Hey recommendation thread, while we're still on the topic of jazz, is there anyone who could point me in the right direction for getting started on bossa nova? I've loved all of the genre I've heard and I like playing bossa nova inspired rhythms on piano when I'm jamming with friends, but I admittedly know very little about the genre. I find it to be a very relaxing style. I want to start out with some of the classics.

Are you open to ska music at all? There are plenty of bands who are more pop and rock influenced than the typical "ska punk" people are used to hearing.

I'm looking for any songs with surf guitar influences in them, like above. Doesn't necessarily have to be the same genre as the songs above, as long as it has a surf-y feel to it. Thanks.

It would be remiss not to give Dead Kennedys or Agent Orange a mention. I also really like Hotels, a post-punkish band from Seattle who have some surf influences in their songs, especially during the solos.

I'm looking for songs resambling the first 13 seconds of this one. The song is so spoiled after the intro, it starts out so stuffy, this building jazzy tension and then it just turns so lounge-y. Could recommend me anything like the first 13 seconds?

Reminds me of Dollars & Cents by Radiohead, which never lets off the tension through the entire song.

Can I get some recommendations for songs that sound similar to Jeff Mills' "The Bells"? I'm really getting into Detroit techno, but a lot of it is so harsh on the ears. What I really like about this song is that all the tones are still mechanical and cold, but they have a softness to the way they hit. Even the 909 drives but doesn't irritate.

I'm aware of and like a lot of the first generation recommendations like Gang of Four and A Certain Ratio. Didn't know about The Pop Group and a couple artists on those comps, so I'll have to check them out. As much as I like this era and genre, the production from the time was often so Martin Hannett-esque space that the groove would get lost in the reverb. You know anything that matches the sober rawness of No New York, production wise? Can be any post-punk, doesn't have to be dancey.

I'm looking for bands that could be classified as post-punk revival, but divided according to whether they adhere more to garage rock or new wave. It's a little jarring to be listening to something that could be classified as dance-punk or synth-punk and then hear something that is closer to noise rock.

In terms of newish garage rock bands, I'm thinking like: Wavves, Black Lips, FIDLAR, Jet, the Datsuns, Thee Oh Sees, Japandroids, the Subways, Wolfmother, etc.

In terms of new wave revival, I'm thinking like: Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeah's "It's Blitz!" album, The Rapture, The Maccabees, The Killers, The Editors, etc.

Any good suggestions for either of these categories would be appreciated.

It really got under my skin that music media classified bands like Interpol and the White Stripes in the same scene when they were most definitely not. I guess the Strokes were kinda in both areas. I'd even separate a lot of dance-punk groups from the post-punk revival, if we were really splitting hairs. For instance, I wouldn't lump Editors in with The Rapture and Moving Units.

Can't really help you on the garage revival end of things much but check out:

Parquet Courts - "Ducking & Dodging" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCrEMGj6Inw
Cloud Nothings - "I'm not part of me" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74TP8QhupLU

but for the post-punk stuff you touched on a lot of the big names, here's some mostly deeper cuts:

Bloc Party - "Banquet" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdkmhquF60o
The Prids - "Shadow and Shadow" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs6-6nLGddY
Hotels - "Atlantic" https://hotels.bandcamp.com/track/atlantic
The Helio Sequence - "Keep Your Eyes Ahead" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8LIwXI0EI0
Wild Nothing - "Shadow" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4xTXB30hCQ

I also made this dance-punk playlist on spotify. If that's something you don't use I can list some trax out. A lot of those bands did blur into noise rock, as you sort of mentioned:

https://open.spotify.com/user/1231267262/playlist/5WWaHERjrSehGe1iBhY6YF

EDIT: for some much more recent post-punk acts check out Viet Cong/Preoccupations and Ought. I guess I should also recommend Savages, but I don't really like them:

Viet Cong - "Unconscious Melody" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBC1h2D9rgw
Ought - "The Weather Song" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu77nn6UKao
