I talked with a couple of the other DJs and we all agreed that it's time for a new thread since the original thread has for the first 20 or 30 pages broken links. Also region25 doesn't seem to post anymore so he couldn't update the OP or anything. I'll do my best to keep the OP updated and try to keep a list of all the SA DJs.

New to Dance/electronic/this sort of music?
Here are some tips/FAQ:
Q: what are the different genres i'm so confused. isnt "better off alone" techno?

A: Everyone will tell you something different for what genre is what.
The best way to figure out what the different genres are is to browser through the sections of the majors sites (beatport.com , audiojelly.com , vinyl-distribution.nl , as a few example)

Q: I don't like any one genre or I can't figure out how to choose what music to listen to.

A. There are a few ways you can go about solving this problem:
Start with an artist you like. If they are also DJs, download their sets (tribalmixes.com is what I use). If they arent DJs try websites that have a "users also like/purchased" feature (for example beatport does). If this doesnt help you, try using discogs and browsing around.

New to DJing?
I'll add stuff here in the future.

Rules
1. Vinyl vs. CD vs. Laptop debate does not belong here.
2. If anything on the DJ list is incorrect, PM or AIM me. Please don't reply to the thread with nothing other than "please correct my genre". Feel free to add your info when you post a mix and I will add it to the list.

DJ Resources
Feel free to contact me (PM or AIM) anytime if you have any questions involving DJing. Unfortunately, I will be unable to answer most questions that involve laptop DJing (i.e. traktor, serato, or ableton). Some people who may be able to help you are: Traktor Scratch (Rivfader), Ableton (I Dig Gardening), Traktor (Vernacular). I can't promise they will be willing to help, but I have noticed/know they use that software.

Where to get your music:
torrents <- bad, dont do this
http://www.beatport.com
http://www.vinyl-distribution.nl/
http://www.audiojelly.com

Where to get equipment:
I suggest you DONT buy any equipment online unless you have tried it in person. Always try gear out before you buy. Good places to try gear at include: Guitar center, your friends, clubs, etc.

A special thanks to the awesometownradio goon, TheWevel, for the free hosting he is providing many goons! :)

I posted a mix in the last thread, but the link never worked and I never got any feedback, and I'd like to hear what people have to say about it.

Portfolio posted:

So I finished my first mix I actually like enough to share with people. I don't actually have talent, so this is all done with Ableton Live, not with turntables or anything.

Anyway, the idea is that it's supposed to be dancy as hell, so if at any point this mix does not make you feel like jumping up and dancing like a maniac, please let me know, so I can excise it. It's mostly house or house-related stuff, but towards the middle it gets sort of ravey acid techno, and towards the end it's all over the place, but hopefully in a good way. An abnormal number of the artists I used turned out to be French, somehow (or at least Quebecois). Normally I don't like using more than one track by any one artist, but I made an exception here for remixes.

It's about an hour long. Any and all feedback appreciated.

Tracklist:

Intro
Tenderoni - Chromeo
Travailler (Orgasmic remix) - TTC
Mothership Reconnection (feat. Parliament / Funkadelic) (Daft Punk remix) - Scott Grooves
Talkin' All That Jazz (Torti's Old Skool Mix of Edits dub) - Stetsasonic
The Salmon Dance (Hervé remix) - The Chemical Brothers
High Life - Daft Punk
Cassius 99 (remix) - Cassius
Gay Dentists - Mr. Oizo
You Gonna Want Me - Tiga
Work on You - MSTRKRFT
Electronic Battle Weapon 1 (It Doesn't Matter) - The Chemical Brothers
Sweat - The Micronauts
The Prime Time of Your Life (Para One remix) - Daft Punk
Outrage - Thomas Bangalter
Where's Your Head At - Basement Jaxx
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) - Dead or Alive
It's Like That (Jason Nevins remix) - Run-D.M.C.
XR2 - M.I.A.
Eight Sum - Amon Tobin
Disco Infiltrator - LCD Soundsystem
Actionist Respoke - Mouse on Mars
ZDRLT (Rewind) - Digitalism
Outro

Also, if anyone has any tips on how to tidily split this up into tracks, let me know. If I just render them as separate tracks in Ableton, iTunes seems to drop the slightest, but noticeable, instant of music, making the transitions awkward if you're paying any sort of attention. Winamp doesn't seem to have a problem, but my worry is that the lowest common denominators out there are all using iTunes anyway, so it might as well sound right for them too.

There are a lot of good songs on here, although some of them are pretty old. (downloading now)

I like track #18 . What you can do is post edit out where you trainrecked (that is: cut it all out)... using an effect or something.

I am always lagging behind on new realeases and I like to use some classics now and then just because I like 'em and sometimes you got to show old tracks some love. lol.

When posting tracklists, how do you guys determine how to write the tracks, like in what order the info is spelled out? jonmitz for example does Title - Mix - Artist while many others do Artist - Title - Mix... Is there a specific reason behind that, like the program used to make the mix or something? Or maybe something like focus on track vs focus on artist? Is it a conscious decision at all?

Yo, I'm based out of Denver, a former Beatport employee, and I play downtempo, hip-hop, and house in addition to techhouse and techno. I'm a pseudo-resident at club Beta here in town (owned by one of the founders of Beatport hence the name of the upstairs room is the Beatport Lounge)

When I have a few mins I'll make a post aggregating all the previous sets I had posted in the previous thread (all the links are still working)

Right on with the new thread. You can put me down in San Francisco (even though I'm Oakland!!!)

I spin funk, soul, and hip-hop mainly.

