Equally, the wonderful Let's Talk Drum & Bass! (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2242766) and Let's Talk Dubstep! (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2945218) deserve adding to the links. Lots of extra information about the genres there...

Dear diary, today I

here are my latest mixes:

mrfart-chaostheory-1_78.jpg
2008-11-mrfart-chaostheory-1_78 - loads of hits, used on belgian radio station.
First part has mostly funky beats, idm, garage and dubstep. Second half is more elektro and tech-house minded.

mrfart-chaostheory-116a - made very fast, right before I left for dour festival (I needed something to listen to in the car)

mrfart-kyoto-hiroshima.jpg - made on a bullettrain from kyoto to hiroshima, later remixed with EQ and a couple of tracks added. I guess I wanted to proof that I could make a *serious* dj mix.
Download this if you're more interested in strictly tech-house, techno and minimal.

I've been itching to make some mixes for many years, but have never been able to fit 2 decks and a mixer into my budget - but this weekend I got a Novation Nocturn , and I'm using Ableton Live to mix some electro tracks together. My first impression is that holy gently caress it feels GOOD when you do stuff right. I can't imagine what it must be like to do it in front of actual people.

Don't have a mix, but a funny/infuriating thing happened to me while I was djing and figured this would be a good place to post it.

I'm going behind the decks to start spinning records, the music is playing all throughout the area but the only people in the covered area where the dj booth and the food were was this group of 50-60something old squares sitting around and loudly complaining about the music, I think they were neighbors or family members of the guy throwing the party. I start spinning and one of the guys comes over and asks if I can play some classic rock. I politely told him, I'm just here to spin minimal techno, I'm here as a favor to the guy throwing the party and I only brought 3 cds of this kind of music to play. He asks if I'll play a cd that he gets from his car (wtf?) and I tell him, I'm just going to do a short set here, maybe the next dj will play classic rock (a lie, my friend specifically asked house and techno djs to play). So he goes back. I get one song into my set and one of the other old guys comes up and says "we're the only people on the dance floor, why can't you play some music we like?" Not to mention the fact that there are lots of people dancing on the bus that's parked directly next to the dance area, and people chilling out by the fire listening to it, I just told him cordially that I didn't BRING any other cds because this is a house and techno event that house and techno DJs were booked for.

So I keep playing, keep in mind I am only 3 songs into my set at this point and am in the middle of mixing tracks, and this loving psycho slurring bitch comes up screaming "CHANGE IT! CHANGE IT! CHANGE IT!", she walks behind the dj booth and gets in my face and tries to pull me away from the decks. I try to tell her the same thing I told the others and she just keeps on screaming at me, pulls my headphones off and starts slapping me on the chest and wraps her nasty old claws around my neck trying to strangle me. Of course it's an old lady, I'm not going to hit her back and she's not actually hurting me but naturally I'm pissed at this point and just tell her "fine, you want me to turn the loving music off? you wanna listen to silence? I'll turn it off" and she just starts strangling me again and won't let me reach past her to turn the mixer off. Some people on the bus and outside are starting to notice and come down at this point and eventually her friends come over and lead her away. Of course my friend who is throwing the party is nowhere to be found this entire time, I'm not even sure if he knew it happened. I chill out on the bus for a while with my friend, drink and smoke some more but I didn't end up getting to do my set, so we just took off at like midnight.

I'm not really mad that she lost her cool, I don't even really care that she put her hands on me because she obviously wasn't trying to actually kill me and it was kind of funny in retrospect. What shocks me the most is how loving insolent that whole group's attitude was. You come to a free party to drink a bunch of beer, a party that you KNOW is a techno/house event, and then have the loving GALL to demand to listen to some other genre of music. You know an awesome place where you can listen to Springsteen and the Stones all night long? Your loving house!! Also, basically every pub or tavern in this county! This is probably the only event in my town where you can even hear minimal techno this month and a lot of people are grooving on it here so if you don't like it, loving leave! To me this is the epitome of why I don't like playing at bars, weddings etc, djs get absolutely no respect and are treated like glorified ipods. No one would THINK of assaulting a piano player at a restaurant who isn't playing the genre you like, or a live band trying to put on a show, and I'm up here mixing a bunch of tracks that I spent hours selecting, trying to come up with a good flow to get people dancing for this thing.

So, anyone else have good stories about getting attacked by drunk people with bad taste? I know it must've happened to some of you...

That's some bad stuff right there. Good of you to have kept your cool and just chill afterwards. Getting upset yourself only leads to even worse things at moments like that.

This may sound weird, but I've actually gotten used to being treated like poo poo when I DJ certain parties. It's something that just happens too often. Be it some drunk chick coming over to the DJ-booth telling me "this music sucks, can't you play anything good" (classic example) to the point where one time the DJ playing prior to me just wouldn't let me start my set by constantly throwing in another tune and basically ignoring me. That was a real "what the..." moment. I ended up simply telling him to get the gently caress out or I would pull the plug on all gear, but it wasn't until the host of the party came up to him that he actually left.

I do think what you described happens because people don't consider DJ's on anywhere near the same level as real musicians. To most people we are in fact glorified iPods. They think anyone can be a DJ, and that's where the problem sits. Because in their mind anyone can do it, you are nothing special and no different from the neighbours 14 year old kid.

