Job opening for Desktop/Helpdesk Support in Iselin, NJ. Two minutes off exit 130 on the Parkway, five minutes off exit 10 on the Turnpike. We're five minutes from the Metropark NJ Transit station.

Craigslist posting is here: http://cnj.craigslist.org/tch/1563221860.html Or you can email me at mjpbyron at gmail dot com with questions or resumes. Just a heads-up, the CL posting goes to the HR recruiter, who is a good guy but it isn't me, so don't say you saw this through Something Awful, lol.

You can get the details on what's needed on the technical side on the CL posting. As for the kind of person we're looking for, you don't have to be a complete support pushover but you don't have to know everything about everything, either. The company is Maidenform, the bra and shapewear people. We had an extremely good year even with ~*~the economy~*~ and we're growing. The position is filling someone who left the company, and there's room to grow into skills we need as much as there's room for someone with experience as well.

Recent grads with some IT experience are encouraged to apply, as are seasoned pros.

Salary range is mid-40s to low-50s DOE. Benefits package is very, very good - health/dental after 30 days, free vision plan, 401k after 6 months with 4% match at 50%, the position is NON-EXEMPT and you ARE eligible for OT. The on-call rotation has you on-call once every six to eight weeks, and there's rarely more than three or four calls during the week. There has never been a call between the hours of 10 PM-7 AM so you don't have to worry about midnight HALP I LOST MY PASSWORD calls.

As long as you're willing to learn, I'm willing to teach. The boss is a very, very easygoing and a great guy. We run a Windows shop with about 300ish people in the main office, a few hundred terminal users in our distribution center, 50-80ish field sales people over VPN, and our New York office where the executives often live. We have someone in NYC maybe once a month or so to fix a few problems at once and show the IT flag.

The job is really a good place; the SA forums aren't blocked at least. Generous employee discounts if you need to buy womens' underwear.

Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns. I'll scroll back through these pages and reach out to any potential locals. Email again is mjpbyron at gmail dot com.

Just wanted to note that I'm still open to any resumes people want to submit from the posting I had up. We're still looking at resumes and the process is a bit slow due to the HR folks we use being moved to part-time status.

My experience: Nine years total working with computers, six years in the workforce. I was a tech support volunteer in college from 2000-2004, I worked at the college help desk from 2001-2004, and I've been in escalating roles since 2004. I started out doing proprietary software support along with heavy TCP/IP, Windows 2000/XP, lab information systems (basically Unix servers/terminal clients) and moving up to supporting Wintel platforms, MS Office 2003/2007, Exchange 2003 and 2007, Blackberries and BES, Win2K3 and R2, Win2k8, Vista and 7. Activesync-based mobile devices, printers and hardware, etc.

What I'm looking for: A job where I can start the transition from full-time desktop support to full-time Windows sysadmin work. I'm mostly interested in messaging support. Even if it's just desktop support with a lot of server maintenance included, that's fine too.

Where I live: New Brunswick/Edison, NJ and moving back to northern NJ.

Where I'm looking: The Edison, NJ area but primarily Manhattan. I am not averse to the NYC commute.

When I can start: Within two weeks of accepting an offer unless I get PILONed out upon giving notice.

Requirements: High $50k range. Basic benefits (health and dental). I'm flexible on bennies/perks.

Can be reached via: this thread, PM, email (mjpbyr0n at gmail dot c0m, replace the 0s with the letter O)

All right, so my old job has been posted. This is a great role for someone who's done helpdesk or basic IT work for 3 years and wants to do a little more. Advancement - not sure how much is going to lead to other positions, as they only have one network/systems admin and the company is not necessarily the highest tech. However, it's an amazing work environment with really nice users and a great place to study up on the basics.

Here's the details from the posting, feel free to PM me with links to your resume in Word .doc format or email them to me directly at mjpbyron at gmail dot com.

The BS in comp sci is definitely not a requirement as mine was in political science.

Shifts are 8-5 but they might start rotating 7-4, 8-5, 9-6. On-call is once every 8-9 weeks or so. Big plusses are experience with Macs, Office 2007, some basic Server 2k3 admin work, etc. It's in Iselin, NJ.

I am definitely happy to answer questions, of course. Don't hesitate to PM or email.

