This one was done in Ableton, though I like to mix in Virtual DJ. I can mix with CDJs and a mixer as well but I don't have my own any more.

Certain combinations of kicks do this when they are very close to being aligned. This happens alot especially with trance. Normally this needs to be rectified by either adjusting the phase of the kicks, choosing two different songs, or using the eq to compensate.

wayfinder posted:Something that I've noticed with your mixes (and from this thread, yours only so far), is that you frequently have the kick drums of two songs colliding in a way that makes them drop the bass more or less completely. For a quick example, take the transition in Laminar Flow 17 @ ~55 minutes in. I can't imagine it's a conscious decision because it really takes away from (at least my) enjoyment of the mix. I keep wondering if it's a software thing, or some kind of phase issue with my listening equipment or what, but it's pretty irritating sometimes. Have you ever noticed it while playing at a club? How about at home? Its phasing. 2 sounds with almost exactly the same timing and frequency = cancellation. 4 Band EQ's and some swift moves on them can get around this quite easily.

there are only two ways to get around kick drum phasing that I've found. a) beatmatch absolutely perfectly b) never have the two tracks' bass levels too close (always have one almost all the way up and the other almost all the way down).

I wish I had a 4 band EQ. I don't really have any good ways to protect myself against the phase destruction that occurs. Except not playing the 140bpm trance stuff (which I'm moving away from, actually)

I prefer to mix in and out of tracks when it feels right. Depending on the type of music you're playing and who you're playing it to can greatly affect whether or not it's necessary to move through songs at a quicker or slower pace. When I'm mixing, I feel like forcing a mix is far worse than riding one out a little longer. It really just depends on the situation and the person doing the mixing though.

Guess I have to remember to turn them up before I save them. Just crank up the volume adjustment in iTunes and they should be a bit louder

New Mix for all you tech-heads. Sjoewe and I recorded this set this afternoon. It turned out so well, we're thinking of using it as a demo-tape to send to some clubs and organisations. We recently came up with a name for our DJ-duo: Rahmenfluss. It's German, but doesn't really mean anything other than our two last names combined in a weird way. We figured however that since we're playing minimal and techno having a German name would be the way to go. I'm just making up a good story to cover the fact that it started out as a joke, but then kinda stuck. Good mixes everyone! I've really broadened my style lately. While I used to only play house music, I'm now trying to incorporate hip hop, dubstep, and a host of other stuff for some variety. My sets have now taken the form of starting off in dubstep territory, so 70-80 BPM, going up through hip hop and then to house, topping off at around 135. Now, the only problem is that dubstep is, as a rule, rather harsh and therefore not a very good sound to coax people onto the dancefloor. So, in an attempt to solve that issue, I see two options: The first is to start off with more "melodic" dubstep, like Caspa - Cockney Violin, which is nice but I like to start off with a bang. The other option is to just jump straight into it. I recently found a song that works pretty well with "My Love" by Justin Timberlake, which I figure will get people out, and once they're dancing its much harder to lose them. Here is the mix: http://www.tindeck.com/listen/vxmo. I'm not gonna play the whole of both tracks, but enough to provide context. Now, what do you guys think about it? Is it too abrupt? Do you think playing such an intense song right after such a poppy one will drive people away? Of course, I know a more usual set make-up is hip-hop ---> dubstep ----> house, but I hate the idea of slowing down during a set, at any time. EDIT: The dubstep song I mix into is Nero - Night Thunder, if you were wondering. Altoidss fucked around with this message at 01:58 on Feb 25, 2009 |

I think two things: 1.) The link is broken because of the period at the end. 2.) I think it sounds ok, as long as you're using it to bridge into something else and not playing the full 5 minute song. I would probably only go with 90 seconds of it at the most, but that's just me. edit: maybe try it with an acapella over it
