Here's my ride... a 2008 Volkswagen Passat R36: I'm too poor to even contemplate being able to afford an Audi RS6, so this is the best alternative! Finch! fucked around with this message at 01:22 on Jul 23, 2009 |

Putka posted:The inspector said that the only reason we're probably alive is the fact that we we're driving so fast, which stopped the moose from coming through the window onto us. Holy poo poo, that's amazing. Walking away from that is pretty special. Your car did good I don't have to contend with moose but I've been taught that if I see a kangaroo and a collision is inevitable, don't brake too heavily or else the front of the car will dip and flip the kangaroo through the windscreen and in to me My new car is here but here's my old car after a kangaroo at 120km/h. I didn't brake, but I did lift off... it went right over the top: It cost my insurance company $9000 to repair but they did and I drove it for a further two years. If I'd slammed the anchors on, I'd have been in a world of pain.

You Am I posted:$9000 for only that amount of damage? Holy poo poo, all I can see is the bonnet being a bit bent, did the roo bounce along your roof. I've seen cars looking worse after dealing with a kangaroo at slower speeds. I'd driven from Adelaide to Thredbo and back, and this happened five minutes from home on the freeway (near the Stirling exit for any Adelaide goons) after not having seen a single dead or alive kangaroo the 2700km round trip. I'm loving the R36, it's an enormous step up from a VY Commodore and even from a mark 5 Golf GTI.

dissss posted:Out of curiosity: Did it set the airbags off? You Am I posted:Ah, well if it hit the roof hard enough, then that'll screw up the safety cell for the passengers. After we hit it, I kept driving. I was only five minutes from home and I wasn't going to stop on the freeway at 3am in the dark, and the car didn't freak out much apart from the headlights pointing in different directions. I got the car home, which wasn't all that good because it just dropped coolant all over my driveway and was very annoying to get towed out of there the following day. I'm very glad that we had swapped drivers about two hours previously. My friend who had been driving would have freaked out after hitting a kangaroo. I've hit so many different animals so many times... I don't freak out as much. Finch! fucked around with this message at 16:01 on Jul 23, 2009 |

Hatebreed posted:North America didn't get the R36 or R50, or I'd be in one currently. I assume it has DSG? It's an all wheel drive (Haldex) 300 horsepower 3.6 litre narrow angle VR6, more or less the same as the 3.6 VR6 available in the North American Passat but tweaked a bit. VW Claim 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds for the sedan and 5.8 for the wagon. Apparently that's accurate, but I can't be sure. It's quick enough, but it's too heavy to punt through corners like a Golf GTI or something. It's a great tourer, though. I haven't driven the R50 but the thought of it makes me very happy... twin turbo V10 diesel! Dad has had a diesel Q7 for years but unfortunately it's not the V12 diesel.

fingerling posted:That is sexy as man. How do you (did you?) like the prices of any European car in Adelaide? I wish I had a garage.. totally envious of you in any case! Guh, everything here is overpriced, although the R36 was a relative bargain. When I bought mine (new in 2008), in Europe the R36 was more expensive than the BMW 335i X-Drive that we don't even get here - and about half the price of a 335i here. I thought that was a pretty good deal until I realised that the same amount of money in the US would have put me in an M3/C63 or very nearly in to a 911. That said, it's a great car. It's an RS6's baby cousin, and about one quarter the price. No mechanical issues, either, unlike my previous Holdens and Toyotas. It does love petrol, though, especially the way I drive it (manually with flappy paddles and an aversion to anything above third gear if I can avoid it). I've recently ordered an A45 to replace a 2006 Golf GTI (for my mother, but I'll drive it and the A250 Sport was boring). I don't even want to think about the money or what I could buy with it in another market... Finch! fucked around with this message at 03:01 on Jun 12, 2013 |

Finch! posted:Here's my ride... a 2008 Volkswagen Passat R36: My R36 has a new stablemate! I posted this guy in the hot hatch thread shortly after I got it and just before I hosed off overseas for six weeks. I've been home for a few days and I'm in love all over again. So ridiculous, so fast, and an absolute riot to drive. I'm yet to fully figure out the Command system, and wish the stupid screen were a touch screen, but whatever. I find myself going everywhere the long way and probably annoying everybody with the way I provoke all the hilarious noises it makes.

It's the baby AMG - the A45. Two litre turbocharge four cylinder, all wheel drive, 355 horsepower, and this will take it to 410hp and 413ftlb. Tempting!

PCOS Bill posted:Sounds fun. What kind of fuel economy? Honestly, I have no idea. The trip computer never leaves "digital speedometer" mode because it's too easy to be travelling way too fast without any effort. I think I've filled it up four times (so it's used five tanks) in 1600km - so not wonderful, but I'm not driving it for economy either. The official figures are 6.9 litres per 100km, but I'm guessing the way I drive it I would be seeing closer to 15L/100km. Better than a C63, and better than the R36. I'll check the computer figures tomorrow - I just put it away for the night. Squeeze posted:How do you find the flappy paddle gearbox on the AMG? I test drove a regular 200CD 4matic version and it drove me crazy. Don't know if it's the diesel engines fault or what, but you had to pull the paddle like a second before you wanted it to shift. Also the interior felt cramped, I couldn't see out, but every new car feels like that.. It's the seven speed twin clutch thing. It's not as responsive as the six speed Volkswagen DSG in my R36. I mean, it can be, but it likes to hesitate a lot more on downshifts. Upshifts are lightning fast and on demand. I'm still getting used to it but I kind of like it. I only ever drive it in manual mode. None of this "comfort" or "sport" malarkey. Interestingly, unlike the VW DSG's I'm very familiar with, when it hits the rev limiter it doesn't change up. It cuts power and that can be a little disconcerting. Finch! fucked around with this message at 15:02 on May 24, 2014 |

fingerling posted:gently caress man, I am still in love with your VW. I don't care how expensive anything on it would be, an absolutely amazing car. I suppose the cheap variant here in Adelaide would be a Stagea (urgh), but still.. one can dream! R36's shouldn't be too expensive these days. If VW ever release an R36 successor I'm not expecting any more than about $28000 on the trade in, maybe about $5000 more if I were to sell it privately. Mine's six years old and has done only around 48000km. They depreciate like falling stones, particularly since mine doesn't have the reversing camera (VW Australia forgot to tell the factory to attach it) and missed out on the MY10 (I think) adaptive cruise control, upgraded instrument cluster, and dynamic suspension. Aside from routine servicing at a VW specialist, it hasn't cost me anything but tyres, oil, and fuel. Nothing has gone wrong with it and I think there's been one recall for some warranty work, but that's it. It does like to drink, though, and much like the A45 I don't drive it for economy. Why use 5th gear when 2nd will do? It's driven enthusiastically but it's always been treated sympathetically. We get a lot of sweet wagons here in Adelaide Bape Culture posted:I thought the a45 had cannards and a wing! It can. Here in Australia, that's one of three option packages we have. We get pretty much everything as standard, but have three - only three - possible options: black wheels (like I did), "performance" suspension (unnecessary outside track work), and the aero package with the silly looking wing and the front bits. I wanted to be a bit more subtle, hence the nearly complete debadging (there's still the Turbo //AMG badges on the side) and fairly boring colour choice. It still attracts a bit of attention, but it's hard to disguise the sound it makes so that's no surprise. Finch! fucked around with this message at 12:42 on May 25, 2014 |