Reporting to the Helpdesk Manager, the Desktop Support Specialist is responsible for problem recognition, research, isolation, resolution and follow-up for helpdesk user problems. Also, this individual supports hardware inventory control plus software and hardware upgrades. Primary responsibilities include:
Assist end users with technical support. (onsite or remote via phone)
Respond to requirements/helpdesk tickets in a timely manner.
On call 24 x 7 for emergencies and outages.
Participate in after hours support and support rotations.
Desktop\laptop hardware and software installations, reconfigurations.
Knowledgeable with file backups/restores procedures.
Maintain functional skills in MAC (move/add/change) for company desktops and networks.
Contact software and hardware vendors to request service regarding defective products, parts.
Communicate problem resolution progress and status to appropriate parties.
Analyze/evaluate incident reports and make recommendations to reduce incident rate.
Research work order trends to recommend training and reduce call volume.
Identify and isolate potential software and hardware issues quickly in order to prevent end user outages.
Assist with network and hardware upgrades as well as assist in evaluating new & emerging technologies.
Meet customer and user expectations (responsiveness, follow-up, courtesy, professionalism).
Develop and document problem resolution process.
Perform other duties as assigned and as relevant to the position.

Eligibility requirements: BS in Computer science or related discipline. 3+ years work experience (or equivalent work/training equivalent). Must be experienced in the following: computer support, helpdesk environments, call tracking software, advanced desktop and laptop troubleshooting, 2nd and 3rd level end user support, Ms-office 2003/2007 Suites, Symantec Virus protection, Windows XP and Windows 7. Proficient in Networking, TCP/IP, Cisco Voip, VPN’s and wireless. Expert with Ghost, SMS and cloning techniques, as well as troubleshooting remote user’s problems. Knowledgeable with routers, switches and cabling. Good verbal and customer relationship skills.

My company just had a vacancy and I can honestly say that despite a few shortcomings (no casual Fridays, health plan is meh at best but dental is done by reimbursement and costs way less than a regular dental plan, only the big six federal holidays off) it's a really amazing bunch of people to work with. We're a managed service provider in Manhattan, conveniently located almost equidistant between Port Authority and Penn Station.

The guys and girls I work with are very good technical-minded people, we're all very laid-back and high-energy, and we're not evil corporate or anything like that. I'm not sure if the job is going to be more phone and remote support or more onsite support, or if they'll blend it like the previous incumbent had (90% of us are blended between onsites and phone/remote, I and one other person are phone/remote-only) but it's a good place to be. We do have Transitcheck for up to the current $230 government pre-tax maximum, decent vacation/sick/personal day allotment, and there's no real limit to what you can bring to the table or pick up on the job.

Bonuses paid for passed cert exams, reimbursements for training materials and exam fees, etc.

We're 97% PC and 3% Mac. Lots of Win 7 knowledge to go with XP. We run Exchange save for one or two clients who have Lotus Notes, but we're not too heavily involved with that. Lots of knowledge on networking, printers, MS Office 2003, 2007, and 2010 will be very good to have. We use Sonicwall and Cisco VPN clients.

Please send resumes or questions to mjpbyron at gmail dot com. There's lots of good times to be had at this office - we really do work hard but also play hard. I know there's a posting out there somewhere and will put a link here once I track it down.

Who are we?
A managed services provider in Manhattan. We provide IT services for a broad range of companies and industries, from three-person trading and import operations to nationwide enterprise consumer products manufacturing and distribution. Desktop support and helpdesky stuff are going to be a bunch of what you do, but there's plenty of systems administration work that you'll be doing too. Lots of VMware, Exchange, and Cisco VPN/Sonicwall.

Where are we?
The Garment District of Manhattan, between Port Authority and Penn Station. Easily accessible from either as well as mass transit.

What are we looking for?
Help desk, sysadmin types - if you have done your time as helpdesk and desktop support, and have some server knowledge, this is a great way to expand your knowledge. Gotta be good on the phones and presentable in person, as the position will have you going onsite occasionally.

We're 90% Windows, 10% Mac products - mostly Outlook/Entourage issues and the occasional Iphone/Ipad email setup or wireless network issue on that end. The majority of our servers are still on 2k3 but we're putting 2k8 out wherever possible. XP and 7 desktops with a very small Vista smattering.

How do I apply?
Forward me your resume at mjpbyron at gmail dot com or PM me a link to your Word or Acrobat resume.

Anything else I should know?
The usual disclaimers about all manner of end user skill sets apply. I've traded reminiscences about DOS with clients, had to troubleshoot database applications coded in Foxpro, rescued Blackberries, recovered hard drives, migrated mailboxes, managed SMTP relays, toyed with staticing out DHCP leases, all kinds of stuff.

You're limited only by what you want to take on; ambition and desire to learn new skills are definitely encouraged.

Training materials are covered as are cert exam costs. You get a $100 bonus for every cert exam you pass.

This is a really good working environment. We work hard, but we're all very laid back. There is near zero stupid corporate BS. It's a great place to be. We're growing a lot and this position is a newly-created one.

