Vince McMahon posted:Bit of an unusual one: I'm trying to find something like this. I've heard it described as 'jaunty jazz' but I don't have a clue where to look for something similar. Any input is appreciated. Not sure about that jaunty term. Its influenced by big band swing jazz for sure. I'd check out Dizzy Gillespie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtG5m7P56vk and Duke Ellington http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNAxjeaT0Kk Two totally different musicians from different periods of Jazz, but the 30 Rock theme has elements of both I'd say. If you're a fan of swing and have a record player, you're in luck because thrift stores across America have piles and piles of the stuff.

Do you literally have no clue about jazz? What you mentioned is a bad jazz version of a Bach piece. Check these out: Miles Davis - Round Midnight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwtN7WuOEoA Hank Mobley - Recado Bossa Nova: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEh-QvCJYi4 Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxX0-OaI5j0 All very intro level jazz stuff. These 6 Kinks albums from '66 to '71 are amazing and picking up any of them would be a good idea: 1966 Face to Face 1967 Something Else by The Kinks 1968 The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society 1969 Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) 1970 Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One 1971 Muswell Hillbillies Everybody has a different favorite among these, my favorite is Village Green. Early Kinks stuff is like most other British Invasion bands in that there are a bunch of different releases in the UK and US that have the most of the same songs but in different orders and stuff. The best bet there is picking up one of the reissued CDs with like 30 tracks on them. Kinks stuff post-1971 starts to get pretty lovely and I wouldn't recommend much of it. e: If you really want to dig into their catalog the most tolerable post Muswell album is Misfits. The Ghana Soundz comps on Soundway are afrofunky goodness. These are different from Ghana Special, that's more straight highlife and Ghana Soundz is more western influenced funk. HAI mentioned Vampisoul, they do some really good African music stuff but tend to focus on single artist reissues. The Tony Allen 3xLP they reissued is particularly great. For western funk, this King Label funk comp they did is amazing: http://www.vampisoul.com/detail_cd.asp?referencia=83 The Funky 16 Corners is in my opinion one of the greatest comps ever: http://www.stonesthrow.com/funky16/corners.html Can You Dig It? I know you say you're looking for more P-funk but how much of the funk staples have you explored? Isley Brothers, James Brown, Sly. That sort of thing. Also I'm not sure why you're ruling out compilations right away, there's a lot of amazing one hit wonders on comps and 70s soundtracks. Funk was much more 45s than an album genre.
