I need more music like "Let's Go away for Awhile" off of Pet Sounds.

To elaborate, I'm pretty much looking for interesting instrumental music be it classical, post-rock, ambient, or ideally some avante-garde stuff that a mainstream musician made and never got any love.
Only thing I'm partially averse to are most forms of electronica, but I'll still check anyting out.

Stuff like Yann Tierson is great, and I'm also looking for alternate recommendations for similiar artists, but what I'm specifically looking for has much more of a psychedelic pop/instrumental rock vibe.

Lack of vocals are a plus, but not necessary.

Olivia Tremor Control is one of my favorite bands ever, and they would be perfect if their instrumental tracks weren't just experimental transitions.

Check out Quiet Village, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jean Michel Jarre, Harmonia, Ozric Tentacles, Mike Oldfield, Mercury Rev, Philip Glass, Henry Cow and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Other bands I can think of that have a lot of songs like what you've described but also have vocal and/or more uptempo rockin stuff are Procol Harum, Marillion, Porcupine Tree and Tortoise. Also you mentioned that you don't like electronic, but if you change your mind, give Royksopp, Wagon Christ, Atom Heart, The Cinematic Orchestra, Cornelius and Tangerine Dream a try.

Wow man, everything's great so far, thanks.
Gotta say that I liked your drawings back when I still kept up with phiz, too.

I'm looking for some 60's-70's psychedelic pop, except with slow or mid tempo, like a
somber Brian Wilson tune.

Specifically, I'm looking for stuff with layered instrumentation, soul-influenced vocals, or otherwise songs by people who are clearly tripping balls with sitars and flutes and poo poo, and less of that 13th Floor Elevators garage rock sound.

You might like Nirvana (no, the other Nirvana), but they're maybe a bit more twee than what you're looking for. Also, Sagittarius.

Also, thanks for introducing me to Apple and Them—I dunno how I've overlooked them this long.

I am really digging Sagittarius, and Nirvana's not too bad, thanks a bunch!

Man, it's so easy for Apple and Them to get glossed over, it's such a bummer they didn't produce any more hits.

I'm just looking for music that people would listen to at that kind of party in the 60's. Any help would be appreciated.
The Ultra Lounge Series might have what you're looking for.

I'm looking for 70's era folk/singer-songwriters with a melodramatic acoustic sound.

Subjectively speaking, I am looking for songs that are subtle and mellow rather than overwrought and sappy in the vein of Neil Young, Chris Bell, and Nick Drake.

Have you already explored some James Taylor, Jim Croce or Gordon Lightfoot? They were the first ones to pop into my head but seemed like obvious suggestions.

Nope, looks like the obvious still eludes me. Thanks!

All good suggestions, thanks!

I never knew about Tom Waits's earlier stuff, I'll definitely check that out.

I'm liking everything I'm hearing so far, although specifically I am looking for songs that are a bit more low-tempo. Something in the vein of Elliot Smith.

Another thing, I tend to stay away from songs about relationships/women and prefer something a little more universal (e.g. drug abuse and depression). That's like a niche inside of a niche.

I'm not too sure if this will be stuff you're after but I thought I might as well post a few things you might enjoy, I really like all of these

Richard and Linda Thompson
Vashti Bunyan
Bridget St. John
Linda Perhacs
Sibylle Baier

Not at all what I was expecting, but very good listening.
Do you have any more recommendations?

That and "Milk and Honey" are exactly what I'm looking for.
See, the only folk I've ever been familiar with is America and Neil Young, so I've mostly just been going off of last.fm