Biz cas dress code, no casual Fridays unfortunately, but it's a good place to be. Health, dental, vision, 401k. 10 vacation days, 5 sick, 3 personal, the six big federal holidays off.

We do have transit reimbursement for commuters and for any onsites. Quarterly bonuses for overtime and projects.

Edit: there is no relocation budget and the position is going to require in-person interviews. I don't think they'll mind if you have to move here for it or fly out/take the train for interviews, but there won't be compensation for it. :-(

Edit 2: If you've got a Help Desk background I'd love to hear from you as well!

Just reposting since we're still definitely looking for qualified people. At this point, I think we can make a case for someone who wants to move up from a less technical role (e.g. if you've done your time on a help desk or desktop support but haven't yet had the change to dcpromo, build a server and rack it, etc.), but we do need someone with the soft skills - we really can't have another Nick Burns type that sounds like he hates the users on the phone. You can hate on them all you like so long as nobody on the other end of the phone overhears you, though. There is no need to sound like a perky I-love-all-life customer service drone but you need to have real patience, the ability to ask good leading questions, the ability to work with difficult people (the users, not your co-workers), and listen to what they say.

Feel free to PM or email with questions if you have 'em, I'll do my best to answer.

(Can an admin kindly remove the position I was at in NJ? It's been a while since I was there)

Got a new position that's been created at my current job. It's not so high on the engineering scale but it's going to be great if you have some lower level IT experience or knowledge and want to build on that knowledge. It's primarily lower-level resolution skills at its core - you'd be responsible for answering calls and emails, documenting the problem, and escalating it to the appropriate tier and engineer, but there's plenty of room to resolve if you know what it is.

Monster posting with more details: http://jobview.monster.com/Help-Desk-Coordinator-Job-New-York-NY-106522101.aspx

Who are we?
A managed services provider in Manhattan. We provide IT services for a broad range of companies and industries, from three-person trading and import operations to nationwide enterprise consumer products manufacturing and distribution. Our support ranges from two-machine desktop only shops to complex networks with MPLS, multiple VLANs, you name it.

Where are we?
The Garment District of Manhattan, between Port Authority and Penn Station. Easily accessible from either as well as mass transit.

What are we looking for?
Two Helpdesk Coordinators - I won't lie, this is an experience-builder and one for a person who has a good customer service orientation but a skill set that focuses on the technical. You'll be taking calls and emails, escalating them, but there's always room for growth.

How do I apply?
PM me with your resume or email it to mjpbyron at gmail dot com.

Anything else I should know?
This position doesn't involve late hours or coverage - you will not be asked to do any kind of after hours, on-call, or otherwise. The company is very big on growing talent and huge on certs, they love certs of all kinds so long as you know what you're talking about.

We also just put into place a bonus structure, pegged to annual revenue, which supplements the previous bonus structure of project time and overtime. (We're salaried but anything above 40 hours a week is time and a half as a quarterly bonus)

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions - I don't lurk this thread much but I do respond quickly to PMs and email.

Both positions have been filled, one with a goon! If we have any future openings I'll be sure to post 'em up.

We have a vacancy to fill in the role above for one of my co-workers who is moving out of state!

quote:

a leading provider of managed IT services to SMB and enterprise businesses in the New York area, is seeking an experienced Level 2 Desktop Support Engineer to join our engineering team to serve our growing client base. This person will provide remote and onsite end user desktop support to a subset of our clients running Windows and Exchange environments.

Requirements:
Candidates must have strong working knowledge of MS Office 2007/2010, MS Windows XP/Windows7 & 2003/2008 Server, Blackberry handhelds w/ BES server, VPN, network and connectivity troubleshooting. Mac experience a plus.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Enthusiastic individual with professional appearance and strong desire to provide quality support and customer service.

Details above are taken from a Monster posting, but I'll probably be able to kick your resume forward if you're a good match. I've placed three people here through referrals. Also posted in the Google Doc.

This is a great role for someone who's done their time at desktop and/or help desk for a year or so and wants to be in a place that rewards getting your certs, gives you new challenges, and can deal with end users well. We can't have a Nick Burns but we don't use scripts to govern your every interaction with clients.

It's a great place despite the dress code. If you know what you're doing and can fix something, usually all you need to do is notify the person in charge of the account and make sure they're kosher with it. I've gotten enough knowledge here to finish my 2k3 MCSA and get my MCITP: SA. The salary is decent for the work.

There is no relocation budget but if you want to move to NY/NJ, I can point you in the right direction for decent areas in which to live and exist.

