Sorry if it has been discussed before, but last night we saw "Cam" on Netflix and, holy poo poo, how come critics raved about that steaming piece of crap?

long-rear end nips Diane posted:They liked it more than you did? I thought the twist was novel for a horror film. I also don't understand how it has been hailed as "woke" or feminist, considering that the main character uses extreme violence on herself for masturbating male costumers, who get off on seeing a woman bleed. The ending also didn't make any sense (is she going to keep breaking her nose every time the AI comes back?) not to mention that the mother helping her makeup before she whores herself out again was just cringy as all hell.

X-Ray Pecs posted:I haven’t seen Cam, but I’m just gonna say that complaining people act stupidly in a horror movie is just about the weakest possible complaint you can lob against any film. They didn't feel stupid in the traditional horror movie way (like saying "let's split up"), it was more like the decisions didn't make any sense whatsoever, down to the master plan in the end.

flashy_mcflash posted:Well first you have to accept that sex work is real work, and the writer of the film was/is a cam performer. It's feminist in the sense that she has complete agency over her decisions (until she doesn't, and her agency is taken away completely, which is the horror aspect and main conceit of the film). There's nothing cringey about the mother helping her in her career since lots of sex workers parents are fine with their chosen profession. I know that it isn't in vogue to criticize any sex workers, but She quite literally profits from people who masturbate watching her hurt herself. that's honestly worth shaming someone for, and not helping your daughter do it. There are better and more respectful depictions of sex workers in arrested development than in this thing.

Basebf555 posted:Maybe you just used a poor choice of words, but no, a person doesn't deserve to be "shamed" for that. It would certainly be an indicator that they could use some help, but shame is really not the answer. Since you might not have seen the film It's pretend violence. Fake self mutilation, etc., no real violence until the end..

So as to avoid derailing into sex work (though I'm happy to discuss it at length over PM or discord)... I also watched A Quiet Place, and I'm puzzled as to how they managed with farts.
