I'm looking for some more glitchy music kind of like Girl Talk's Unstoppable (although not neccessarily mashups, I've already checked the Girl Talk thread) or 65daysofstatic's Unrealased/Unreleasable stuff. I like Aphex Twin/Amon Tobin/Flashbulb/Enduser/Venetian Snares but I'm looking for something a bit different. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the recommendations - I've got a lot to check out. I'm generally not too keen on the reggae-ish stuff, although Cardopusher was pretty cool. I actually don't mind the more chilled out stuff, and the Flying Lotus stuff is pretty good on first listen.

Electromeca is probably my favourite of the stuff so far though, exactly what I was looking for.

And yes, I do like a fair amount of IDM but the reason I posted was to try and find glitchy stuff that wasn't IDM - and so far I've got a lot of ideas.

edit (ironically): in case anyone else is looking for similar stuff, someone else recommended ediT to me, and his stuff is pretty awesome - Crying Over Pros for no reason is chilled out but really cool glitchy stuff while Certified Air Raid Material is synth heavy stuff with stop-start beats that seems sort of like a cross between mainstream d&b and hiphop.

I guess the common trait I notice is that they're usually centered around piano/organ/string instruments, or completely orchestrated.
So yeah, I'll listen to anything that's recommended, regardless of genre or artist. Thanks!

This song in particular sounds like what you're looking for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jxvy7W9bqo&feature=related (Radio Protector by 65daysofstatic from their One Time For All Time album)

If you like that, you might want to check out the whole album, although this is the most orchestral song on there - the rest is more guitar orientated.

There's another, more specific request I'd like to make, and that's "hard pop". It's hard for me to describe, but it's a sort of aggressive electronic pop music that seems to be a British sort of thing.

Maybe a bit more on the electronica side, but if you want pop vocals with the kind of backing you describe you might like Hot Chip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs9NgGZkErU

Laurie Anderson is weird as gently caress and I love it. Anybody know much about her? Apparently she's pretty famous in experimental/electronic circles.

A friend just made a mix for me with her song "Word of Mouth" on it. I've never heard anything like it. Does anybody have any info/further recommendations on this woman?

You should probably start with Big Science, it's her debut and as far as I know her most well known album, and very good. O Superman, her most famous song, is on it, but I'm also a big fan of From The Air, Walking & Falling and Let X=X. The only youtube I could find of O Superman has some guy miming to it, but the audio is fine so here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPIvGcUybBE

I'm having a hard time finding bands like Disturbed.

I like the moderately heavy theme, with intelligible lyrics with even some funk-like riffs thrown in on occasion, while staying upbeat.

I suppose it's rock/metal or somesuch.

Edit: Also, I'm a complete NMD moron. Please forgive me.

You could try Soil. They've gone downhill after changing singers, but Scars and Redefine are good albums. I'd check out Redefine, first. Here's a couple of songs:

Please tell me, by the way, if I am completely wrong about what the sound I'm describing here. I'm terrible at describing music.

I think what you're possibly looking for is Shoegaze http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoegazing

The most important Shoegaze album is generally considered to be My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and is probably the best place to start.

I'm looking for more downtempo, ambient, IDM, or lounge music. Any trip-hop artists you think fit are more than welcome, as well as anything you generally consider stony/trippy AND relaxed. Artists I've enjoyed recently/in this category are Waldeck, DJ Food, the Artificial Intelligence series, Thievery Corporation, Nicola Conte, Prefuse 73, Boards of Canada (will always be in love with BoC), The Herbaliser, DJ Shadow...Thanks!

I have a feeling I've posted this recently, but edIT's Certified Air Raid Material might be worth checking out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXV0MswjKOg

His other album is much less relaxed though. You also might want to try Wax Poetic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFL8QZa0fRY

I'm looking for some good nautical/ocean themed albums to listen to. I don't really want any gimmicky stuff like Alestorm, but metal is fine.

Isis's Oceanic? Depends how you deal with (sparse) growly vocals but aside from the fact it has an ocean theme anyway, Weight and From Sinking in particular always make me think of the sea.

looking for progressive rock help.

i'm buying a prog rock cd for my brother, and I know he really likes dream theater a lot. i have no idea about this genre, but i've been looking into it and i think Porcupine Tree might be a good band to pick from? they have tons of albums though, which one would be best for a dream theater fan? or is there another band that he might like more?

help!

Depends on what he likes about Dream Theater. If he's a fan of the more melodic, song oriented elements, In Absentia might be best. If he prefers the long songs and solos, one of the later albums like Deadwing or Arriving Somewhere.

So I'm looking for something. I listen to a lot of metal. Mostly progressive technical stuff (Symphony X, Dream Theater, Leprous, etc) and a lot of death metal, but I'm looking for something less screamy.

In case you don't know them, Haken's Visions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfbvwMpIAKg and basically anything by Devin Townsend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaKvwsl2rmw

You could also try some instrumental stuff - Russian Circles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaKvwsl2rmw or Pelican https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zukO1h11hrM maybe.

Now that I think about it, I'd like to hear some music that sounds like it would perfectly fit coming out of Maynard James Keenan's mouth. I haven't had a lot of time to take a look at these suggestions, but maybe it would help narrow it down to: poo poo that sounds kinda like Tool/MJK I guess?? Katatonia from above is a good fit, for example.

Karnivool's Sound Awake is the album you want: Simple Boy for example.

Can anyone reccomend more music like mind.in.a.box's R.E.T.R.O. and the Frozen Synapse and FarCry 3: Blood Dragon OSTs? Moody, kind of beaty cyberpunkish elecrtronica basically. Doesn't have to be computer gamey but it can be.

I used to listen to a lot of IDM-ish music like Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin, Ginormous, The Flashbulb and Venetian Snares. I recently heard Trentemoller's Last Resort which reminded me how much I like that stuff, have there been any new artists or big releases I should check out from the last couple of years? Also anything with an early Progidy vibe would work.

A friend of mine is looking for inspiration for some concept art he's been put in charge of creating for a videogame.

Without going into too much detail (confidentiality and what not), the setting seems to be equal parts eutopian and dystopian, with a healthy dose of H.P. Lovecraft. Pretty broad reach, surely, but each can get pretty specific.

Does anyone have any acts or albums (or even single songs) that would match any of these? So far he's said artists like Gazelle Twin, Fever Ray, and Woodkid have done it, and he's asked specifically for "tribal beats."

Thanks!

This might be a weird request but can anyone recommend something like this track but a bit less ambient? Especially when the simple melody kicks in around 2:10. I really like the vibe, the sort of modern/near future isolated and introspective but somewhat optimistic feel, but I'd want a bit more going on - a drum loop or some more progression or something to actually listen to it often. It reminds me a little bit of the Mirror's Edge soundtrack or a less dramatic mind.in.a.box but I like the vibe of this more.