I'm more than happy to answer questions or forward resumes. Contact info is above, or you can PM me.

Okay, so while we're still hiring for the role at my job that's helpdesk/sysadmin, goons should be well advised that the new manager has a whiteboard which currently bears the following at the top, in red, for all to see:

It's not the strongest species that will live, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to chainge. -Darwin

(Emphasis in the original)

Goons be advised that while I'm more than happy to submit you, you'll have a boss who seriously and unironically does stuff like this. I leave that to you to judge for yourselves without comment from me. I'm available via email or PM if you have questions.

Hey goons! My work space is hiring a software developer!

Who we are: The Segal Company, an actuarial and benefits consulting firm with around 1500 employees across the US.
Where we are: This position is in New York City: specifically 34th between 8th and 9th, easily commutable from Port Authority Bus Terminal, Penn Station, and pretty much all major subway lines.
Job title: Software Developer. All these details come from the internal hiring request:

quote:

The Software Developer will develop and maintain enterprise software primarily in support of our investment-consulting affiliate. In addition, the Software Developer may be called upon to contribute to projects for other business units. The Software Developer will work closely with analysts and will be tasked with working through the entire systems development life cycle, including requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, and deployment.

Candidates should have a BS degree in computer science or related degree and 2 - 4 years of experience developing enterprise class Web-based and Client-Server applications in a Microsoft environment. Candidates should possess a strong knowledge of Microsoft platform including: Object-oriented programming; .Net; JavaScript; Crystal Reports; Active Reports; and SQL-Server. Qualified candidates will have experience working with Visual Studio, Team Foundation Server, and SQL Management Studio. Candidates must have excellent communication and analytical skills along with proven teamwork experience.

Why you'd want to work here: The workspace is very stable as is the environment. Actuarial and benefits consulting isn't exactly high finance or law firm tension. I work here in systems administration and I've found that the people are intelligent, especially in the IT sphere. There's zero nepotism and tons of collegiality; the engineers aren't ivory-tower jerks and the VP of my department, as well as the VP of the applications department, are very nice guys and not jerkish in any means. The hours are REAL EIGHT HOUR DAYS - as in your shift is seven hours and an hour's lunch. 8-4, 9-5, etc. This almost doesn't happen anymore.

The benefits packages are amazing and comprehensive. There's an actual pension as well as a 4% match 401k. Full health, dental, vision, Rx drug, you name it. 10 days paid vacation, 3 personal days, as many sick days as you need. Extra options for STD and LTD above and beyond and in addition to NY state disability. Employee MS licensing for personal use. Education benefits if you want to go for an advanced degree in your field. It's a really great suite of benefits. Lots of lifers in this company.

Why you wouldn't want to work here: There's not much dynamic growth. I am not a developer so I really wouldn't know what to say, but as a sysadmin, I'm kinda stunned how little impetus there is to start migrating away from 32-bit installs of Server 2003 R2. The testing and approval process for IT operational stuff could be construed as a bit onerous - but I think it's a lot better than going cowboy. There's plenty of testing to be done for MS patches. I'd imagine there's a similar process for developers, but I can inquire if there are questions.

Salary: Competitive. I got a decent boost coming on board. They don't pay crap for massive work. It is salaried, but they don't demand excessive after-hours and weekend work. Besides, it's a real 8-hour day, which definitely does not suck.

PM me with your resume and I'll get it right to the HR people. I had to go through two rounds before they made an offer, mostly because one of the hiring managers had odd availability. If you don't have PMs, you can email me at mjpbyron at gmail dot com.

To your question, MJP, The closest support office to NYC is in Herndon, Virginia. However lots of people telecommute and we have a few people who are 100% remote and come into the office once or twice a quarter. YMMV but I suggest applying and seeing what happens. If you are good enough and rock the interview they might hook you up.

Edit: disregard, I am nowhere near experienced enough - but this sounds awesome for someone who has some networking experience beyond the MCSA level.

Not my company, but a role I wasn't interested in is open with a company called Recruitics in NYC: http://www.indeed.com/promo/url?url...99rv1u7p0n1s6a0

Basically, it was described as 70% helpdesk, 30% sysadmin/IT manager. Seems like a good role if you've got experience and a cert or two and want out of helpdesk.

The guy I talked to mentioned that it's around 150 users, growing to 200, across 12 locations in the US. They plan on growing, and he mentioned that while it does involve helpdesking, they may look to hire a pure helpdesk person after 12 months or so. YMMV, grain of salt, etc. but I figured I'd circulate the posting in case people are interested.

Apply via the link or if you prefer, PM me your email; I'll forward your name/contact info directly to the guy.