The only permanent hosted mix I got right now is here, I got second place:
http://rockstargames.com/upload/

As a side note, I've been working on some experimental poo poo lately and I hope to have some new mixes up real soon. I've been really into playing fast dance 45s at 33. Basically, I'm trying to make screw tapes in all different genres, with a focus on faster dance poo poo like DnB and 80's new wave. It's a little weird, so I'm hoping to run some mixes by ya'll first, before weirding out a party here...

this mix is pretty ownage but I think you shouldn't played the vocal part of 'blind' over the vocal part of 'world invaders'. vocals over vocals is kind of a no-no.

yeah i'll def alter that if i do this live sometime. i think the best part is that deep house section that blends osborne and metro area 26 minutes in; id rather listen to that blend than either of those tracks individually, which is pretty much the standard i try to keep to when i'm working on mixes. it's pretty weak to use ableton if you're just playing a song out for three minutes followed by a 20 second crossfade, so i try to keep mine as complex as possible (there's only about five minutes of material that is allowed to play solo without some blend). you may also note the entire thing is harmonically mixed so there isn't any major dissonance, and generally follows the circle of fifths in terms of key progression. the track list/order/timing took me about a week to work out.

now that you can easily get programs that will scan your tracks for key/bpm i don't know why everybody doesn't do it. on the other hand, i've had years of music theory, concert band, etc. that i'm guessing most DJs haven't had.

I absolutely hate pre-planning anything w/r/t DJing. It's a very very spontaneous thing for me, and doing all that pre-work (let alone working on a mix for an entire WEEK!!!) sounds like the opposite of fun to me. I love pulling records outta my box and slamming them on.

Who said you had to pre-plan anything? Just write down the keys (and BPMs if necessary) of all your tracks and then either memorize or bring with you a circle of fifths. No pre-planning required.

yeah, i think i'd feel differently if i was actually spinning records, but as long as i'm doing ableton i think this is the way to go, otherwise i just can't justify it as artistically valid. i really enjoy the work that goes into it; there's nothing better than getting home from work, smoking a bowl, and loving around with different blends for a few hours. i'm a compulsive perfectionist with my mixes and am not happy unless they're smooth and error free, start to finish. i'm starting to build up a decent record collection but it'll take me a few years before i have enough to produce the kind of mixes i do now, and even then it'd take several more years of practice before i'd be able to put out anything of this quality. i'd love to be that good and maybe i'll get there eventually, but i don't feel like that should preclude me from doing what i do now (i know that's not what you're implying).

VVV i actually try to make my music creation process as mechanistic and inorganic as possible. it's a personal aesthetic choice, and as i said, i think extensive planning beforehand is great fun. to each his own. i know i'm not a dj.

i agree. the fun of mixing is the spontaneity of it all. mixes that are super-planned out and mixed entirely in key (using software) are nice to hear and all but it honestly isn't wholly representative of your skill as a DJ. plus, like tyler said, it's no fun! there's nothing wrong with having a few choice transitions in the back of your head that you're primed to use but there's a boundary between mathematical and instinctual (is that a word? if not it should be) that people need to watch out for

jon, i'm downloading your tech mix and am looking forward to giving it a listen. i'm gonna hopefully post a few tech/prog mixes of my own soon.

edit: wanted to point out that alot of my tracks are keyed but i really tend not to rely on them. maybe if i for the life of me can't think of a good next track i'll throw on something that follows the circle of fifths thing

T-rek is also a local DJ around here in Melbourne. The more you know. Orkestrated are loving poo poo though, they play the most boring cheesy electro house / champagne girly house you could imagine. Their "remixes" are loving terrible and they honestly don't deserve any recognition for doing anything at all and I hope they fade out of the scene as fast as they entered it.

I'm not even being jealous, they're really that bad.

I love your new avatar.

Yeah I have to agree about it being spontaneous. I occasionally get a LOT of poo poo from people about me not mixing solely within similar keys. The problem with key mixing is it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. In the end, your ear will tell you what sounds good, and some of the best transitions I have ever had were between completely opposite keys. I really get annoyed every time someone brings up harmonic mixing as if it's the only right way to mix.

I don't keymark my songs when I burn them to CDs, since I never worry about harmonic mixing when I'm at a party (thats NOT saying I don't listen to what my ears tell me, this gets misinterpreted a lot) since I don't want to be limited by what keys I'm in. Sometimes I will run my songs through audio programs that determine the key and I only use it when I can't find a good way to transitions between songs.

I for some reason seem to meet a lot of people who think harmonic mixing is, seriously, the ONLY thing you should worry about while spinning

If that makes sense...

For me, getting the key of a song is just something I do to prep, like setting up cue points. I like improvising the song selections in my sets, but I also want all my mixes to sound as good as possible. The key just gives me more information on whether the songs will mix well.

I'm exactly the same, the few songs that I do mix that are melodic based are interspersed between techier songs that rely on rhythm more so than melodic hooks, so it's alot easier to create an ebb and flow with the set and really make the songs that have a melodic feel stand out and make a mark with the listener.

Harmonic mixing is bit of a waste of time. To each their own though and I've tried it, it just seemed really forced for me and stifled my creativity a poo poo load.

Also for anyone that is interested created this set a couple of days ago:

quote:

Kultrun - Ten Times
Sascha Braemer - Around
I:cube - Supernovac
Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads - Mushrooms (Justin Martin Remix)
Gimikk - Wefunk Refunk
Daniel Stefanik - Effercescing Elephant
Daniel Steinberg - I like to Be (Marcus Meinhardt Remix)
Eric Entrena, D-Unity - Drugs and Stuff
Ludovic Vendi - Limbo (Henry Saiz Remix)
Marco Esse - 0.8
Marion Krupa - Oyama (Upnoise Remix)
Meat Katie - Stop the Revolution (Dubfire Remix)
Marshall - Dr. Flute (Mark Broom Remix)
Gabry T. - Twareg goes Crazy
Kultrun - Personal Space
