I really like hip-hop that follows this criteria:

1) Well used samples.

2) Lyrical content that goes beyond "We're hard motherfucks and we get that cash". I enjoy those songs sometimes, but I enjoy conscious thought, too.

3) As a primer, I enjoy Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang, and I've downloaded a couple singles off of Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox. A little help?

I recommend Isis, who have prog influences, and combine occasional death vocals with clean but not whiny vocals. Most of their albums are pretty good.

I'd like a rapper or group that hits hard like Heltah Skeltah. Mainly Rock. Deep, gravelly and a smooth flow. I youtubed Boot Camp Clik, and the songs weren't gritty enough for my taste. Maybe I just picked bad ones?

So I'm pretty strongly into punk. I enjoy many bands that are well known; Bad Religion, Face to face, Fugazi, Quicksand, Black Flag, Minutemen, Social Distortion, Converge, Propagandhi, hosed Up,Vandals Gorilla Biscuits, Rancid, etc.

Any Punk recommendations? I enjoy punk with a strong sense of hooks and melody that doesn't feel like it's pandering. Please don't reccommend green Day or Offspring.

I've been familiar with m83 for a while, but their new album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming REALLY grabbed my attention, particularly Midnight City (good lookin' out to whoever nominated it for album of the year in the NMD thread). Any recommendations for similar acts? I really like shoegaze so no need to recommend based on that aspect of their act, but any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking for music with a relaxed/light sound and soft-spoken female vocalists. Indie Rock (?) with guitars is O.K., but I also enjoy harps, piano, and violin. While searching through similar genres is possible, the voice matters a lot more than the exact style of instrumental music, and that's a lot harder to search for. Donna Lewis is, in my limited musical knowledge, the quintessence of what I'm looking for in this regard.

French artists are also acceptable, as I am comfortable enough with the language to enjoy it (I adore Carla Bruni's work).

Examples:
Donna Lewis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZc6bMGgp3E
Lindsay Foote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFkS7SdQzKY
Frente!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2sPV7Nm148

Also, I am looking for music similar to Atmosphere, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Immortal Technique. The use of an orchestral background with hip-hop lyrics is amazing, and I'm having trouble finding more of it.

For lady folk, try Mazzy Star.

To the guy asking about worker's lament type stuff: try some Billy Bragg, especially his stuff from the 80's when he was dealing with Margaret Thatcher's stupid rear end.

This might seem rather nebulous, so bear with me here.

Recently I've discovered the album "Spiderland" by Slint and found out about its' "unsung classic" status. So I guess what I'm asking is if there are other records from the 1990's that have this label. They don't have to sound like Slint (I'd prefer they not, if just for variety's sake), but if anybody could make suggestions along the vein of "record that should have been a bigger deal and is now considered a classic" from that period, I'd be rather grateful.

I know you meant to write Laughing Stock, but for one brief moment I was hopeful there was somehow a Talk Talk album I missed.

I need more melodic metal bands with catchy riffs and great vocals. Like Dio or Bruce Dickinson great, if that's not too much to hope for. If they're less dumb than your average metal band, that's probably a plus too.

Try Baroness. Strong riffs, good singing.

I focused less on the operatic vocals (which is fairly rare) and more on the "great riffs, not dumb" part. Plus everybody should give Baroness a try, they're pretty drat good.

Right.

So I just heard "Grace" by Jeff Buckley in full for the first time. Wow. Where to go from here?

Also, thanks for the recommendations from my previous query about unheralded classics; although I was amused at Declan's list because I already had half of it (still good suggestions though).

I'm looking for lo-fi folk, stuff that sounds so stripped down it starts sounding less like country and more like garage punk or black metal (production-wise; not really interested in goth per se). Some stuff that nails what I'm looking for is Shakey Graves, Those Poor Bastards, Tomahawk, and Hank III.

You should check out King Buzzo's (of the Melvins) new solo album, This Machine Kills Artists. It's streaming here http://exclaim.ca/MusicVideo/ClickHear/king_buzzo-this_machine_kills_artists_album_stream

This might be a bit tough, and I apologize for any vagueness.

What I'm looking for are records that are a pretty weird but good and musically accessible. A recent example of something I'd put in this category is the record Jello Biafra made with Mojo Nixon, Prairie Home Invasion. Tom Waits would be another example of weird but ultimately really enjoyable for me. As would Roky Erickson. I'd also put, funnily enough, considering it was just recommended, Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 in that category.

So, I enjoy reggae and dub. But I'm not a huge fan of Bob Marley. Here's a list of what I do like, perhaps you could point me in the next direction:

Chaka Demus and Pliers
Jimmy Cliff
Toots and the Maytals
Prince Buster
The Selecter (UK)
Desmond Dekker
Alton Ellis
Junior Kelly
Collie Buddz
Barrington Levy
Lee "Scratch" Perry
Kardinal Offishal (I know he's mostly a rapper, but he has a strong reggae and dancehall vibe to his stuff)
Junior Murvin

Any thoughts? Compilations are appreciated in particular, if you know of some that would click with these artists.

Just go through Soul Jazz's and Pressure Sounds' catalogues for compilations that sound good (paying heed what terms like "rocksteady" and "deejay" mean). I wouldn't say there's anything definite to pick. Maybe Soul Jazz's Studio One Classics.

Also The Wailers made some great, great, great records and "Bob Marley is whatever" is just a weird phase that people go through.