Salary range is $70-75k but they could flex up to $90k for the right candidate.

A recruiter approached me or others I might know for referrals to this role. It's located in Tribeca on Broadway just below Canal. I'm in a part of Jersey that has lousy train service so this would be a crappy commute for me but maybe it'll do better for someone else.

I am told that the client will not let compensation get in the way of the right candidate - salary is open, so go nuts.

PM me if you're interested, I'll get you the recruiter's contact details.

Our helpdesk guy is likely on the way out. HR gave me the go-ahead to send in resumes of people I know that are on the market and reliable.

Who we are: A logistics company. Specifically, produce truckload matchmakers - an office full of folks who do nothing but call truckers and get them to take loads of produce from point A to point B.
Where we are: Northern NJ, just a minute or two off of Route 3 on 17 North.

---

Job title: Help desk analyst
What we want: A basic help desk role, this is a good place for someone's 2nd or 3rd job. We're a VDI environment, heavily locked-down, so an understanding of Windows desktop applications, a little Word/Excel, is good to have. We're fully into Chrome and Gmail, Citrix Xendesktop 7, and a lot of line-of-business apps. We'll train you on what you need to know for them since it's unlikely you've encountered them outside of the logistics industry. Document scanning/indexing application understanding is a big plus. We run outsourced VoIP so a basic understanding of VoIP principles is a plus as well. Printers, knowing how to handle extremely non-technical (but very nice and friendly) users, and knowing how to keep your tickets updated and moving onward are must-haves. Gotta be able to wrangle vendors since we do a lot of work with third-party support for applications.

As long as you're a good balance of technical and service skills (the incumbent is wonderful at service but lousy at tech) you'll do great.

---

Why you'd want to work here: The company has a very laid-back, easygoing culture. We're not shorts and sandals, but nobody's going to give you crap if you wear jeans on a non-Friday. There is VERY low turnover and people are very keen on growing from within the company. The IT department would be the applicant, me (sysadmin) and my boss (IT manager) who is trying to delegate more and more responsibilities so he can get to a better managerial situation. You'll have good communication across the board, no backstabbery, realistic expectations, hourly pay, 15 PTO days, decent benefits, and since we deal in produce, occasionally we might get a trucker with a load of produce that the client didn't want anymore so you can take home a box of avocados or mozzarella sticks. There is a companywide bonus opportunity. If you want to move upwards I am happy to mentor in the stuff I do (MCSA/VCP level) and I am more than happy to share any knowledge you want to learn which I could help with. The role is non-exempt so you are eligible for OT if there's a reasonable need for it, or to make up time if you have an appointment during the day.

Why you wouldn't want to work here: IT is very much a cost center and we don't get to spend a lot of money outside of vital infrastructure stuff. On-call is once every three weeks since there's only three of us. Working remote isn't really an option. Salary will be within market rate and depend on your experience. The bonus depends on companywide quotas and has no metric for IT, so if the business doesn't sell X amount of truckloads we only get Y% of the bonus. Merit increases are probably not on the table, and there's no word about a cost of living increase. There are three or four extremely high-visibility users out of the entire company of 70, and sometimes it's a bit disproportionate.

Salary: DOE, realistically probably in the mid to high 40k range. I think the company compromised on quality to get our current guy in at a lower salary, and he didn't pan out, so I can make a real case to bring in someone skilled.

PM me for info.

40k in NJ is a tough-sell granted it's laid back helpdesk but you'd make the same in the Midwest without East Coast rent.

Mid to high 40s is doable. You'd be renting a room but it'd be in a decent place - Lyndhurst, Nutley, the better parts of Clifton, just to name a few - but you'd still have enough to put into the 401k.

Captain Monkey posted:

If there was the possibility of remote at that position I know quite a few people who'd throw in. As it is, living in Jersey at 40-50k sounds terrible, especially for a 2nd or 3rd job.

Believe me, if they were open to IT working remote I'd be pushing hard for it. Given that we're 100% in the cloud there's no need for me as the sysadmin to be present, but not every business is progressive in their telecommuting policies. This one isn't.

The role is helpdesk and desktop support so there's zero chance they're OK with remote for the role.

Sure, that may be true but why bother when you can get one that pays 25% more in the same area?

Then get that one, by all means. I mean, I never really topped out above 49k for a helpdesk/desktop job in NJ, and that was in 2009-2010. It took taking a similar job in NYC to get to around $58kish - first at a major apparel company, then a few years later at an MSP.

