Somewhat recently I became a big fan of Ayreon, and found I really like my music to have a story. What are some other bands or albums that have an over-arching story with recognizable characters and a plot? I like metal of most kinds but really I can enjoy anything with a melody. I've also been discovering a new found love of Broadway musicals, to give a little perspective.

Hospice by The Antlers is an album that tells the story of a hospice worker who falls in love with a dying patient. It's an allegory for an abusive relationship too. It's not metal though, it'd be more in the vein of Bon Iver. De-Loused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta is also pretty good and probably more up your street musically.

After just finding out that The Tunics broke up last December, I'm looking for a band similar to them to fill the void until the lead singer's solo stuff really gets off the ground, because I absolutely love his voice and writing. They're a British indie rock band who sound like this.

Also just in general I'm always looking for more to listen to. I'm currently listening to a lot of Brown Bird (genre ?????), 65daysofstatic (instrumental math/post rock), Polinski (part of 65dos, electronic), Blue Sky Black Death (instrumental trip/hip hop).

TIA for any recommendations.

Maybe Cage the Elephant? I really liked their first album a few years ago, can't speak for their second though

You mentioned Japan so I'm sure you have heard of Nujabes, but on the outside chance you haven't

As for pogo I'm not sure of his/her genre because they make all their music by remixing soundclips from whatever film/show the song is about.

Been getting back into Tom Waits and Nick Cave, especially Orphans, Brawlers and Bastards and Murder Ballads. I've gone through both of their discographies and was wondering if anyone knew of any other artists that do similar stuff? I especially like the dark folk/country stuff that they do. Found a band recently called Those Poor Bastards that are keeping me going, but could really use another fix of delicious gothic Americana.

Let Love In is the best Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album. Checkout Grinderman, they're Cave's other band.

I just heard Tegan and Sara's take on "Please don't find another love", anyone have recommendations?

Dillon, Lykke Li, and BOY sound like they'd be right up your alley.

You are 100% correct, all of these rec's were right in my wheel house. Have you heard the Naked and the Famous' Hearts Like Ours, if so, any rec's?

Massive TNAF fan, saw them live last year. Not sure about that specific song but The XX are a very similar band. That same kind of pop/dance mix with a lead female and male vocalist.

Phantogram are a fairly similar sound, but they're only good not great in my opinion.

The Olympia in Dublin, they were excellent.

I've been listening to the soundtrack to the UK drama UTOPIA non-stop the past few days. It's totally different to what I normally listen to so I have no idea what genre or artists to look at. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. I could only find the full album online so I'll give the timestamps of my three favourite tracks on it. I can understand if that's too irritating for the thread to bother with.

that noised out punk sounds really good, I like that Yuck track. Gonna check it out too.

What would you call the guitar effect at the start of this:

ignoring the rest, though its fine, im interested in things that sound like/use the stuttered guitar at the start. Not so much a genre thing, just wondering if anyone else uses a similar effect/sound, esp on that acoustic guitar sound.

Also, is there anyone else that sounds like Sleigh Bells?

Blood Red Shoes are kind of similar, male and female vocalists

I need a tear jerker for something. What's the most 'circling-the-drain' track you all know of? I'm not much of a music person so I pretty much top out with Arcade Fire's My Body Is A Cage and that's not good enough.

Hospice by The Antlers

It's a concept album about a hospice worker who falls in love with a terminally ill patient, incredibly sad. Probably my favourite album though.

Also out of this list the ones I recognise are very good
