Farts Domino posted:I don't think there's really much wrong for seeking out totally different sounds or even wanting to musically explore the world, and the question is asked in a pretty "I'll take whatever you got" sorta way. Like I said, I don't fault him for wanting to learn about non-western music, it's the way he asked about it that struck me as tourism. He did name specific artists which was good, and could be addressed within the scope of this thread. OrganicRobot posted:How would you suggest I narrow down what I'm looking for, and how can I not seem touristy about it? Well it was an incredibly broad request and you seemed to lump unrelated things together. Maybe you could try asking for resources (online, print, etc.) that give a general overview of various musical styles throughout the world. Read through that and find specific artists or genres that interests you and then come back for recommendations (like you already did with Fela and BVSC). That way you can focus your search and better know what you actually want. Admittedly I don't know of a good resource for this myself, but other posters might.

I've been addicted to Black Moth Super Rainbow lately and want to hear similar stuff. I know some of their members have released solo albums but what else is there? I know the Octopus Project collaborated with them but on their own they're not that similar. Also, I'm looking for more tracks like Neon Indian's Ephemeral Artery. I'm not really a fan of Neon Indian's other songs or chillwave in general but I like the way this song straddles dance and rock.

I tried asking on the last page but I didn't get a response. I'm looking for psychedelic synthpop like Black Moth Super Rainbow. I already know of the members' solo work and their collab with the Octopus Project but I'm looking for more psychedelic music with analog synths, electric piano, mellotron, etc. it doesn't matter what period it's from or if it's something obvious I may have overlooked.

Okay, I promise this is the last time I'll ask here, but what's some more music that sounds like Black Moth Super Rainbow? Last.fm just recommends The Octopus Project, Tobacco, and the other projects of the band members like Power Pill Fist, Seven Fields, and Dreamend. I've listened to all of them and Tobacco and the Octopus Project collab sound close enough to what I'm looking for. I've tried Pandora but most of the artists played weren't psychedelic nor as lively rhythmically. Animal Collective came up too, and while they're psychedelic, they're too different texturally (Anco puts a lot more emphasis on vocals). To illustrate what I'm looking for, here are some songs with the characteristics I'm looking for: Melt Me, Sun Lips (a cool video too!) and Rollerdisco.

funkybottoms posted:you could try Super Furry Animals, Beta Band, or Stereolab- they all hit on a number of styles, but have stuff that sounds like what you linked. also maybe check out Silver Apples and Bruce Haack. I do like Silver Apples and I plan on checking out Haack's Electric Lucifer. Do you know of any other synth psych from the 60s and 70s? As for Stereolab, they're not bad, but they're too sleek and clean sounding, whereas I'm looking for a dusty, organic sound. For example, I was looking through similar artists on allmusic and found Sinoia Caves which nails that "organic" texture I like. Unfortunately the other songs of theirs I heard were too slow and none of them had an insistent rhythm. liquid courage posted:I'd definitely second a Super Furry Animals recommendation. Try Guerilla, Radiator and Rings Around the World. Also, Dark Days, Light Years is worth a shot as well. As for Beta Band, the Three EPs compilation is pretty solid. Thanks for reminding me of Super Furry Animals. I've heard Radiator but I haven't listened to it in a long time. Is the similarity you hear the bouncy psychedelicness or do they they use keyboards/synths more in later albums? I also listened to some Beta Band songs but I'm not sure what the connection is. slowdave posted:Solar Bears seem pretty close, but I listened to some other songs of theirs and none of them seem to have the kind of propulsive rhythm BMSR songs have. funkybottoms posted:most of the earlier synth-based music i'm familiar with is more on the experimental composer side (OHM is a good comp if that's of interest)- the only other avenue i can think of is maybe Krautrock. or, if you want a laugh, peep some Stardrive, which is pretty amazing (and has the best jacket notes ever). as for the Beta Band, i felt that the links you posted had some of the same kitchen-sink-psychedelic feel found on the album Hot Shots II.