I'm not trying to say that this is the ~best job ever~ but it is what it is. I'm just casting a net in hopes of finding a goon on the market that would be a good fit. There are ups and downs with the job. That is, if they even intend to fill it anymore. CFO's experimenting with having me do helpdesk and sysadmin, and if that continues, I will be posting an open recently-vacated role for a helpdesk and sysadmin job at the same company.

I see myself as someone who wants to fix problems properly the first time and document solutions like crazy so if things go wrong again, it can be fixed if I'm not available. I am big on sharing knowledge with colleagues, have excellent Google-fu, and am capable of managing shifting priorities like the best of plate-spinners. Certifications: MCSA for Server 2003, 2008 (MCITP: Systems Administrator), and 2012. VMware Certified Professional for vSphere 5.1. CompTIA Security+.

What I’m looking for: I'd love a vertical move to a senior sysadmin or engineering role, but would also explore project management or team leadership. I'm open to lateral moves as a systems administrator.

What I’m NOT looking for: Helpdesk/desktop support/application support/client-facing positions (unless those clients are technical staff). My current position fired the helpdesk guy and has me doing the helpdesk and sysadmin work. It's demoralizing and I'd much rather have technical challenges rather than customer service challenges.

Where I live: Northern NJ.

Where I’m looking: Northern/central NJ, Manhattan near PABT/Penn or any A/C/E/1/2/3 stop, Jersey City near a PATH stop, or downtown near WTC PATH.

When I can start: Within two weeks of accepting an offer and delivering notice.

Requirements: Full time, decent health plan (I will ask to see actual costs before I accept an offer, preferably early in the process), salary commensurate with experience and responsibilities. If in NYC, I will expect the salary to reflect the higher costs of work and will also want to get transit/parking reimbursement.

Money is good, new office is pretty nice, we're in an excellent area, and the dev team is the best team at the company. Everyone is very friendly and smart. I've learned tons in just over a year. Very little bureaucratic bullshit too.

Sounds awesome, I want to apply!

I'm helping out the recruiter who placed me at my previous job scout candidates for a role. I don't know too much other than what I have here, but I'm more than happy to share his contact info for interested candidates.

Who it is/Where it is:A bank headquarters in Newark, NJ. I don't know the name, but they are a small bank with 5-6 branches in the Tri-state, and growing. Your work would be in Newark.

What it is: Windows system administration, a junior sysadmin taking over tasks and projects from the current VP of IT, to whom you'd report. The VP wants someone to eventually grow into his role eventually.

What they're looking for: Windows sysadmin skills, familiarity/working knowledge of Powershell, familiarity with VMware vSphere virtualization. A good understanding of working with the business to help IT be a partner in growth and operations is a plus, as is good communication skills.

Salary/benefits: $80k plus or minus for base salary, standard PTO package (NJ doesn't have paid sick leave like NYC does, so you'd probably have 15 vacation days, likely bank and federal holidays off as well), discretionary bonus. Usual metro area benefits (health/dental, I think they do pretax transit/parking as well.

How to apply: PM me or post your email. I'll periodically check this thread while the position is open.

Anyone looking for a role as a C++ developer with experience in the SDLC process? If you have QA/testing experience, that's a huge plus too. Job's located in Paramus, NJ, 3ish years of experience preferred. Bachelor degree a plus but not required. Paying around $85k.

I'm helping a recruiter who's helped me a lot and is very good to his candidates. Let me know if you're interested.

Edit:

My job just canned our helpdesk/desktop support guy, so if you want to work with a goon at a major radio station in Manhattan, and you're familiar with MS Office 2010 or newer, Windows 7 desktops, some SCCM client stuff (not required, but good to have), standard AD password reset stuff, and basic everyday PC desktop troubleshooting with some Mac experience, hit me up. We aren't officially hiring yet and I don't know when we will be, but I want to have a few resumes ready to hand off to my boss.

Hourly with OT over 40 hours, decent paid holiday schedules, very laid-back environment (no dress code), decent perks (sports and concert tickets), and probably the single most supportive and chill manager you'll ever have (my boss, not me) it's a great place to be. I'll also help you get certed up, include you on sysadmin stuff, and other things.

We're located in the West Village, steps away from the 1 train West Houston stop and a five-minute walk from Christopher Street PATH.

Not hiring yet, but will be within the next 2-4 weeks

Who we are: A media company, headquartered in another state. The company has radio, TV, and publishing clusters in I think 9 cities in the US. Another division of the company has also recently developed an Android app that allows you to listen to live radio from stations around the country.

Where we are: This office is in NYC in the West Village, with easy and fast walks from Christopher St. PATH stop, Houston St. 1 train stop, or West 4th B/D/F/M/A/C/E stop. There's also a few parking garages nearby if you want to chance Holland Tunnel traffic.

