Are there any artists similar to Andrew Bird? There's Sufjan Stevens, I guess, and M. Ward (who is a bit too low-key for me), but so far I haven't really found any of the acoustic-songwriter-types who sing and write anything like Bird's excellent style. Maybe it's the violin that gives it that extra push. edit: for music like Explosions in the Sky, the post-rock thread would be a good place to start. I'm a pretty massive Dylan fan (obviously) and while I love almost all his stuff my favorite album is the Basement Tapes. Which sort of sucks as the quality is poo poo (although this does add to the atmosphere). Does anyone know a band which matches the whole atmosphere of that album besides The Band?

Hey y'all - i'm looking really specifically for what i'd probably best describe as 'smooth hipster indie with folk and/or electronica influence' - and the best examples i have would be on this playlist: Sea Wolf – You're a Wolf Yeasayer – 2080 The Sea and Cake – Weekend Animal Collective – My Girls Frightened Rabbit – I Feel Better BSS Presents Brendan Canning - Hit The Wall School of Seven Bells – Iamundernodisguise Tortoise – TNT Plants and Animals – Feedback in the Field really, i'm intrigued by the 'scene' that this stuff comes out of (although i'm aware its not a geographic scene) - this effortlessly cool indie pop has really got me wanting more! anyone got some tracks/albums for me to listen to? hope you guys can help me, as so far my normal ports of call are failing me.

I'm looking for some new bands not so much exclusively based on their sound but on their versatility and influences. Let me explain: I've been spending the better part of my music-appreciating years listening to the "college rock" bands of the 80s-90s and my favorites have always been the ones who aren't afraid to play music rooted in tradition while still pushing that punk/post-punk boundary. Alas, those days are over. Still, I have managed to hear one or two bands coming out within the last few years who play genuinely great music that hearkens back to those grand ol' days that make me sound older and older. I'm hoping some of you guys and gals know what I'm talking about.. Two of the bands that have caught my ear are Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and The Reigning Sound. I love the way the bands mix punk and power pop with different genres -- country, folk, what-have-you -- and aren't afraid to pick up an acoustic guitar and actually SING. All rec's appreciated!

After all this Limp Bizkit chat I was digging out all my old albums from high school and I realised how awesome Mudvayne's LD50 album is. I love the progressive feel and the funk bass. The best way to describe what I'm looking for is stripped country/folk. Some examples: Cul De Sac by Tomahawk I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You by Hank Williams III There are a few things that I find appealing about these, however. The main attraction I have is how "bare" the tracks are. Another thing I enjoy is that they're country/folk with something "off" with them, such as the tuning of the guitar in the former track and the distortion in both. I'm not sure if this will get me a lot of poo poo, but I really like Brad Paisley's Play album, where it's a lot of great guitar work and mostly instrumental. I'm not a huge country fan, but this stuff is really great, and while I don't like most of the duets, that single with Keith Urban has some fantastic guitar in it that I can never skip. So, two questions I guess. One, are any other albums by Paisley or Urban focused more on the guitar and instrumental work like this album? Two: What are some other albums that might have this same sort of great southern/country guitar work? Instrumental isn't a requirement by any means.

Well, I'm not exactly sure if this is the right place to post this but it seemed the most reasonable. I don't know how many of you will be interested in this, but I stumbled upon it accidentally. I was trying to locate the theme used for Jack Sparrow in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the original), so I pulled up Amazon's soundtrack page and found the list of titles. I go here frequently when I hear a piece of music I like and want to preview it so I can make note to purchase it at a later point. Here was the page. There I found a similar theme, but not quite the one as played in the original film. http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Caribbean-Dead-Mans-Chest/dp/B000FTCF2M/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b ...So I started dicking around and clicking on random pieces from Soundtrack 2 and then Soundtrack 1. Surprisingly, I found in almost every case (but with one or two exceptions), when you overlay the tracks at random from Soundtrack 1 to Soundtrack 2, it produces some really good and interesting sounds. I guess this is what you get for having similar theme music, but it's pretty cool. So try it out. Open up page 1 and click on one track, then go to page 2 and click on another random track (at any point), and you will see they merge quite nicely and give you new pieces. I've inexplicably become a huge fan of Rush in the past few weeks. What started as a curiosity has really gotten out of hand and I ended up buying Moving Pictures, Signals, Presto, Counterparts, Test For Echo. I'm looking at picking up Grace Under Pressure and Permanent Waves as well. What else should I look into beyond the scope of Rush? This kind of music has largely gone by me unnoticed. Recommendations?

Hey guys! Taking suggestions here to broaden my musical horizon. I *love*: Muse The Killers I enjoy these also: MGMT Little Boots La Roux Alphabeat Justice Arcade Fire Arctic Monkeys Red Hot Chili Peppers Paramore Queen I realize this is a real mess, but I'm looking for something along the lines of Muse, mainly. My point with the others are that I'm not looking for just instrumental masturbation like Dream Theatre or whatever those pretentious douches are called that keep making Muse ripoff songs. I like Muse's idea of progrock, but with some melody and coherent theme. A hybrid of Muse and The Killers would be awesome. Guitar solos and catchy hooks with some synths and high-pitched vocals yay.

In the Of Montreal/Jon Brion remix album that just came out, there's an extended version of Gallery Piece with some really intense poppy melodic synth work at the end. I'm not really familiar with electronic stuff, but I'd really appreciate with some heavily layered synth that is more upbeat if possible. Dan Deacon is pretty cool too.
