seen The Eyes of My Mother?

No, but that looks really interesting. I'm not too up on recent stuff unless it either got a wide release or showed up at my local film festival. My area has a good horror scene, but I'm starting to realize that's made me complacent about digging for new things the way I used to.

I watched Heredity on a beautiful day at the start of my summer break and it hosed me up for an entire day. Your mileage may vary but whoo boy I can't imagine being in even a slightly vulnerable state and watching that.

Same for me. I went to an afternoon showing and was alone in the theater except for an older couple. About three quarters through I thought about leaving and watching the rest on streaming, but I didn't want the olds to think I couldn't hang. The whole rest of the day and into the next morning, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Stage Fright would probably go pretty well with Suspiria. It's a fun, weird serial killer story set in a theater during rehearsals, so it's full of crazy costumes and backstage drama.

In adjacent horror news, I loaded up an old raspberry pi with a bunch of clips from black and white horror movies so I can plug in into my tiny pvm screen for spooky ambiance for my Halloween party.

I put on full movies with the sound off, which usually leads to a rotating group of 4-5 people sitting in there and making up their own silly dialogue and plotlines between whatever else they're talking about.

Another seriously creepy kids movie is Return to Oz. Between the Wheelers and the shrieking disembodied heads and the fact that Dorothy and friends make a sentient sleigh out of furniture and a stuffed moose head, there's also the real-world story arc about Aunt Em taking Dorothy to an asylum because she's tired and acting out a little after going through the tornado.

I used to laugh off stuff like Gremlins and Critters as a kid, but that one gave me nightmares.

It's not a perfect film, but it's good. I'd say if you're a fan of the original, give it a shot.

While I don't know your friend, I've talked to a few people that don't like it, and some of the reasons I've heard are downright bizarre criticisms.

Yeah, definitely don't skip it just based on one person's advice. I liked it a lot, but I am also down for a new wave of copycat slashers because there's bound to be a few good ones in that mix.

I get how the new Halloween might not work for everyone, but my friend who didn't care for it kept bashing it over something that the movie actually explains just fine. I got the impression that he'd made this big judgement about the story before it was over, and he was unwilling to rethink that opinion even after seeing how things played out.

How detailed were you planning to get in terms of subgenres for that new thread? Any interest in a effort post/recommendation list of animal attack movies?

I like the things on this list that I've seen, which means I should probably check out the others. One thing I did want to mention was that I appreciate your delivery. Fast YouTube Voice will usually make me swap over to watch something different, but you use enough pauses and enunciation that it doesn't sound too hard to make out or monotonous.

I just stumbled on a Letterboxd account for Conservapedia, and... well...

Halloween III review posted:

Unlike the two films before it (which has mass murder Michael Myers) this film's villain is a pagan who plans on sacrificing children via witchcraft to bring back the original celebration of Halloween. However he does this by selling masks to them which many critics pointed out may have been an anti-capitalism message. The film's "hero" is also an adulterer.

Army of Darkness review posted:

Despite its unrealistic depictions of demons, it's a pretty gun-centric pro-Second Amendment film.

Day of the Dead review posted:

Liberal scientists who plan to tame zombies are the "heroes", while the common sense conservative soldiers (whose plan is to euthanize them all) are the "villains".

I'm not sure this reviewer "gets" "the movies."

I have chosen Wishmaster I believe this was a wise choice.

I haven't watched that one since it came out, but I remember thinking it was fun. My mom came to the theater with me for some reason I don't remember, and she said it was interesting. If we pretend that "interesting" isn't mom-speak for "I regret letting my daughter pick the movie but don't want to say that and hurt her teenage feelings," then that's two recommendations for watching the hell out of Wishmaster.

What have you seen so far? Black Sunday, Kill Baby, Kill!, Planet of the Vampires, and Black Sabbath are all essential, but then there's what I guess most would consider lesser Bava like Hatchet for the Honeymoon, 5 Dolls For an August Moon, and Lisa and the Devil. I'd recommend watching everything Bava you can possibly get your hands on.

I agree with all this, and it says something about how great Bava was that something as entertaining as Five Dolls isn't even one of his best. Anyone who likes slashers should also watch Bay of Blood, which was really influential on the genre. The second Friday the 13th copied a couple of its death scenes, and it's got one of the best of Bava's fun endings.

I don't remember that line, but at one point she's on the phone having what sounds like a familiar argument with her mom about being fine on her own. It really stood out to me because the house she's in, especially the kitchen, doesn't really match up with a young woman living alone. I'd totally buy the idea that she was renting a furnished place, or even a room in someone's home, out near the lake.

That Goblin show was great. The non-seated part of the club didn't sell out in my town, but our show was right before Halloween so there were a lot of other events going on. We also had the other version of Goblin late last year (the one with Massimo Morante and the rest of the Suspiria-era members except for Simonetti), and a few fans I talked to hadn't realized those shows were with two different line-ups. During that previous show they just played the songs while some of the movie scenes projected behind them. It was a different experience than watching Suspiria with a live score, but I felt like it had a better overall energy.

My main recommendation for those who haven't seen it is Slugs. It's from the director of Pieces but it gets less love, possibly because it's a killer-creature movie instead of a slasher. Some of the things I like best about it (the dark humor and the fact that people's reactions to the slugs are as dangerous as the slugs themselves) get written off as cheesy, but some of its bad reviews are from folks who take the movie way more seriously than it takes itself. It has memorable scenes, one-liners, and great gore, and that's all I want out of my animal attack movies.