What we're looking for: 1st tier helpdesk/desktop support. You'd be working with me (senior sysadmin) as your supervisor and my boss (director of integrated technology) as your manager. My boss is your boss, so you don't have some weird two-manager situation or whatnot. 1-3 years experience in some form of full-time end-user IT support minimum. As much as I'd like to be a mentor, we need someone who can come in understanding how to do the job.

It's an AD environment, 95% Windows 7 PCs, eventually moving to Win 10 with a rollout of new equipment. Remaining 5% are Macs on OSX 10.10.5 and I think 10.12.something. MS Office, basic PC hardware/software troubleshooting, networked printers and a few direct attached ones, other basic things. Building systems using SCCM and a spec document (it's step-by-step, just follow the doc and you'll be fine), ensuring built machines are adhering to all internal audit requirements, AD account management, and other basics. The job description is still being developed and we haven't posted it yet anywhere, so when it's finalized I'll post here again.

What we're not looking for: The previous candidate had problems showing up late or not at all, and only calling or emailing the boss about it halfway through the day. We would occasionally have to have a talk with him about his body odor. He would also over-promise and under-deliver, leave tickets idle, and while he would fix things and respond to them, he didn't do so reliably. We need someone who is the opposite of those, someone who knows how to deal with different personality types. There aren't serious lawyer/trading-floor Type A people, but we need someone who's got the balance right between soft skills and technical skills.

We're basically three radio stations, so the culture is very laid back. It's really a very big family, so if you're a shirt-and-tie kind of person, it may not work out, but once you get used to things here it's very easy to relax and actually enjoy your job. Plus you'll work for a goon who tolerates and encourages spending your downtime as you like it, so long as the work and projects/tasks are done.

Benefits: health/dental/vision, 401k (no match, alas), TransitCheck commuter pretax program, 10 paid vacation days, one personal day, unlimited sick days, your birthday is a free vacation day, monthly office-wide catered lunch meetings with huge amounts of really good food, promo swag, hip-hop luminaries in and out of the office, no dress code (you can wear a T-shirt and jeans whenever the hell you want, I'm wearing a loud Hawaiian shirt while writing this). Salary is in the mid 40k range. Not sure yet if it's hourly with OT and minimum 40 hours every week or salaried, those details have yet to be worked out.

PM me your email or post it here and I'll reach out.

Mid $40k in NYC?

You can make more than that as an Apple Tech doing hardware repair.

Salary figures are kinda up in the air. I'm deliberately undershooting it right now rather than overshoot and screw someone over based on what I know about how much the last guy pulled down. I'll push hard for the perfect candidate to get them the most that they can but this is a fairly junior position.

For what it's worth, the position will be a great place to learn a lot, get your certs, and move onwards. I will teach anyone anything, and help someone who wants to practice for their certs as best I can to help them advance their career.

I think you can make more than that as a line cook.

That's a bit of a red herring/strawman/etc., but if you can hook me up with some legit job postings for a line cook in the mid $40k range, please do link them to me - it'll give me all the more ammo to push the baseline higher. "Boss, do you really expect us to get someone with experience when as a line cook they get a heck of a lot more free food?"

I would be very surprised if a helpdesk position qualified for overtime exemption, also the salary floor for that went up to like 47k last year or so.

NY exempts at the state level as far as I know, and I'm no HR professional but this seems to indicate that someone's automatically exempt if they make around $57k: https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/fs17e_computer.pdf

I was making $58k in Manhattan with around 5ish years experience back in 2008, no certs, but that was a different time and I'm sure things have changed in that market.

NY law tends to be very similar to CA law. Junior help desk is never exempt in CA, and the floor is something like $85k now regardless. There is no creative element that would satisfy the requirement of being exempt. That is in addition to the minimum salary not one or the other. (All CA specific, but I would tread lightly at calling someone exempt. You can be salaried and still get OT.)

I'm pushing for the position to be non-exempt. My personal opinion is that if you work more than 40 hours a week you should be paid time and a half for it, but the final call rests with my boss, who is the keeper of the departmental budget. The previous holder of the position didn't get too much OT but he was 100% non-exempt and had to do timesheets. This is all of course subject to the HR department's sign-off/clarification.

There's not super amounts of overlap but it's good to be able to point to a comparable position as a point of interest to get them to come up in salary. I'll hang on to these.

Watch MJP quit their job for one of these even though they're overqualified.

Actually I'm making more than enough and am extremely happy with this job. Dead serious, even if I don't get any raises going forward, I'd be more than happy to stay in this position with this company until I retire as long as nothing major changes. We're positioned pretty well in the industry, and even though the market is declining we're not doing as terrible.