Also, what you should keep in mind, is that the person hosting the party is to be blamed for this mostly. He apparently did not point out clearly enough that there would only be DJ's playing minimal and no all-round everything-goes DJ's. I was asked to do a set once, and they told me upfront the crowd would be "mostly house-lovers". They weren't, everyone was expecting trance. I didn't have that, since I don't play trance, so to save myself 1.5 hours of humiliation and a lot of nasty looks I asked the other guy to fill in for me. The host later apologized and paid my fee, but my night was "ruined" anyway, as I had been looking forward to that gig.

As for stories, the weirdest thing that ever happened to me was some girl, who apparently didn't like what I was playing, coming up to the dj booth at a certain point, and pulling out the power cable to one of my CDJ's and throwing it into the crowd. Me and my buddy were absolutely dumbfounded and not sure if we would laugh or start yelling.

Also, jon could you maybe change my info in the OP to:

So, anyone else have good stories about getting attacked by drunk people with bad taste? I know it must've happened to some of you...

Sure.. Back in 2001 I had a residency at a small nightclub. It was one of those places that attracted all sorts of weird people. I had been working there for almost a year playing 1-2 nights per week minimum, so it was all routine at this point.
It was a night just like any other. Obnoxious drunk people was nothing new, and I'd learned to deal with them... Sort of.

At around 2 hours before closing time, a friend of mine came up to the booth. She was pretty wasted, and wanted me to take her purse for her. I doubled as a warderobe for my friends at this place so that wasnt out of the ordinary; except she didnt give it to me, she slammed it down over the edge of the booth and it offcourse landed right on the cd deck, PAUSE! SILENT CLUB! Not to mention knocking my beer over. I got pissed and tossed the purse back at her and yelled to her that her warderobe priveliges had been revoked for the evening, after I managed to get a new song going.

I didnt think anything of it. Drunk friend being dumb, no big deal. Half an hour later, a well known local gangster comes up to the booth and stares at me. The "yes im here to intimidate you" stare. Now this guy had quite a rep. He had pulled a gun on some guy at this other club in town just 3 months ago, but never pulled any poo poo at our place. I was intimidated.

"Hit me." He said, still staring. I had no idea what the gently caress "I SAID HIT ME" and he smashed his fist into the mixer and hosed around with the controls. He hit the master and the PA got cranked to max. The noise was amazing, and I quickly moved forward to turn it down before something blew. Oh snap, he grabbed me, and was about to mash my face in, but I got away, save for 3cm, he grazed my jaw. I stood back and was pretty loving petrified at this point. "SO YOU LIKE HITTING GIRLS HUH, HIT ME INSTEAD!"

Great. The bitch had went to him crying that I had hit her for loving around in my booth, and now he'd found this evenings entertainment. The guards were circulating so I knew if the music stopped for an extended period they would get over there and see what was up, so while staying out of his reach, I managed to kick the amps powerbutton with my foot and killing the soundsystem. Thankfully another friend had seen all of this from the dancefloor, and got the guards over, and they got him out. "I'M WAITING OUTSIDE FOR YOU" was the last thing I heard. The guy I shared the residency came into the booth to see what the gently caress, and I just told him to take over, while I sat down and smoked, shaking like a leaf.

Great night.

Finished my "yearmix", or whatever you wanna call it. It's not so much a really good representation of prog in 2008, but more of a "tracks that made 2008 good" kind of thing.

It's got some minor bumps here and there since I had to do it in 1 take without editing afterwards. Took it down from 200 to 60 to 21 tracks. That was the hardest part by far.

Anyway, enough bullshit excuses:

whats with all the reposts.

new thread, new poo poo, right?

Well the old thread will eventually disappear into archives, but all the links for previously posted mixes were still working. I figured I'd consolidate them here, although in retrospect maybe I should pull the tracklistings so it's not such a huge post.

New mixes only from here on out...

I didn't really dig the hip hop (or whatever it's called) in the beginning, but it smoothed out after that. This was really good. :hfive:

Thanks :)

Don't know where to put this so I'll just ask here. This is for any techno heads, I'm looking for a track ID that I heard on DI's techno station, the lyrics were as such:

Just close your eyes..

forget the people
forget the world
forget the (don't remember)

Just close your eyes..

That's all I know. I think the track is pretty recent.

That's kind of a famous sample. The most well known use being from Acen's 'Close Your Eyes', of which there were about a million remixes but I wouldn't be surprised if a more recent track use the sample.

So you're the Laminar Flow guy, I don't remember which mix it was but I split it up into 4 CD's and they have gotten more than their fair share of play in my car. Thanks for the great mixes, this one already sounds great!

Its not recent.

John Creamer & Stephane K - Forget the world. Theres 1001 remixes of it. I THINK i dug the G-pal mix back in the day.

edit: actually it got released as an acapella too, so it could be anything. but thats the name of the vocal atleast.

edit2: why do I not read posts, beaten badly.

:siren:Hey guys, I guess you all missed the part in the OP where it says to not post in this thread to update your entry on the list, instead to email me or PM (preferred). There are a lot of posts that are contentless (you can add your info when you post a mix but dont add a post with nothing but info about yourself) because you ignored this rule, so please stop doing it:siren:

Oooooh, let me get in on this.

This DJ mix was recorded live off the boards at my friend's house on New Year's Eve. I had a glass to my right that people would pour alcohol in as a token of gratitude for awesome music, and you can hear the alcohol start to take effect here and there with the occasional lack of bass or un-beatmatched track. I blame the mysterious Minnesotan hipster with a bottle of absinthe.

This mix is of specific interest because it was the first time I performed using Traktor as opposed to Live, and I think I did a pretty good job of it. It was entirely free-form, and you can hear me having a lot of fun with the filters.

Listen

Genre: Progressive house, electro, French touch