Anyway I'll stop making GBS threads up the job fair thread with commentary. Still open to receiving resumes, if anyone is interested. I'll update when we have firmer numbers and a link to apply directly, if desired.

So my original post on this from months ago got completely blown away thanks to a companywide hiring freeze. Only recently did we get the go-ahead to explore getting someone in on a part-time or contract basis, or outsourcing. I've made minor tweaks and am now actively looking for people. Edit: as of now it's a 1099 basis only. We have to be able to pay a company, not a person, due to budget garbage.

Who we are: A media company, headquartered in Indianapolis.

You'd be working with me (senior sysadmin) as your supervisor. 1-2 years' experience in some form of full-time end-user IT support minimum. As long as your environment has AD and Exchange, either on-prem or Office 365, it'll probably cover the requirement. The position is 30 hours a week, preferably 5 days but we can flex the schedule. It's first shift, start time can be anywhere between 8 AM and 9:30 AM. The role is strictly a contract with no extension promised. Last day is 2/28/18 unless things change. I don't want to oversell something I can't deliver on.

It's an AD environment, 95% Windows 7 PCs, eventually moving to Win 10 with a rollout of new equipment. Remaining 5% are Macs on OSX 10.10.5 with an upgrade to El Capitan coming for around 10 or so Macs. If you want to do more I'm happy to teach and mentor, let you shoulder-surf me, or do tasks yourself under supervision. If my boss is OK with me delegating more challenging tasks, I am happy to help. I know we can't attract on longevity so I want to make the position an enjoyable and helpful one if you want it to be that way.

We need someone who is laid-back and gets on well with people and isn't a robot. There's no need to be a stuffed shirt here.

Benefits: We can't budget for health/dental/etc., but we can offer TransitCheck so at least your commute expenses are pretax. There are also monthly office-wide catered lunch meetings with huge amounts of really good food, promo swag, hip-hop luminaries in and out of the office, no dress code (you can wear a T-shirt and jeans whenever the hell you want, I'm wearing a City Name Sports Team jersey while writing this). $25-$30 per hour DOE, but we can flex upward if you have the skills and experience.

We'll check references before hire so have two professional references available for down the road.

If we go forward, I'll schedule a quick tech screen phone call, and after that, we'll do a brief in-person interview. If you're not local, that's fine, but we can't provide relocation expenses and the in-person interview can't be done over Skype.

PM me your email or post it here and I'll reach out.

Job Seeker

My experience: 14 years in IT focusing in Windows support/sysadmin/engineering, with a chunk of VMware and Hyper-V. 8 years in desktop support/some sysadmin, 6 years as a full-time sysadmin. Presently a senior sysadmin. Some modest SQL. Experience supporting HP and Dell SAN technology, iSCSI, and some Fibre Channel.

What I'm looking for: I want to be either balancing my engineering responsibility with any sysadmin responsibility, or doing only engineering. My primary skill set is in Windows infrastructure (MCSA for Server 2003 through 2016, MCSE Cloud Platform) but I have my VCP for vSphere 5.5. I have some lab experience in Azure and I'm willing to learn AWS. My previous position involved a hybrid cloud that ran our VDI via VMware vSphere infrastructure and Xendesktop 7.6, but I am by no means an expert in Xendesktop.

What I'm NOT looking for: Anything involving helpdesk or only focusing in sysadmin tasks. If I have to start doing helpdesk, I'm going to have to start looking for another job. I don't mind if I have to wear business casual but I just don't feel comfortable in a culture that requires a jacket and tie every day. I'd also rather not work exclusively with non-technical end users unless it's to gather requirements or something like that. I'm definitely not the smelly goon stereotype, I just like working to fix things more directly than walking Jane from Accounting on how to plug in a new mouse.

Where I live: Near the interchange of I-78 and the GSP.

Where I'm looking: NYC metro. Midtown I can do anything near Penn Station or an A/C/E/1/2/3 train, or anywhere else in Manhattan near a PATH stop. In NJ I'm OK with as far north as the Rutherford area, as far west as Warren/Watchung area, and as far south as Woodbridge/Edison/Iselin/etc.

When I can start: Within two weeks of an accepted offer

Requirements: Competitive salary and non-awful working environment. Health/dental/vision not necessary but I would very much prefer at least having a 401k, even if there's no match. I distrust bonuses and would greatly prefer that any compensation be part of my base salary, unless the bonus is its own separate written guarantee.

Can be reached via: forums PM, or let me know your email. Since mine contains my name, I'd rather not post it publicly.
